That Should Be Me

Kelsey and I went back home cause things got a little awkward between us all. Hours passed and I hadn’t spoken to anyone, I got up from the couch and grabbed my keys off the table.

“Where are you going?” Kelsey asked me

“Out” I said and I left.

I knocked on D’s door and she answered it.

“Hey, can we talk?” I asked her

“Sure, come in” she said and she shut the door behind me

“Is Haley here?” I asked hoping we were alone.

“Nope” she said as she took a seat beside me on the couch

“So what’s up?” she asked.

“What happened today, I’m really sorry” I told her

“It’s fine, she doesn’t like me” she said.

“She’s jealous” I told her, she rolled her eyes

“There is nothing to be jealous about” she said, I laughed a little

“Sure there is, you’re insanely beautiful, we dated for over two years, I love you, I’m in love with you, you’re sexy… want me to keep going?” I asked, she shook her head, no and I pulled her close

I sighed and realized something, “This isn’t going to work. Is it?” I asked quietly, sadly she shook her head no and I stood quiet.

“What you did this morning was sweet” she said referring to what I had written on her mirror earlier. I shook my head and whispered, “Yeah”

“You’re still my best friend you know.” She said

“I don’t want to be your best friend D” I told her

“Fine then I guess we can’t be friends.” She told me

“You don’t get it though D, I don’t want to be your best friend anymore” I said

“Okay Nick I get it, we just aren’t going to be friends anymore so I guess you can leave now” She said as she stood up

“D you have to know why I don’t want to be your best friend”

“Nick we already established this isn’t going to wor-” I kissed her mid sentence

“Not going to work for you? I don’t care” I said “I’ll make you be with me D” I said with a smirk.

“Nick you can’t make me do anything” she said

“Try me.” I told her

“You’re an asshole” she stated

“I might be an asshole, but you love me” I said as I pulled her closer to me, I leaned in to kiss her and the doorbell rang and I sighed

“I’ll be right back” she said, as she started to walk away I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me, kissing her

“I love you” I said, she sighed

“I love you” she said back and the doorbell rang again

“Seriously it’s late, who could that even be?” I asked, she shrugged and answered the door and I went with her

“Oh uh hi Ricky” D said

“Hi babe, oh I didn’t expect him to be here.” He said

“Yeah we we’re just hanging out” D said

“Can I come in?” He asked

“Uh sure.” She said inviting him and closing the door behind him. Ricky kept his eye on me

“D can we talk?” Ricky asked her

“Uh yeah okay” She said as she looked at me, I understood and I went upstairs, I sat at the top of the steps, out of sight.

“D I’ve been worried about you; you haven’t been answering my calls, responding to my texts.” I heard Ricky say

"Sorry I’ve been busy” was all D said

“But you have time for… for that douche upstairs?” he asked

“His name is Nick” She corrected him.

“I don’t care, I thought you said you two were only best friends” he stated

“We are” she told him

“Baby I just, you know I love you babe” he said, I hated hearing him call my baby, babe.

“I know” she replied

“Do you have ‘feelings’ for this Nick guy?” Ricky asked,

Here is the moment of truth. The moment that could push Ricky out of D's life. D stood quiet.

“No.” she said

“So you don’t like love him or anything” Ricky said

“No” she repeated

What?

My heart felt like it was ripped out of my chest, I really thought she'd tell him

“Good, I just came to check up on you. I will text you later, love you” he said and he kissed her.

Not only did my heart feel like it was ripped out of my chest but it felt like it was stepped on. I felt a lump in my throat and I went to D’s room.

After a few minutes D came upstairs alone, no Ricky.

“Hi” she said

“Hi” I whispered. She sat beside me on her bed

“So you seriously don’t love me?” I asked and she looked at me but didn’t say a word “I guess I’m going to go then.” I said as I stood up and walked to her door

“Nicholas” she said I seriously felt like I was going to burst into tears.

“What?” I said, my voice sounding higher then usual. I felt her arms wrap around me from behind

“Please, don’t go” she said
