Into Your Arms

Chapter 3 (Tegan)

After a good ten minute drive Ella and I had arrived at a local ice cream shop that everyone in the Arizona-California area knew and loved; needless to say it was a little crowded even though it was a Sunday night. Turning off the car I turned to Ella seeing that her face mirrored the disappointment that mine currently held. I sighed while brainstorming for an idea.

“We’ll just go see how long the wait is” I said while undoing my seatbelt and exiting my black VW bug; Ella soon followed suit and we made our way to the front of the ice cream shop. Glancing around I became weary. I was counting on this to get Ella’s spirit up, but with just one look I knew that it’d be a good hour or so before we’d be out of here with our sugary treats. Sighing once again I stopped to think, only seconds later being knocked out of my plan forming mind set.

“…Tegan?” A voice asked seeming a little unsure yet hopeful at the same time. As I turned I saw none other than John waving to me from his spot toward the front of the line. Returning his wave Ella and I walked over sliding in front of him to join the wait. All the while I made a mental note to remind myself to kiss John’s feet for this, though of course not in the literal sense.

Small talk soon overtook the three of us and before long we were each ordering our ice cream, which John so kindly paid for. Shortly after we evacuated the building and instead vouched for a less crowded area with a table and chairs. Conversation struck once more, this time laced with laughs and embarrassing stories; any passer by would think that the three of us were the closest of friends, though we were nearly strangers. As John wrapped up a story about the time that Garrett and Jared attempted to moon his neighbors Ella nudged me flashing her watch in my face. Time had flown by; it was now nearly ten o’clock. The ice cream place had closed an hour prior and people had slowly left the premises until there were only the three of us remaining. Ella said a quick goodbye to John and hurried off to the car to answer her ringing cell phone. As the two of us watched her walk away we both laughed a little, my mind racing all the while.

“I have a question” he said interrupting my thoughts once more. Looking up into his eyes I couldn’t help but smile, he was so nearly perfect.
“Spill” I replied simply never taking my eyes from his.

“I was wondering, if you weren’t busy on Friday, if you wanted to come to our show. I’m sure you know that Pat has already invited Ella, and I thought that maybe you and I could hang out some more, just me and you.” At that I gulped. What now? ‘I have a boyfriend’. ‘I have a boyfriend’. ‘I have a boyfriend’. After repeating that phrase multiple times over and over in my head, I smiled at John and accepted his invitation. After all, I was sure that John only saw me as a friend anyway, if even that, so why not go have fun? After I agreed to go, John’s smile grew even wider, or was that just my imagination? Our eyes met once again before my mind flashed back to Ella patiently waiting in the car.

“I…I’ve got to head back John. Ella’s waiting and we both have an early class tomorrow” I said knowing that if I didn’t go now, I’d never leave. He nodded his head in understanding while his mind seemed to wander. After asking for my phone he inserted his contact information and saved it.

“Call me, text me, anything. I’ll see you around gorgeous” he said with a smirk and with that he walked away, while I headed back to my car half way in a daze. Upon arriving back at our dorm Ella and I changed into our pajamas and gushed about the details of the night. We were both extremely excited about our ‘date’ with the boys on Friday, and kept pushing the idea of sleep further and further to the back of our minds. After finally winding down I felt my eyelids begin to droop, and just as I almost gave into sleep my phone vibrated next to me. Peeling open my eyes just a speck I opened my phone to see the next text message I’d just received. It was from John; ‘Goodnight Tegan, it was nice seeing you today, and I can’t wait until Friday. John <3’, it read. After reading it I felt a smile grace my lips and I soon let sleep take over my body.

The next week was a complete and total blur. If you’d point blankly asked me what had happened in any of my classes I was sure that I’d mumble a sentence about talking to Ella online and daydreaming about John, not even kidding. Classes had been uneventful and the nights had been filled with endless hours of homework. Oh, how college could be a pain in the rear. On Friday’s, mine and Ella’s last class of the day let out at the same time, so when the clock tolled three we both sped out of our classes, meeting at the end of the hallway, and made our way back to our room. The two of us chatted animatedly all the way there about how to spend our weekend, when we both stopped to think. Today was Friday, Friday as in the day we’d both been waiting for all week. With wide eyes and upraised eyebrows we both began running around the room trying to get ready to see John and Pat.
After finishing my shower I glanced down at my phone. I had a new text from Derek, my missing in action boyfriend. ‘I miss you baby girl’ I read aloud. Ella looked at me as her face scrunched up in disgust. I sighed knowing what was coming next.

“Would you just dump him already Tea”, she asked, a silent plea obvious in her voice. I looked up to meet my best friend’s eyes. Maybe she had a point, after all Derek was a real jerk to me most of the time, but how could I just turn around and walk away? I wasn’t as strong as Ella and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to handle being alone. The thought of John instantly sprung into my head, though I quickly got rid of it. I wasn’t even sure that John had feelings for me anyway, there was no point in throwing a perfectly good…okay, decent relationship over a chance, and with that my decision was made. I was staying with Derek.
As we made our way to the venue I couldn’t help but to feel like I was betraying my boyfriend, Derek. No one deserved to be cheated on, no matter what their character traits may be. After Ella pulled into a parking space we both exited the car and headed to wait in line at the door. Only a few minutes later I spotted John over by a nearby gate talking to some fans, and oh how my heartbeat sped up.
