Within You, Without You
1 of 1
“Ah! What’s the word, what’s the word, what’s the word I yelled?”, stalking around my apartment.
“What’s your problem Jon?” Trish asked, appearing out of the bathroom.
“I can’t remember the freaking word!” I exclaimed. “I had it two minutes ago, I said this word is going to go write here, but now I can’t remember it!”
Trish peered over my shoulder at the paper that was in my hand.
“Talking,” she said, “We were talking about the space.”
“Oh yes!” I cried. “You’re a genius Trish, a freaking genius!”
“Within you, without you. Ring any bells?” Trish asked.
“Nope. Why? Should it?”
“Well yeah! That’s the song it’s from!” Trish exclaimed.
“Oh,” I said, for lack of a better word.
__
We were talking-about the space between us all
And the people-who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth-then it's far too late-when they pass away.
__
“Yo, Beth!” I exclaimed, waving to my friend.
“Hey Liz!” she replied. Yes, we share a name, so we have different nicknames.
“Did you hear the song? The Beatles one they started playing on the radio?” she asked.
“Mhm, well I heard the re-make some band or another made, but I’m sure it’s pretty much the same thing,” I replied.
“I find it so strange. No lyrics or anything,” she said.
“There are lyrics though! I looked it up because it was bugging me,” I said.
__
We were talking-about the love we all could share-when we find it
To try our best to hold it there-with our love
With our love-we could save the world-if they only knew.
__
“I don’t get it! I don’t get it! Where have I heard that song before? Where?” I shrieked.
“Josy, what’s wrong?” Ken asked.
“Here, listen to this. I know the song, but I can’t place it!” I said, forcing the headphones into his hands.
He listens for a couple seconds.
“It’s the Beatles sweetheart. Of course you’d be able to recognize it,” he said.
“Seriously!?”
“Yeah, the band probably played it at the Beatles tribute.”
“Oh, yeah, probably.”
__
Try to realize it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small
__
“Dude! What is this stuff?” I asked.
“It’s music. Good, old-fashioned music,” Mark said.
“Sounds more like racket to me, not music,” I said.
“Seth, it’s the Beatles. You normally love the Beatles. Can’t you even identify their songs anymore?”
“What? The Beatles? You must be kidding me,” I said.
“Nope, it’s them,” Mark said, putting his headphones back in.
__
And life flows ON within you and without you.
We were talking-about the love that's gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul
__
“Stupid test,” I muttered, slamming open my locker.
“Oh come on, it wasn’t that hard,” Patrick said, opening his next to me.
“For you maybe,” I whispered, hoping he didn’t hear.
“Pardon?” he asked.
“Nothing, just talking to myself,” I replied, grabbing my I-Pod and slamming my locker shut.
“Someone has anger management problems,” Patrick said, following me outside.
“I do not,” I protested, turning on my music.
__
They don't know-they can't see-are you one of them?
When you've seen beyond yourself-then you may find, peace of mind,
Is waiting there
__
“My computer’s going to explode,” Heath said.
“Why? What’s happening?” I asked.
“Too much open at the same time,” Heath replied, frantically typing on the keyboard.
“Then close something,” I said.
“I can’t. I need everything open,” he said.
“Can you put some music on?” I asked after a couple minutes of silence.
“Sure,” he answered.
__
And the time will come when you see
we're all one, and life flows on within you and without you.
