There's Too Much Green To Feel Blue

Neighbors

When Peter and Lily had had their fill of food, all three of them went to the bottom floor and asked the short, dirty grungy looking man in the reception area if the room was still available. When he had said yes, Sam used her very effective persuasive skills as best as she could through the glass on the small booth that separated them and the attendant. It didn't take long for the man to nod his approval. When he did, Sam threw open the door to the left of his office booth, kissed him on the cheek and hugged him. It was when the man closed his eyes, sighed and hugged her tight when Peter went in there, Lily in hand, grabbed Sam's arm and pulled her away. Sam blew a final kiss at the man as they left to Peter's car. On the car ride to Sam's house, Sam couldn't help but to poke Peter's belly and compliment his tight gray jeans and light gray body hugging hoodie.
When they arrived, the old man was there. He started yelling at the sight of Sam and she just got out of the car, marched right up to him and yelled back. Pete made sure that he and Lily watched from a distance, in case Sam started throwing things. Peter couldn't help but chuckle when the old man shouted unintelligable words and waved his arms around. He laughed harder when Sam mimicked him. However, he didn't intervene until Sam bent down and grabbed a rock. He ran in between them and calmly assured the man that if he let Sam stay one more night he'd take her off his hands, to which the man gratefully hugged him, thanked the lord and cried on his shoulder. Sam was able to pack most of her things into boxes and while she was doing that, Pete walked with Lily a few houses down and explained the situation to his mother.
"It's just like that girl to have you bending over backwards for her and not do anything for you in return," she said shaking her head and handing Lily a cup of juice.
"Actually, she's been a big help. She's working out fine." Peter defended.
After a few moments, Peter convinced his mother to care for Lily one last time, went back to Sam's house and loaded half of her things in the car.
"What about the rest of your things?" Peter asked as Sam bent to pick up the last box, "How will you bring them to the apartments?"
Sam looked at him and smiled, "I'll manage."
"How?" Peter asked.
"Let's just say I have people." Sam said, putting the last box in the trunk.
Sam insisted on riding back with Peter to help him carry the boxes to his apartment where they would stay until she got the key to her apartment. It took them a good thirty minutes to get everything in and Lily wasn't helping by prancing around their legs and singing happily because Sam would be closer.
"Told you she'd be a bother." Peter said, on the elevator.
When they carried up the last boxes to Peter's apartment, Lily stamped her feet angrily because Sam had to go.
"It's just for one more day, Lily!" Peter cried as Lily began to scream in frustration. "Tomorrow she'll be living two floors up!" he pointed to the ceiling.
Lily's screaming slowed and stopped, "Tomorrow, really?" Lily asked.
"I promise." Sam said. She got down on her knees, "Look," she fumbled with a bracelet on her wrist, "This is a promise bracelet and I am going to give it to you," she took Lily's small wrist and tied the bracelet around it, "There. That's how you know I'm going to be back tomorrow and I'll be living upstairs."
Lily stared at her left hand and marveled at her bracelet.
"You believe us now?" Sam asked standing up.
"Yes." Lily said happily.
"Never doubt me or your father." Sam said, "We're always right." Sam looked around the room, "Well, then, I guess I'll be leaving. 'Night, girlie. Peter, God speed," she turned to leave.
"Wait, do you want a ride home?" Peter asked.
"Peter, don't start, you did more than enough for me today." Sam said, "I'll see you tomorrow when you get back from work."
"She's not coming here tomorrow?" Lily cried.
Lily dashed for Sam. Peter reached out and grabbed her.
"Sam, leave!" Peter yelled over Lily's crying.
Sam ran out the door without a backward glance. She happily went down the elevator and practically skipped out of the apartment building.
"Bye!" she waved at the dirty attendant.
The attendant waved back excitedly, "Bye!"

----------------------------------------------------------

Sam showed up at her usual time at Peter's apartment, much to his surprise.
"What are you doing here?" Peter asked as she walked in.
He was dressed in a black muscle shirt, black p.j. pants and a black beanie.
"Oh, Peter, I had to see you again." Sam whispered seductively.
"What?" Peter asked, dropping his beanie as he slipped it off.
Sam laughed out loud, still holding onto the doorknob, "The face you made is priceless!"
"Why'd you come today?" Peter asked rolling his eyes.
"I came to make you breakfast," she answered. She walked to the kitchen toward him.
"Sam, you don't--"
"Peter, I doubt you'll have a good morning without me," she said. She plucked the small pink bow from her hair and placed it in Peter's messed up hair, "There, now you look pretty!" Sam grinned as she slipped on his beanie. She giggled, "Look, I'm Peter!" she opened her eyes wide and let her mouth fall open.
"Shut up!" Peter laughed.
They heard giggles. Peter turned and saw Lily in her p.j.'s. She giggled harder when she saw the bow in Peter's hair.
"Get dressed both of you, I'll cook." Sam turned to the fridge.
Later on, as soon as Peter and Lily left the apartment, Sam wanted to move her things. But she first had to go to the first floor and ask the attendant for the key.
"Hi there, sir!" Sam said cheerfully when she reached the glass window of his booth office.
The guy smiled and leaned forward on his elbows. He had black framed glasses that weren't there the day before. His unbrushed blond hair reached to his neck. His cheeks had the appearance of not having been clean shaven for a few days and he had a loose fitting black jacket.
"Call me Robert," he said.
"Okay, Rob, it's Sam." she smiled as Robert laughed.
"May I have my key now, Berty?"
Robert pulled out the key, looked at Sam and engaged her in conversation. Although Sam didn't mind the small talk, she did mind that he kept dangling the key in front of her and then snatching it back when she reached out for it. When the conversation turned to sex, Sam had enough.
"Robert, I would love to carry on this fantastic conversation but I'm expecting to sleep in my apartment tonight, so if you don't mind..." she reached out for the key.
The first part was easy. All she had to do was take the boxes from Peter's apartment to hers. She had just finished taking the last box at noon when her cell phone rang. Her friend Gabe called to say he was dropping off her stuff. He pulled up in his car and they both carried the boxes into the lobby area. Halfway through, she showed him her apartment where he turned on the radio. They danced for a little while and then they went back to gathering the last boxes and putting them in the lobby. When they finished, Gabe received a phone call and had to leave immediately. He exited the building, blew a kiss at Sam and got into his car.
"Who was that guy?" Robert asked watching Sam.
"My friend." Sam answered picking up a box.
"Why was he dressed like he was going to a club?" he asked.
"Cause that's all he ever does." Sam said.
She began to take box after box to her room by the elevator. Althoug Robert insisted on helping her time and time again, she declined. She brought up every box with pleasure. It was like a game to her and she stopped only to occasionally roll up her sleeves.
Over all, she thought the building that would become her home was charming and perfect for her. The building was tall and wide and conveniently located in front of a busy street that had permanent speeding cars and traffic. It was fine for her, she could exit the building and catch a cab in ten seconds. She loved every part of the building. In fact, that morning, she had stopped and looked at the building with it's many windows before she had gone in to see Peter. The apartments were small and the hallways were narrow, but she thought it was cozy and she was happy with it.
When she was coming back from her fourth trip, Robert announced it was his lunch time and offered to take her.
"Um, I'll have to take a rain check." Sam said, her hands on her hips as she surveyed the many boxes she still had left.
"Okay." Robert said. He left the building.
Hardly three minutes had passed when Sam was about to pick up a box and a soccer ball hit her in the back of the head. Sam dropped the box and grabbed the ball.
A tall white complected, skinny man with long brown hair walked through the door.
"Hey, watch where my ball is going!" he yelled rudely.
Sam turned to the man with they tight v-neck light green shirt, tight jeans and brown thong sandals.
"Okay, I'll watch your ball....as it rolls away into the street!"
Sam dashed passed the man and opened the building doors. She knew she loved this building and its location. The street before her never ceased to have speeding cars. She stood in the doorway, and kicked the ball into open traffic. She turned and smirked at the man.
"Bitch!" he yelled at her. He then turned and went up the stairs that led up to the elevator.
"Trust fund kid!" Sam yelled back.
Fuming, Sam turned back to the boxes. Fueled by her anger, she was able to get all but one box up in fifteen minutes. She went back for the final box, took the elevator and went up to her door. That's when she noticed that she had closed the door on her last trip. She shifted the box to her left arm while she fumbled in her pockets for her keys with her right. While she patted her pockets, she didn't noticed the tall, skinny man walk up behind her.
"You're my new neighbor?" he asked incredulously.
Sam raised her head up at the voice. She slowly turned around and faced the man who used to have the soccer ball.
"Wow, I hadn't gotten a good look at you," he said, looking her up and down.
He crossed his arms and grinned, "So, you from the country?" he asked looking at her light pink muscle shirt, her matching small slip on shoes, her cut off jean shorts, her light blue flannel shirt and the small pink bow on her head.
"No." Sam said cautiously.
"Those colors are nice on your white skin," he complimented.
She was a little irritated, her skin wasn't that white, but she wasn't tan either.
"Thanks, slick." Sam said turning back to her door.
The man grinned wider. He liked her comment.
"Do you need help with that?" the man quickly grabbed the box from her.
"Yeah, thanks." Sam said perplexed.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the key. She opened the door.
"I'll take it from here." Sam tried to grab the box.
"No, I got it," the man stepped into the apartment.
"Why are you being so nice when you went all 'bitch, please' on me in the lobby?" Sam asked.
"You'd be surprised at what I could do to get laid."
The bell's inside Sam's head immediately began to ding.
He set the box down near a closed window. The sunlight streamed in through it brightly and illuminated the guy.
"So, what's your name?" he asked putting his hands on his hips.
"You know, I just realized," she said from the doorway, key still in hand, "I haven't even moved in yet and I've already got a strange man in my apartment."
"Would you like to go to my apartment so we can call it even?" he said slyly.
Sam stared at him, "It's Sam," she said.
"William Beckett," he said, "There, we're not strangers anymore. Would you like to come to my room now?"
"I'm okay," she said.
"You know those clothes look really good on you," he smiled, "They'd look even better thrown on my bedroom floor," he hinted.
"Actually, I think they look better on me right now." Sam said looking down at herself.
"Why don't you give me a chance to see them on my bedroom floor and then I'll tell you where they look better," he said suavely.
Sam grinned, "Okay, come here, big boy," she held out her hand.
Smirking, William took her hand. Sam held the door open and pulled him out. When he was in the hallway, she stroked his cheek and then quickly let go of him and retreated into her apartment before he could move. She locked the door and leaned against it.
"Tease!" he called through the door.
Sam laughed, waited until she heard William go into his apartment. She took a deep breath and then began to unpack her things.
