Look at Me

28.

April 12, 1999

“Forgive me Father for I have sinned…”
“Go on my son,” Father Mc’Laulin said as solemnly as he could, even as the corners of his mouth pulled up into a smile.
“I…I think Father…I’m not sure, but I think I might be possessed with an evil spirit. You know the kind that Sister Harriet talks about…” the small voice whispered uncertainly before trailing off altogether.
Mc’Laulin sighed at the earnest fear in the young boys tone. He’d clearly been listening to the bitter old Nun harp on about the evils of video games and a new book called Harry Potter. Both were strictly forbidden at Our Lady of Sorrows orphanage, but the boys had a way of getting things they weren’t supposed to.
A game called Dungeons and Dragons had been recently discovered in the dormitory and Sister Harriet had ranted that an evil spirit had possessed every boy in the home. So, it wasn’t surprising that somber little Gabriel Vern had taken her seriously. His wide almost colorless eyes had been as saucers as she spouted fire and brimstone.
“What makes you think that,” the priest asked even though he already knew the answer.
“Well,” the boy said slowly. “I …I don’t know Father…I just…”

Gabriel lost his courage. He wanted to tell Father Mc’Laulin about what had happened, but he could just picture the priest screaming and slamming the Bible like Sister Harriet. So, he licked his lips and made up a lie.

Gabriel stared at his school desk. He didn’t look at the other boys and he pretended not to hear their whispers.
Father Mc’Laulin droned on about something having to do with Algebra, but Gage didn’t really hear him either.
He focused on the grain of the wood in his desk and the low hum of the air conditioning.
Thum…Brrrrr…Thum…
His eyes drifted closed and he felt it. That sensation of ultimate calm that came before he shifted. That’s how he’d come to think of it.
Shape shifting.
That sounded way more awesome and a lot less threatening then Were-wolf. Were-wolf just made him think of a bad 1980’s movie starring Michael J. Fox.
As, if he wasn’t enough of a freak already. He didn’t need to hear them to know the other boy’s were whispering about him. Well…to be perfectly fair they could be whispering about Sister Aileen. She was a beautiful new Nun with perfect hazel eyes that made every boy in school go weak in the knees.
She was like a miracle in a boy’s home (Orphanage) where it seemed like you had to be at LEAST 65 to even be considered for a position in the place.
Much to Gabriel and several other boys’ embarrassment, they’d all started to make “comments” about Sister Beatrice out of sheer desperation. She did have nice legs for a 35-year-old woman…
But now Gabe had Aileen to dream about.
Perfect....Beautiful...Ethereal...Aileen.
