Green Eyes

‘Tomorrow?’ I breathed in disbelief, as fear started clouding my body. Sammi nodded slowly, and I swallowed forcefully, my usually active mind completely blank from all thoughts but those of Kayla. ‘How far away are they?’ I asked, my voice coming out as a croak.

Sammi smiled grimly at me, before letting out a sigh, turning her violet eyes to mine so that I could see the absolute terror that radiated through them. ‘They’re setting up the army. Vercro, well, he’s determined to win. And, I hate to say it, but-‘

‘We’re all going to die’ I cut off, my voice completely void of emotion. Sammi frowned sombrely and nodded slowly, picking up her dainty finger to twirl it around a loose strand of hair.

Panic set place in my body, my veins pulsing with a new kind of fear I had never felt before. A fear for her, the girl I loved. I hated the fact that I didn’t know whether I’d be able to protect her, whether or not by the end of this, she’d still be safe. What if I was dead? What if there was no one around to save her?

Ignoring Sammi’s questioning gaze I took off in a sprint towards the house, a new found anger plaguing my body, making my mind go into overdrive. I slammed the door open and immediately her scent filled my nose, sending shivers of longing vibrating through my body. I could feel the others eyes on me, their gazes questioning as they stared, before Jimmy broke the silence. ‘What’s up, V?’ he asked, taking a step towards me.

I let out a loud puff of air, before opening my mouth to speak, my voice coming out as a quiet croak. ‘They’re coming. Hundreds of them. They’ve recruited rogue vampires from all over the world, and they’re after Kayla. They’ll be here. Tomorrow.’

Silence filled the air, the shock and fear on their faces evident from the corner of my eyes. ‘What do we do?’ Brian asked quietly, running his fingers through his tousled hair. ‘Do we run?’

‘They’ll find us.’ Johnny cut off, shaking his head. ‘If they’ve gone to this much trouble, they’ll have gotten the best. Even if we ran to the other side of the world, it would only be a matter of time before they found us. We can’t go anywhere.’

Brian cursed loudly, letting out a soft groan. ‘What do we do then?’ he asked, uncertainty lacing his tone. ‘I mean, they’ll kill us. And we can’t run-’

‘Then we’ll fight’ Matt said confidently, taking a step forward, a powerful glint shining in his hazel eyes. ‘We might not be able to do much, but I’ll be damned if I just sit there and watch them take away everything I love.’

I nodded my head in agreeance, my eyes taking on a stronger stance as I looked up and met their eyes. ‘Then we fight.’

Kayla’s POV

I pulled the blankets up so that they rested under my chin, shuffling around until I was comfortable. I let out a quiet yawn and snuggled into the blankets, my eyes drifting over to the window, my room illuminated by the glow of the moon as it shone through. I could hear birds chirping outside and I sighed contently, staring out into the darkness.

I had no idea where anyone was, and it was beginning to worry me. Maddy had left my room a few hours ago, and I hadn’t seen anyone since. I let out a groan and allowed my eyes to flutter to a close, collecting the blankets around me to sustain my warmth.

The door creaked as it opened slightly and my eyes snapped open, directing to the door, where I could see a dark shadow standing. ‘Maddy?’ I asked quietly, straining my eyes to see in the darkness. My heart was beginning to thump erratically in my chest, the sound of it overwhelming my thoughts. The person began to step closer to my bed, and as they passed the window, the moonlight lit up their face, and I let out a soft gasp. ‘Z-Zacky?’

I couldn’t help the way my heart warmed at the sight of his familiar green eyes, my body yearning for his touch so strongly that I had to force myself to remain in the bed. Fear began to shoot through my body as I saw the anxious look on his face, and the scar on my wrist began to prick. I backed away slightly, searching his eyes for clues of bloodlust, pushing myself against back the headboard.

‘Kayla’ he said quietly, his voice sending shivers down my spine. ‘Don’t be scared’ he whispered as I shrank away, a pained expression passing through his eyes.

He reached out his hand to me and I found myself leaning towards it, and as his fingertips met the skin on my cheek I relished the familiar spark that ran through my body. Zacky leaned down so that his head was in front of mine, our eyes trained on each others, his looking at me longingly while I looked at his with uncertainty. He caressed my cheek with his hand, running his calloused fingers over my skin, tracing the planes of my face as if he was committing it back to memory.

I found myself craving for more of him, and I cautiously leaned forward, so that his warm breath was tickling my face. He cupped my cheek and pulled me towards him, brushing his lips against mine softly before crashing them together lovingly, pulling me towards him with fever. My heart began to explode in my chest as sparks rolled through my body, and I reached my hand out and wrapped it around his head, pulling him as close as I could in desperation. He pulled away and rubbed his nose against mine, a small smile forming on his face. ‘I missed you so much, Kayla’ he breathed, brushing his thumb over my flushed cheeks. I smiled and leaned forward, kissing him softly before pulling away, my eyes regaining the sparkle that had disappeared all those days ago.

‘I missed you too’ I told him softly, our eyes never breaking contact. He smiled before he stood up, walking around to the other side of the bed and pulling the covers down, before crawling in beside me. I rolled over to face him, my brown hair scattered across the pillow, my chest rising and falling with each breath I took. He turned on his side so that our bodies were laid in a heart shape, and he smiled at me softly. He reached out his hand and brushed away an errant piece of hair, tucking it behind my ear.

We laid like that for a few minutes, never leaving each others gaze, comfortable in the silence that surrounded the moonlit room. He reached down and pulled my hand towards him, lacing them together before pulling them up to his lips and placing a soft kiss on my knuckles. I smiled softly, my heart and mind overjoyed as I stared into the green orbs that always made me feel safe. A pained expression passed through Zacky’s eyes and I frowned, squeezing his hand tightly in mine. ‘What’s wrong, Zacky?’ I asked quietly, searching his eyes for the answer. Zacky shook his head slightly and pulled me closer, placing his hands on my hips protectively.

‘We’ll talk in the morning’ he said softly, rubbing his thumbs in circles on my hips. I opened my mouth to speak again but broke off when I saw the expression on his face, and I settled for placing my hands behind his neck and pulling him in for a kiss. I nuzzled my nose against his, and smiled as his lips met my forehead, lingering there before he pulled away and I buried my face into his chest. He wrapped his arms tighter around me and placed a kiss on the top of my head, before resting his chin against it.

Laying in his arms, I realised I had almost forgotten how complete it made me feel. The way his arms made me feel safe, his lips made me feel loved and his caresses made me feel adored. My heart was filled with warmth, my stomach squeezing at the feeling of butterflies flooding through it. My body felt complete, any feeling of fear completely diminishing.

He placed another kiss on my head, before bringing his lips to my ear. ‘I love you Kayla, always remember that’ he whispered, his breath tickling my ear. I could hear traces of pain hiding in his tone but I forced myself not to question what he meant by it, instead relishing the feeling of being in his arms. In the morning. I’d ask him then.

I smiled softly, closing my eyes. ‘I love you too, Zacky.’
