Look at Me

5.

Shit! Shit! Shit! Paige thought frantically as Hayden moved. This is it. This is the part where he wakes up and starts making out with me.
Her whole body tensed as she imagined Hayden’s skeletal form pressed against her own, his bony chest crushing hers in a tight embrace. And when his lips touched hers, would they be cold? Would it be like kissing a corpse? She waited to find out, but then… he didn’t wake up.
Hayden shifted positions and went from lying on his side to his back. But he did not wake up. Paige couldn’t help feeling a little bit disappointed. Even though the idea of kissing Hayden was sort of creepy, it was a freaking sex dream wasn’t it!
She wasn’t stupid enough to be having a SLEEP dream was she? Biting her lip, Paige hesitantly leaned closer to get a better glance at the boy next to her.
He looked…different somehow, from the way he usually did. The lines of his gaunt face weren’t quite as sharp and his hair had fallen out of his eyes to reveal pale purple lids. She absently wondered what color his eyes were and then she wondered if she was brave enough to find out.
Am I brave enough to kiss him, Paige asked herself as her throat went suddenly dry.
It was just a dream. Nothing bad could happen, so why not? Why not try it?
She’d never actually kissed anyone before. That was BEYOND EMBARRASSING because she was almost eighteen, but it had just never happened. No one had ever really noticed her.
So why not kiss Hayden? It was just a dream…

Hayden felt something…
Light as moth’s wings it touched his mouth. Then it turned into a gentle pressure, a steady intimate touch. His eyes snapped open and he realized that Paige Brinkley was kissing him. Hayden realized her hands were resting lightly on his bare shoulders and her lips were pressing against his own.
What the fuck? She’d found him naked in her bed so she just thought, why not? He should have known spending the night was a bad idea. He should have known he might change in his sleep. It had happened before.
Hayden felt her fingers start to thread through his hair and shock jolted him into a sitting position.
His hands tugged her roughly back and he snapped a little more sharply then he meant to, “What are you doing!”
Then he was even more shocked, because Paige’s face twisted into an expression that seemed like…irritation???
“This dream sucks ass,” she mumbled under her breath as she rocked back on her heels.
Suddenly it made sense. Paige thought she was dreaming. But why would she dream about him, unless…Did she like him? Did she normally have dreams where they kissed?
Hayden heart sped up several beats as he looked at the girl in front of him. The girl he hated. The girl he wanted more then anything. And then without thinking he pulled her back against him.
It was stupid.
t was wrong.
But he just couldn’t make himself care at that moment.

Kissing Hayden (at least in her dream) was NOT like kissing a corpse. His lips weren’t cold at all. As they crushed against her, they were warm and soft and she wondered if he would taste as good in real life.
And his chest was not bony. Muscles she wouldn’t have guessed at pressed into her body as his arms wrapped around her like steel bands. It felt like she was being absorbed into him, like the tighter Hayden held her the more she ceased to exist. Nothing was real but him. Nothing mattered but him…
Then, just as his tongue started to trace the shape of her mouth, Hayden pushed her away again.
“ Paige,” he whispered, his breath hot in her ear.
“Yes?” she replied, half afraid of what he might say.
“Close your eyes.”
“What?”
“Please,” he said with a strange desperation. “Just… do it.”
Paige tried to look up. She wanted to finally see what was hidden in his eyes. But he was holding her too tightly against his chest. And as she lay there, the dimly lit room started to go a little blurry. Maybe she was waking up.
“This dream really does suck,” she mumbled before her lids finally closed.
