Tell Me Now If You Can Swim.

I was sleeping peacefully till my phone started vibrating in my pocket.
I groaned and opened my eyes. Max wasn't with me anymore. I heard him talking in another room and took my phone out.

Jessi, you seriously need to talk to Bryan. Like soon.

It was from Brooke. What did we miss at school?

Why? What happened?

I'm not gonna talk about it. It's between you and him...

Why did that have me worried?

Uh okay. Tell him I'll come over after school.

Okay.

I stood up and walked over to where Max was standing in the kitchen talking on the phone.
"Alright mom. Okay I'll talk to you later. I love you."
Aww! He loves his mommy! Haha.
He hung up the phone and looked at me.
"That was my mom. She said she has to fly to Florida for a business trip." He shrugged and sat down at the kitchen table next to me.
I nodded and said, "I have to go to Bryan's house later. I need to talk to him. Brooke said something happened at school today but she wouldn't tell me what."
He gave me an unsure look and said, "I don't know if I want you to go over there alone. I think he still likes you..."
I took his hand in mine and said, "I'll be fine. Trust me." I gave him a smile and he returned it. I looked at the clock. It was 1:45. We got out at 2.
"I think I'm gonna start heading over there now. It'll take me fifteen minutes to walk there." I shrugged and stood up. Max did the same and followed me up to his room. He sat on the bed as I pulled on my converse. I looked up at him, he was staring down at his hands and playing with the hem of his shirt. Something he did when he was worried and/or nervous.
I pulled my knee's to my chest and said, "What's wrong?"
He looked up at me and shook his head mumbling what sounded like, "Nothing."
I stood up and started walking to the door when Max caught me by wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me towards him. I landed next to him on the bed.
"Promise you wont cheat on me with Bryan...." His voice was just barely above a whisper.
I tilted his chin up so that he would look at me. I lightly pressed my lips to his and kept them there for a few seconds.
"I would never do that." I said once we pulled away. "Don't you trust me?"
He nodded once, but his eyes still showed his worry. I kissed him again and walked out of the room. I grabbed my iPod off the counter and walked towards the from door. Max was standing there and opened it for me. I smiled up at him and gave him a tight hug before I started walking.
Once I got to Bryan's house I started getting nervous.
There was only one car parked outside of his house, and it was his brother Mike's car. Mike cam walking out of the house as I started walking up the driveway.
"Oh hey Jessi!" He said waving and looking up at me.
I waved slightly and said, "Hey. Is Bryan home yet?"
He shook his head and said, "Nah not yet. Why?"
"I just needed to talk to him about something." He nodded and said, "Well I gotta get to work. See ya later!" And with that, he was in his car and driving down the street. One of the things I loved most about Mike is that he doesn't push a subject if you make it obvious you want want to talk about it. I sat on Bryan's porch for about 5 minutes before he walked up with his friend Tony. Tony lived 2 houses down and he sometimes hung out with us, but not a lot of the times. Bryan hadn't noticed me sitting there till he was at the door and turning his key in the lock. That's when I said, "Hey there." earning a slight scream and a jump.
I smiled and he turned to me clutching his chest.
"Jesus Christ! Are you trying to kill me?!" He asked looking at me like i was crazy.....which wasn't a complete lie. But still.
I shrugged and said, "No."
He turned the key the rest of the way and opened the door. "Why are you here anyway?" He asked looking at me and opening the door gesturing for me to come in.
"I just wanted to talk to you......Brooke said something happened at school today after Max and I left...." He made a face to himself when I said Max's name as he walked to the couch and sat down. I followed and sat sideways so I could look at him.
Silence over took us. Bryan wouldn't look at me. He kept his gaze on his hands and the hem of his shirt.
"Bryan....." I said, my voice just barely above a whisper. "What's going on?"
He turned his head the slightest bit and looked at me.
"Does it have anything to do with me and Max?" I asked probably knowing what was going to happen.
He nodded and I scooted closer to him. I saw a single tear fall down his cheek.
"Why would you do that?" He asked, his voice cracking on the last word.
"Do what? Date Max?"
He shook his head and turned to look at me fully.
"How could you say you liked me and lead me on like that, then go pull this shit and start dating him?! He's a douche Jessi! In 2 weeks he'll be with some other girl leaving you heartbroken! Trust me, I know Max." By now he was standing up looking down at me. Hands clenched into fists and crying.
"I'm sorry. I just. I don't fucking know! Max was there and I was confused. He asked me out and all I could think of was yes! I liked you both! A lot! If you would've asked me out, I would've said yes! But you didn't! Max got to me first!" By now I was also standing up, crying.
We stayed quiet for a few minutes just standing there, clenching and unclenching our firsts.
"I'm sorry I can't be perfect okay. I just have so much crap going through my mind. Between my dad and then this....." I trailed off looking down at the carpet. "I don't wanna even be here anymore Bryan. I wish I was gone. Anywhere other than Vegas." I finished looking up at him. He seemed shocked that I said that. He was still crying, but so was I.
"I'll see you at school..." I said turning and walking for the door. Bryan didn't try and stop me, and I didn't expect him to. I plugged in my iPod and started walking home.
I was a little scared about what was going to happen at school, I have about half my classes with Bryan and he sat right next to me. I wonder if my teachers would move me to a different seat if I asked. Oh well. I'll just try to ignore him as best I can..
