Look at Me

11.

Shit. That was actually good. Just when she was getting good and pissed off at Terry she went and did something really nice. Paige glanced nervously at Hayden and realized he looked kind of scared. He had that I’M GOING TO BACK AWAY SLOWLY NOW expression that was normally reserved for wild animals.
Oh God, what was she doing? She was ruining it.
Quick, she thought frantically. Say something friendly!
“I’m…I’m glad you’re coming with us,” Paige said haltingly, like she was suddenly having trouble with the English language.
And she kind of was. Paige had just noticed the first few buttons on Hayden’s shirt were undone and she could see the pale sleek line of his throat. And that of course got her thinking about his shirtless chest crushed against hers…
And his pants. Damn, they fit him good!

Hayden wasn’t sure he’d ever been officially “Checked Out.” As Paige’s eyes lingered on him a little longer then they normally would, he had to wonder if it was finally happening. His lips pulled up in an unintentional smirk and Paige’s eyes widened a little. And it wasn’t OhMiGod you’re a freak wide either. At least it didn’t look like it. It looked like OhMiGod your hot widening.
“I’m glad I’m coming too,” he said in what he hoped was a sexy husky voice. Then he thought how wrong that sounded in a different context and he half choked on the laughter bubbling in his throat.

What is he laughing at, Paige wondered confusedly. Then she thought about it for a second.
God boys were stupid. They never got past five on the inside. But then maybe she wouldn’t either, because it was suddenly really hard not to smile.
The half awkward, half sexy moment came to a sudden halt when Hayden’s cell phone began to persistently ring. He took it out of his pocket and glanced at the caller I.D.
“Give me a sec,” he said before he quickly walked to the end of the driveway.

“Hayden! Are you there?”
His mother’s voice sounded frantic over the static filled line. In the background Hayden could hear a loud banging noise.
“Mom, what’s wrong,” he asked tightly, as he unknowingly began to pace back and forth.
“Where…where are you?”
“I’m with some friends,” he replied as he glanced up at Paige from beneath his lashes. Hayden noticed the slight shift in her body and the way she rocked forward on her heels. She was to polite to invade his privacy, but clearly she was wondering what was the matter. “What is it Mom? Are you okay?”
Muffled sobs filled his ears as the pounding got louder.
Then his mother whispered brokenly, “Don’t come home Hayden. Whatever you do just don’t…”
The violent sound of breaking wood and his mother’s pitiful screams were the last thing he heard before the line went dead.
