Green Eyes

28

Pulling the covers down, I swung my legs over the side of the bed, and placing me feet on the ground I stood up. Wrapping a blanket around my shivering body, I began to tip-toe towards the door, careful not to make any noise that someone might hear. In a house full of vampires, that wasn’t very easy.

I bit my lip nervously as I pushed the door open, cursing when it creaked. Looking around to make sure no one was there, I tip-toed down the hallway, stopping outside the large black door labelled ‘Vengeance’.

Holding my breath, I turned the doorknob, slowly pushing the door open. Luckily for me, it didn’t make a sound, and I continued inside.

Closing the door behind me, I turned around, my breath caught in my throat at what I saw.

Zacky’s body laid motionless across the bed, the blankets carelessly tossed over his battered body, his normally pale skin now an eerie blue. Bruises covered his face and arms, and though the blood had been washed off, the scars remained as evidence of his violent battle.

His eyes were closed as his head faced to me, and I wanted nothing more than to shake him, to tell him to wake up so I could be looking into his brilliant green orbs. But I knew if I did, that wouldn’t happen. I had to face the fact that this time, it was Zacky who needed to be looked after.

The door slammed open, and Jimmy ran inside, his arms holding the broken body of his best friend. Matt followed closely, a delirious Kayla lying in his arms, her eyes completely focused on her lover’s face.

Brian ran into the room, his eyes widening when he saw what was in front of him. ‘What the hell happened?’ he asked, and the others all ran into the room behind him, shocked looks on their faces.

‘They ran into a vampire. He must have been undetectable – none of us could sense him and obviously Zacky couldn’t. We came just in time’ Jimmy explained hurriedly, before he began walking up the stairs, holding Zacky’s body in his arms.

Johnny ran over to Kayla, his eyes full of concern as he looked at the girl he cared so much about. ‘Kayla?’ he whispered, reaching out to touch her face with his cold hands. His hand touched her skin and she didn’t even flinch, her eyes instead focused on the stairs where Jimmy had just been.

‘Zacky?’ she murmured, and Johnny ran his fingers down her face.

Brian walked over, glancing at Matt then Johnny. ‘Take her to bed. Don’t let her see Zacky just yet – wait until she wakes up tomorrow.’

Matt nodded and walked away, rubbing Kayla’s body soothingly. ‘I have to see Zacky’ she murmured, her eyes not even reaching Matts.

Matt ran his thumb in circles on her cheek as he pushed open her door with his foot, walking over to her bed. ‘Zacky’s ok. He just needs a bit of rest. You need to get to sleep. You can see him in the morning.’

Kayla didn’t even acknowledge him as he placed her on the bed, pulling the covers up around her. Kissing her softly on the forehead, Matt bid her goodnight before turning to walk out of the room.

‘I want Zacky’ she murmured, and Matt turned back to her, a sad frown on his face. Deciding to leave her go, Matt walked out of the room to join the others and discuss what would be happening with Zacky.

Stepping over to his bed, I placed my shaking hand on his skin, shivering at his cold touch. I ran my fingers down his face, caressing his cheeks and tracing his lips, tears rolling down my face when he remained still.

‘Zacky?’ I whispered, wiping his hair out of his face. ‘You there? It’s time to wake up.’

He didn’t move. Sighing, I walked around to the other side of the bed, and I crawled in. Curling my body around Zacky’s, I relished his cool skin, feeling safe and secure in his embrace although he did not know.

I wrapped my arms around his bruised waist, pushing my body against his. I wanted nothing more than for him to turn around and take me in his arms, to kiss me and tell me he was ok. I wanted to help him, but I didn’t know how.

I nuzzled my face in his back, careful not to touch any bruises or scars in case it hurt him. My tears fell onto his bare skin and I held him closer, forcing myself to ignore the fact that he didn’t know I was there.

‘Zacky’ I murmured, pulling away slightly. ‘Are you asleep?’

Nothing. Sobs escaped my mouth as I slowly pulled away, stepping out of the bed. I pulled the covers up around him, making sure he was warm before walking over to the window.

The rain was trickling down the window, and I almost laughed at how cliché it was. But I couldn’t laugh, not when behind me was the man I loved, unable to see or hear me.

I took a seat on the windowsill, running my fingers down the glass. I traced patterns into the glass with my finger, looking out into the garden that was now shining from the water that covered it.

In the reflection I could see Zacky’s body, curled so his back was facing me, oblivious to the fact that I was standing behind him. Turning away from the window, I walked back over to him, once more gazing upon his motionless body, my tears dropping softly upon the blankets wrapped around him.

Leaning down so that we were eye-level, I took in all of his features, my eyes stopping when I noticed his lip was trembling.

‘Zacky?’ I whispered, touching his arm with my hand.

He didn’t move. Moving my hand over his lips, I pulled them back softly, only to see that his fangs were lengthening over his bottom lip, growing larger so that they were almost cutting his lip.

‘Are you thirsty?’ I asked, touching his fang with the tip of my finger. I gasped when his fang pricked my finger, sending a drop of blood into his mouth.

Cautiously, I placed my wrist in front of his mouth, preparing myself for the pain that would come. I knew it would hurt but hey, if it helped Zacky it would be worth it, right?

I bit my lip to hold in a scream of pain when his fangs sunk deep into my skin, drawing the blood out. His body seemed to react to the blood and his grip on my wrist got tighter, sending more pain through my body. I felt the need to scream as I sat there, clenching my teeth to stop any noises from coming out.

Zacky let out a muffled moan but his eyes stayed shut, his fangs acting as if on an instinct. His fangs pressed deeper into my scream and I hid my face in my shoulder to stop myself from screaming in pain.

I felt myself beginning to get dizzy and my body growing weak as the blood continually flowed from my body, and I tapped him on the head to stop him.

‘Zacky, that’s enough’ I said, pushing his arm softly.

The pain got worse as his fangs clenched around my wrist, and I began to panic.

‘Zacky stop!’ I whisper screamed, tapping him desperately on the face. ‘It hurts!’

I felt my legs collapse from under me and I let out a scream, falling to the ground. The motion pulled my wrist away from his mouth but his fangs held it back, and I screamed again as I felt my skin rip. He continued to suck the blood from me and my body began to shake, and I tried to get myself up off the ground.

‘Zacky!’ I called, sobbing as I fell to the ground once more. ‘Zacky stop! Stop! It hurts!’

Footsteps came closer and the door slammed open, revealing a very concerned looking Brian. He gasped when he saw me and ran over, calling for the others.

Matt, Jimmy, Johnny, Kaylee and Maddy ran into the room, their eyes widening when they saw my shaking body on the floor, my wrist still connected to Zacky’s mouth. Kaylee let out a scream and ran over to me, grabbing my head and holding it straight. ‘Brian make it stop!’ she called, and he let out an anxious grunt.

Tears were pouring down my face and I let out another scream of pain, my head going dizzy from the blood loss. Brian and Matt grabbed hold of Zacky, shaking his body repeatedly. ‘Zacky!’ they yelled, jerking his body violently.

I felt the grip on my wrist release and I fell to the floor, the cut still throbbing and dripping with blood. Maddy took her jumper off and wrapped it around my wrist, trying to stop the blood flow.

My body went weak and my head fell into Kaylee’s lap, my vision going blurry as I looked around. ‘I wanted to help’ I whispered, hating the fact that they must have thought I was stupid. ‘His fangs were over his lip and I wanted to help.’

The blood from my wrist had now soaked the jumper and I felt my body go limp, my mind barely conscious as I looked at the anxious faces of those around me.

I felt stupid. I didn’t want to look at their faces in case they were laughing, laughing at what I had done and the fact that I thought it would help. With one last look at the bed, I saw a pair of green eyes pop open before my world went dark.
