Pain is Inevitable, Suffering is Optional

Chapter Two

The vibrant lights pulsed to the beat of the music as they swept across the many bodies that littered the club. The drone of conversation flowing into the young brunette's ears as she tangled her hands in his long, black hair. Their lips collided, the kisses becoming needier and more urgent as the dancers around them bumped into the couple.

'Let's get out of here,' Alexis breathed into his ear planting kisses along his jaw line before connecting their lips once again.

The pair moved together towards the exit, stumbling as they fought to keep their lips connected. They moved backwards, her back hit the door making no noise audible over the volume of the music and she swept her hands behind her petit figure and hastily pushed open the door.

He reluctantly disconnected their lips as the cool air hit their warm faces and instead grasped her hand as he pulled her towards a row of cars parked across the street. As they neared a small, crimson car he stuck his hand into his pocket, rummaging for a set of keys. Alexis rushed around to the far side of the low vehicle as he scrambled into the car and unlocked her door. She pulled open the door as he pushed from the inside of the car and didn't bother seating herself comfortably on the seat as she pushed her mouth hard against his. His hands toyed with the bottom of his shirt but he grudgingly pulled away as he started the car.

Alexis sat practically on her seat as she fastened her seat belt, noticing that as the striking male drove, he drove carelessly. He was speeding and ran a few red lights, but no other cars were around. It was the dead of night.

He pulled into a parking spot behind an upkept apartment and fumbled with his seatbelt as he hurried to free himself, leaving the car quickly. Alexis followed suit and ended up hand in hand with the male once more. She tugged on his hand as she abruptly stopped inside the complex, and tilted her head upwards connecting their lips in a short kiss.

'What's your name?' she asked as she pulled away.

'Frank,' he breathed over his lips as he pressed his lips to hers once again.

The two moved about the complex, into the elevator, onto another floor ending up outside of Number 24. They stopped kissing long enough for him to unlock the door and guide her inside.

'You know this means...,' he murmured, his hands were on her hips as he led her into his room.

'Nothing,' she said finishing his sentence as she pushed her mouth hard against his.

His shirt lay discarded on the ground as her fingertips dug into the muscles of his back. The kisses were urgently becoming hot and demanding as he pulled her shirt over her head and she fell backwards onto the huge bed.

Alexis blinked unwillingly a few times as she allowed her eyes to become accustomed to the blinding sunlight which was filtering in through an open window. She was in an unfamiliar room, her mouth was dry and she smelt like alcohol. Thank god her head wasn't pounding and she wasn't nauseous.

She quickly sat up and froze as the blackness danced around the edges of her vision waiting for it to disappear. She slowly stood up and covered her unclothed body with a sheet which was loose and at the bottom of the bed. Alexis silently scurried around the room, gathered her garments and dressed making no noise. She gaze swept the room once more for any forgotten items as she saw the red glowing digits on an alarm clock, 9:46. Hopefully no one was awake in this house.

Alexis twisted the bronze doorknob, being careful to stay silent as she slipped into the dim hallway and closed the door making no sound. She walked down the hallway to where she hoped the door would be and as she placed her hand on the doorknob she heard a deep voice.

'Sneaking out are we?' it said and Alexis's head twisted as she noticed a young man, sitting in what seemed to be a kitchen, through an opened archway.

'U-um,' Alexis stuttered.

'So did you have fun last night,' he said smirking as he rested his chin on his hand.

She rolled her eyes and swung open the doorway disappearing before she could make a fool of herself, or worse before her one night stand woke up to find her still in his house. Alexis hurried down the hallway towards the lift, wishing for a glass of water to quench her thirst, and to remove the revolting taste. As she hurried from the building she realized she had no idea where she was, and she started wandering around the neighbourhood.

Eventually Alexis located the club she was at the previous night, and didn't have any trouble finding the narrow streets that led back towards her house. She walked up the cracked concrete path to her front door and stuck her key into the lock and twisted, silently entering her house. She closed the door as quietly as she could, locked it behind her and tiptoed down the hallway towards her room.

When Alexis passed her mother's bedroom door she noticed it ajar and pushed it open slightly to see her mother sleeping on her bed above the covers in yesterday's clothes. Alexis crept inside and covered her mother with a blue blanket, and then left, heading towards her own room.

Alexis grabbed a change of clothes from her closet and walked into the bathroom. She took a shower and did her hair and makeup, preparing for yet another day, the last she'd have that was school free. She ate toast for breakfast, finding nothing else that she could arrange; they needed to get some groceries. As she ate she wondered what her first day of grade 12 in this new place would be like. She wasn't even starting on the same day as everyone else. Since she was moving to the United States from Canada, she was starting the school year late, one week to be exact. Hopefully the students were friendly.

There was one room left to unpack, the office, and that's what Alexis started on after she finished her small breakfast. She moved the wooden bookcase against the beige wall and opened a box that should have contained the books, it did. As she unpack the books, arranging them in proper spots on the shelf she came across a photo album. Alexis couldn't help but take a break and flip through the pages. She sat on the hardwood floor and leant against the hard walls. She glanced at the pages; it started with her brother's baby pictures, and soon had hers. Then it was filled with photographs of the two of them growing up. Alexis couldn't help but let the tears seep from her eyes as she remembered the memories, and then thought of the state her brother was in now.
