Do You Believe In Angels?

Chapter 4

"So. You like-" Duff chewed his Saltine cracker."The Beach Boys, too?"

"Very much.' I lied slightly. I couldn't name one song.

"Good." he smiled his smile, and plopped another cracker in his mouth. We were sitting on an unmoving carasel. The carnival had long ago left, abandoning the ride. We were the only ones about. As he moved closer to me, I blushed a dark crimson.

"Ye-yeah." I noticed his arm, now touching mine, he was so close. It had been a week now; Duff had grown to become not only my only friend, but my BEST friend.

"Annabell Greene." It sounded entirely too good to hear my name uettered from his lips.

"Yes?" I swallowed.

Duff didn't say anything. Nothing at all. He didn't have to. As his lips came closer to my own, I panicked, but in a gleeful way. When our lips connected, I jumped, as a spark harder, and better, than electricity hit me. He knew what to do, why I, non-suspecting and less experienced, did not.

After maybe minutes, probably seconds, I realized what exactly I was doing. Would I , could I, jeapordize my only friendship for a summer fling?

I pulled away, my face flushed with embarressment. "What are we doing?' I yelled. I had not meant to raise my voice, but he showed no emotion, as if I hadn't.

"What are you doing?" Duff asked, relaxed.

"I- I- YOU kissed ME, remember?"

"But you liked it." Duff's face remained the same, innocent and confident.

"I- I did not." I fibbed. I had loved it.

Duff looked at me, reading my mind once again. I saw a glimmer of hurt in his eyes, briefly, quickly replaced with his usual stance.

Duff got up, standing next to me. He looked rigth into my eyes for a moment, but it was I who broke the stare. He kissed my lips lightly, and walked away.
