The radio was on. The haunting voice echoed in the cellar. A woman’s voice singing in a language I could never understand. But the beauty, that was rooted deep down in this strange womans throat, filled the cold room with warmth. Licia put her hand on my hip and her hand in mine. To the lonely melody from a thousand miles away we danced.
- They call her Billie Holiday, she whispered with a smile on her lips.
- Billie Holiday, I responded, with my chin on her shoulder.
- It is really a man’s name, you know. Billie, she continued, with her eyes closed, moving me back and forth, firm and gentle, to the music.
