Green Eyes

05

My blue eyes snapped open in shock, my heart racing slightly as the echo of his voice rang through the room. Had I heard right? I sat up abruptly in my bed and turned my head in the direction the sound had come from, my mind silently praying that I had dreamt the last words. My hopes plummeted and my heart dropped at the sight of a very smug looking Layton, who was standing there with his hands in his pockets, his fangs protruding his bottom lip. I let out a loud gasp and scrambled further towards the wall.

‘Now that’s a bit rude isn’t it? Surely you didn’t think we were going to let you get away from us?’ Layton purred, finishing with a chuckle that gave me goosebumps.

My frozen body began shaking, my mind silently praying for something to come help me. ‘Wh-what do you w-wa-want with me?’ I stuttered, clenching my hands in fists at my side.

Layton smiled widely, showing his fangs. ‘Wh-what do I w-wa-want with you?‘ he mocked, his red eyes fierce with amusement as they stared down at my terrified figure. ‘I think that’s for Master Vercro to explain to you. Now I suggest you start following me, unless you want something bad to happen.’

Something clicked in my brain and my heart began to beat erratically in my chest. My parents were out; what if he had them? I mean, a note couldn’t be too hard to forge. I felt a rush of anger pulse through my body as I thought of this, my eyes dancing with fury as I glared into Layton’s amused eyes. I gritted my teeth harshly, my eyes narrowing towards my enemy as a new found confidence soared through me. ‘What have you done with my parents you bastard?’ I spat through clenched teeth.

Layton’s eyes turned black and he let out an animalistic growl, and as quick as lightening he was beside me, his pale hand slapping me across my face. I let out a scream as his hand made contact with my skin, pain soaring through my body as I subconsciously brought my hand to my cheek where he had hit me. I knew in an instant it would bruise, but that didn’t matter to me. All I needed to know was that my parents were ok. My teeth clenched tighter in my mouth, my mind silently cursing vampires and their superhuman strength.

Reluctantly, I raised my eyes to meet Layton’s, which were watching me wince in amusement. Surprisingly, his eyes had returned to their original colour, and he was smiling at me mockingly. Bipolar much?

‘Now princess,’ he started, taking another step towards me, his eyes twinkling with laughter when I tried to back away. ‘ I’m sorry I had to hit you but I won’t be spoken to like that. And you better learn some manners before you go talking to Vercro as I can guarantee he’ll be a lot worse.’

I gulped. ‘What about my parents?’

Layton chuckled, his manic laughter ringing out across the dull room. ‘That, my dear, was an incredible coincidence. You can just thank your parents for going out tonight as it will be another day you get to spend with me. That is, if you ever see them again’ he finished, a mocking smile growing on his face as he tilted his head, letting the full meaning of his words sink into my mind.

Hang on, never see my parents again? My body shook with both anger and fear as I mentally denied the fact. I couldn’t handle that. I needed them. They were all I had.

What did he mean? Was he going to kill them? Wait... was he going to kill me?

Tears started to run down my face, staining my face as I forced myself not to glare at him, knowing it would only make matters worse in the end. His eyes stared straight at me, taking my tears in as if they were feeding his fun.

‘C’mon, let’s get going. And you better do this calmly and quietly, or I can guarantee something will happen to your parents’ Layton said, grinning so widely that his fangs glowed in the moonlight that streamed through my open window.

I forced myself to ignore the jelly feeling in my legs as I stood up, clutching onto the edge of my bed for support. I grabbed my jacket and walked as close as I dared towards Layton, my feet trembling with every step I took. He smiled at me and led me out of the house, where his car was waiting.

My mind was suddenly struck with a thought. What was with vampires and cars? I mean, couldn’t they like, run as fast as light or something? My mind silently cursed my human legs and their abilities. Damn I wished I could run that fast. Then I may have had a chance to escape.

Layton opened the door for me and I reluctantly hopped in, mentally reminding myself that running would make things worse. The doors locked behind me with a soft click and I let out a quiet gasp as Layton appeared beside me. Layton chuckled, making me mentally groan. Man I was sick of that. ‘That’s all part of being a vampire, hon’ he said, before his red eyes focused on the road ahead of us.

I cringed at his use of words. Bloody vampires. I was happier when they had all just been a fantasy.

We drove in silence, Miley Cyrus blaring from the radio. Layton really was trying to torture me.

My mind kept drifting back to my parents. Were they safe? Would they worry about me if I didn’t turn up tomorrow? But worst of all, would I ever see them again?

I didn’t realise I was crying until I noticed Layton was laughing at me. How hard was it to just concentrate on driving? No, he had to find humour in my pain. God I hated him.

Suddenly, there was a bang on the front of the car as the window smashed, causing me to scream in fright. Layton cursed loudly and told me to stay in the car, before ripping his door open and disappearing into the night. My body began to shake before I slowly comprehended the fact that nothing out there could be worse or more dangerous than a vampire with seemingly intent to kill me or hurt me.

I heard a squeal as something crashed into the side of the car, causing it to dent as the metal made a cracking sound. I screamed and backed as far as I could into the corner of the car, my arms wrapped tightly around my self for protection and comfort. I looked towards where the crash had come from, only to see blood spattered all over the window. My heart began to beat rapidly in my chest as my stomach squirmed at the smell of the blood, which was now dripping down the side of the damaged car. I searched the darkness for Layton, but my human eyes could find nothing but the glitter of stars in the sky. Something growled as I heard a roar of pain.

I screamed as I heard a knock on the window behind me. I turned around and immediately saw the familiar green eyes staring back at me, full of concern, anger and worry.

Kayla, don’t panic. You need to come with me.

I nodded my head, immediately knowing I could trust him. I couldn’t help the excited feeling that came rushing through me. He had saved me again! And I was going with him, I could be with him, and maybe I could ask him why this was all happening.

I undid my seatbelt and opened the door, my brown hair swinging across my face with the wind that was streaking through the open door. I tried to be as quiet as I could as I stepped out of the car, slowly shutting the door behind me. I heard a scream and I immediately snapped my head around, my hair sashaying in the breeze as it whispered across my face. In the darkness I could barely make out 3 figures in a fight, 2 of them pinning down the other as they clawed at his face. I shuddered as I felt a cold hand softly grab me, a small tingle rippling through me as I slowly turned my head around to face him.

We need to go quickly. Don’t make a sound.

I nodded once again and allowed him to lead me away, only stopping when we reached a large black sports car. He opened the door for me and I hopped in, not even considering the consequences of going with this creature. Something told me I could trust him, and as I’ve mentioned before, I trust my feelings.

We started driving, and I found myself often staring at the creature beside me, who was gazing intently at the road. As we passed a street light, the car lit up and I was able to see his face. My eyes widened at the sight in front of me, my small heart fluttering in my chest. He was beautiful, beyond what a regular human could be. His black hair swept across his face, hanging slightly below his striking green eyes that were staring ahead of him. His lips were plump and full and I could see tattoos covering his shoulders, small piercings laying underneath his bottom lip. He was more beautiful than I had imagined. As I gazed closer at him, I noticed he had pale skin, similar to Layton’s. I gasped. ‘You’re one of them?!’

His green eyes left the road to look at me, his bright orbs swallowed by sadness and promise. ‘Kayla I promise you can trust me. I would neverhurt you. Neither will my friends. All I want to do is protect you. Do you think I would have saved you if I didn’t want that?’

I bowed my head so that I was looking at my bare feet, suddenly overcome with shame. Of course he didn’t want to hurt me. ‘I already trust you.’ I whispered. ‘Thankyou for saving me.’

His eyes lit up as he smiled at me, making my stomach flutter. No goosebumps appeared on my skin when his fangs showed, because deep down I knew I was safe.I found myself smiling back, not wanting to avert my eyes from his gaze. ‘What’s your name?’ I asked softly, licking my dry lips.

He chuckled, his laughter sounding like music compared to Layton’s. ‘Sorry we’ve been a bit busy for introductions, though I already know who you are. My names Zacky, but my friends call me Vengeance.’

I smiled. Zacky. ‘I would have pictured vampires as having more strange names. Yours is so normal.’

He laughed, his eyes turning back to the road. ‘That’s what the nicknames are for. They make us sound a lot more fierce.’

We sat in silence for a bit longer, before I realised I had no idea where we were going. ‘Zacky, where are you taking me?’

He glanced quickly at me. ‘I thought it would be best to take you back to mine and the guys’ house. Two of them are already there, and as you could see, the other two are out fighting your captor. Don’t worry about your parents, they know you’re safe with me.’

I was surprised by this comment. ‘They know you?’

He sighed and turned to look at me. ‘Yes, they know me. But we don’t have time to talk about it now. I promise it all will be explained to you when you wake up tomorrow. You won’t have to go to school, your parents have taken care of that.’

I frowned, a small pout forming on my face as I looked out the window. I was and had always been impatient, and there was no way I wanted to wait until tomorrow to find out. Zacky turned to look at me and laughed. ‘You have no idea how cute you look doing that.’

A blush rose on my cheek and I bit my lip before looking away. We pulled up outside a large house and Zacky stopped the car, motioning for me to get out. I was suddenly overwhelmed by fatigue, and my body seemed too heavy for my legs. I yawned loudly, causing Zacky to look at me and smile. ‘I think its time to show you your bedroom.’

I lazily followed him through the house, too tired to take in my surroundings. He stopped outside a door and opened it for me, the door making a quiet creak as it swung open. I didn’t bother to look around the room, instead running and plopping myself down under the bed. Zacky walked over and pulled the covers up for me, tucking me in. I yawned and rolled over, pulling the covers up around me. Zacky leant down and kissed my forehead, my skin tingling with the touch. ‘Goodnight Kayla’ he whispered, his breath tickling my face.

I mumbled goodnight back, and snuggled myself deeper into the sheets. I sighed contentedly. Tonight, I knew I wouldn’t have a nightmare. I felt to perfect, and absolutely safe with him by my side.
