The Dark of the Night More Inviting Than the Sunlight

Chapter Three; Chewing Gum.

Dawn's Point of View

The first day at school was pretty interesting. We had a new teacher that was quite odd. He didn't look like a teacher at all with all his tattoos and piercings. Also he seemed too young, though he spoke like every other teacher with an average age of 40 plus. I couldn't deny the fact that he was pretty good-looking, but the way he was bitching about keeping our desks clean was pretty annoying. Enough about him for now.

There was a new student in Dan's class called Bert. It was so amusing to watch Sky drop her chin at the sight of him, that I couldn't help but tease her when she told me that he was 'yummy'. Of course I had noticed the beauty in the guy with greasy black hair and bright blue eyes. His looks had immediately reminded me of Kurt Cobain for some reason.

It was pretty obvious that Sky had started to develop feelings for him at first sight, which delighted me. But also worried me a little because I didn't want my best friend to get her heart broken by some Kurt Cobain-look a like, or anyone else for that matter. I decided that I was going to keep my eyes on him to make sure that he didn't treat my friend badly.

When we got to spend some time with him at lunch I realized that maybe he wasn't so bad after all. He was pretty cool and had a wicked sense of humor, just like Quinn and Dan. On second thought, maybe he was the perfect guy for Sky.

***

All of sudden it was Thursday, our fourth day of school. It hadn't even been a week and the teachers were already giving us homework.

I was sitting in English class looking down at our first writing assignment, eager to get started. Mr. Howard was absent at the moment, searching through the school's storehouse for some lined papers, so I used the opportunity to take my last chewing gum. Of course Quinn noticed and asked me if he could have one, but I shook my head explaining that it was the last one.

"Let me have yours then," he stood in front of my desk wiggling his eyebrows at me.

"Not a chance," I told him mockingly, causing Sky to laugh. With a mischievous smile he leaned in and kissed me before I had a chance to react. He stuck his tongue into my mouth and stole my chewing gum. When he was about to break the kiss I held him back with my hands around his head, determined to get my gum back. No, he's not my boyfriend and I'm not a whore. We're just really good friends that used to go out until we realized that we were better of as friends.

"And what do you two think you're doing?" My heart skipped a beat and we broke the kiss at once. Sky burst out into a fit of laughter next to me and I hid my face behind the assignment paper as Quinn sneaked back to his seat smirking at me.

"This isn't sex education class, you know," Mr. Howard informed us, causing the rest of the class to laugh.

"For your information, there wasn't anything sexual at all about that kiss," I replied gritting my teeth.

"Aw, wasn't it?" I heard Quinn state in faked disappointment, causing the class to laugh even harder and I couldn't help but smile at this comment.

"That's not important, the point is that you're not doing it in my class. Is that understood?" he asked with his arms crossed above chest.

"Sure thing, teach," Quinn smiled. "But can I ask you something?"

"I thought you just did," Mr. Howard replied with a sigh.

"Is it okay to kiss during sex education class?" The class laughed again and I rolled my eyes at Sky who was doodling a caricature of Mr. Howard on my assignment paper.

"Well, you'd have to ask the sexual education teacher about that, wouldn't you Mr. Allman?" Mr. Howard returned sullenly.

I started giggling when I realized how much the doodling Sky was doing really looked like Mr. Howard. He looked like a madman with his tongue hanging out from his gaping mouth and his eyes wide open. She had even added his snakebites the doodle and written 'I'm a sex maniac!' over his head.

"What's so funny, Ms. Jones?" Mr. Howard seemed to be in a bad mood that day.

"Oh nothing," I smiled.

"What's this?" I was about to hide the paper, but he was too quick. His face turned red with anger as he looked at the caricature of himself. "Very mature Ms. Jones," he said angrily. "Detention after school."

"But sir! It wasn't even me who drew it, Sky did!" I objected, my face turning red in frustration. I had never gotten a detention in my whole life and wasn't about to get one this time either, especially not for something someone else did.

"Then detention to you too Ms. Stevens, five o'clock. Don't be late," he said making his way to the front of the class room.

"Bitch," I muttered under my breathe. Sky and I exchanged knowing glances and spent the rest of class shooting glares in Mr. Howard's direction every now and then.
