The Forbidden Fruit

Chapter 33

“Hey Maria.” Derrick smiled at me.

“Hey.” I smiled back, setting my things down on my desk.

“Look, I’m sorry about last night.”

“It’s fine.” I shook my head.

He looked at me, confused, “It’s fine that I mixed you up with Kacey?”

“Well, no…” I thought about it, “But I’m over it.”

“What are you talking about?”

I sighed and turned to him, “I’m over it. Don’t worry about it.”

“You’re not-” The bell rang and cut him off.

“Still tan as ever.” Shane smiled.

“It’s only been a day.” I said slowly.

“I know.” He shrugged playfully.

“So, where’s my apple?” I asked, folding my arms on the table.

“Where’s your math homework?”

“We had none. I’m hungry.”

“They had really good cheesecake today.” He said, motioning towards it, “I had to sub it out.”

“That’s alright.” I shrugged, “I’ll just starve.”

“Maria, come on.” He whined.

“I’m kidding!” I laughed, “I’m not even hungry.”

“You’re too good at that.” He raised an eyebrow, “Stop doing it.”

-------------------------

“How your boy trouble?” My Mom asked, stirring some pasta on the stove.

“The same. I didn’t really talk to him today.”

“Dinner will be ready soon.”

“Uh, I’m not all that hungry.” I shrugged.

“Well, leftovers will be in the fridge.”

“I’ll make sure to get some of those. Your pasta is the best.”

I ran up the stairs to my bedroom and flopped onto my bed, taking out my Geography homework. I pulled my laptop out from under my bed and opened iTunes, playing my homework playlist.

---------------------

“Hello?” I asked, holding the phone up to my ear.

“Maria, what was up with today?”

“What do you mean? Everything’s normal.”

“You seem… weird.”

“Well, I’m fine.” I said, changing the song on my laptop, “Why are you worried?”

“I just was wondering why you’re so… distant, almost.”

“I just had a talk with my Mom, I guess.”

“Oh God, does she know?”

“No, I’m not dumb.” I rolled my eyes.

“What’d you guys talk about?”

“We just talked about if we should work on this or not. Like, if it’s even worth it.”

The other end was silent for a moment, “What conclusion did you come to?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“I think that we should work this out.”

“That’s only half of the problem.”

“What’s the whole problem, then?”

“Well I feel I have to be cautious with you, because you fly off the handle so easily.”

“I just have a lot a stake.”

“And I don’t?”

“I know that, it’s just… I don’t want to ruin our lives.”

“You’re just too closed off. It’s like you’re afraid to jump.”

“I’ll think about this, okay?”

“Fine.” I sighed and closed my phone.

I fell back onto my bed and stared at the ceiling. The creamy white was intriguing, yet boring. I followed the ceiling to where it met the wall, then down the bright yellow-green wall to my white door. The door was covered with random band posters and pictures of my friends and family back home. I rolled out of bed and down to the kitchen, in hunt for my Mom’s pasta.

So, since I have college tomorrow, this is tomorrow's update.
Which means, no update tomorrow.

I know, sucky, but very close to the end.
