Sequel: One Heart

In My Dreams It's Me And You

Close Call

Nathalie's POV

I had never contemplating ending my life before, but now seemed a good a time as any.

Somehow I had managed to blindly end up standing in front of the venue, which was pretty much deserted other than the odd passer-by since the show finished a few hours earlier. No one seemed to care that I was just standing there other than giving me the odd look every now and then, obviously just thinking I had a really late ride or one that had just forgotten to pick me up altogether. The roads however were still heavy with traffic, mostly from the cabs that were shifting to and from nightclubs to homes.

As I stood there I couldn’t help but feel myself fall deeper into the abyss of sorrow and helplessness; unable to shake the feeling that the world just seemed to be against me. The only person I had to lean upon just announced in front of a whole jury consisting of Matt’s band that he no longer cared about me, and in effect, split up with me. Or rather, I split up with him. It was the last thing I should have done since I needed everyone I had, but I guess the pain of his betrayal just forced my words before I could stop them.

I don't know how long it was I stood there in the cold until I took my first step forward, followed shortly by another, and another. Vaguely in the distance I heard someone yell out, but I couldn't tell what it was they were saying. By now every sound, sight and smell had just blurred together to form one big mess I couldn't understand.

The closer I got to the road the louder the sounds behind me got, and just as I took the final step into the path of traffic I felt the world fall out from underneath me, and everything turned black.

Brian's POV

With my cheek red, swollen and stinging like a bitch I began searching for Nathalie, teamed with Zack since he couldn't seem to understand that I wasn't likely to do anything stupid, or in his words, “Get myself arrested or killed.”

“You know Zack,” I began. “It would be much quicker if we split up and looked-”

“No,” He said, cutting me off. “I'm sticking with you, and that's final.”

“What about Chloe? Are you sure she won't just go over Jimmy and try to scratch his eyes out?”

He rolled his eyes at me. “Stop trying to make me leave, because it's not going to-” He stopped suddenly, staring out onto the street just as we rounded the corner to the venue. “Is that Nathalie standing there?”

I squinted in the general direction of where Zack was now pointing, seeing the slim figure standing in the dim light that the neon lighting of the venue sign gave off behind them. At first I didn't think it was but when they raised their hand to brush out their hair I got a glimpse of their face- and the tears along with it.

My relief was short-lived however as I saw that she had begun to step out onto the road, and with no clear signs of stopping. “Shit... Nathalie! Nat stop!” I ran as fast as I could from where I was to Nathalie, only just managing to get my arms around her waist and pull her backwards before the next car came, screaming its horn at the both of us for getting in its way.

“Fuck, are you alright?!” Zack asked worriedly, jogging over just as I was walking onto the pavement, Nathalie bundled in my arms. “Is she alright? Neither of you got hit, did you?”

“No, I think I got to her in time,” I replied, glancing down at Nathalie. Her eyes were closed and even though I could see the steady rise and fall of her chest it didn't make my thoughts any calmer thinking that she had in fact died. She looked like a ghost, even now. “I'll take her back to the bus, you go find everyone,” I ordered, giving him a steady glare as he looked ready to protest. “Go find everyone Zack. We're fine.”

“Brian...”

“Zack,” I said firmly. “Just go.”

He shot me a worried look before leaving, disappearing down the street to where the others had started to look. I took Nathalie back onto our tour bus, shifting her onto one arm as I wiped some of the crumbs off my bed (thanks to Jimmy sleeping in the bed above but deciding to comfort his addiction to eating Lucky Charms on mine) before gently laying her down on it. After tucking her hair behind her ear from where it had fallen across her eyes I turned to leave and help Zack track down the others, only to stop when I felt something tug on the back of my shirt.

Nathalie had reached out and grabbed the end of my shirt, even though her eyes were still closed. Her grip tightened as I tried to ease her fingers open so I just gave up and crept onto the bed beside her, making sure I didn't wake her. Those six weeks just seemed forgotten as I just looked at her for the next few minutes, but I couldn't help but fear what would happen after she woke up.

Would she still even want to be with me?

I ran my fingers gently down her cheek and whispered the only thing I could think of. “I'm sorry... for everything. I love you Nathalie.”

She didn't answer, but I could swear I saw a smile.

Only a small one, but a smile nonetheless.
