Into Your Arms

Chapter 5 (Tegan)

Needless to say I was nervous even before the night began, but as soon as my eyes met John’s I couldn’t help but smile. He was gorgeous in so many ways; he could easily pass as an Abercrombie model if he started being a jerk and walking around half naked. I wouldn’t complain about the last part. After a handful of words were exchanged the four of us, John, Ella, Pat, and I, headed into the venue. As we entered I couldn’t help but to glance around at all of the kids surrounding me, they were everywhere. The Maine wasn’t that popular of a band at the time, so I guess you could say that they were just getting a following. The four of us slipped backstage to wait until the lights dimmed, so that John and Pat wouldn’t be recognized. When the time came John and I slipped out into the very back of the crowd to watch the opening band. We danced around and talked as the local band played; I had to admit that they were good.

A few songs into their set John announced that he had to go to the restroom and so I was left alone tapping my foot to the beat and waiting for his return. Not long after his departure I felt a hand grasp my shoulder. Turning, my eyes grew wide with shock. There beside of me stood Derek, my boyfriend, whom I hadn’t talked to in more than a few days. Once my eyes met his, I instantly knew that he had something up his sleeve.

“Heyyy Tegan” he stuttered as he pulled me closer to him. It was evident that he was drunk by his slurred speech and the alcohol on his breath. Closing my eyes I couldn’t help but hope that John would return soon and come back for me. After opening my eyes and continuing to ignore his greeting, I focused on my feet, trying to concentrate on anything but him. “Tegan baby, I’ve missed having you around” he muttered in my ear while giving my waist a squeeze. By then, I honestly wanted to puke. This wasn’t the guy that I used to know, but then again did I ever know him at all? After gathering up the courage I said:

“Leave me alone Derek, you’re drunk.” And with that he laughed, a smirk forming on his face all too quickly. As one of his hands began to slip further and further down my back I spoke again, “Get away from me Derek”. This time his smile faded and his eyes turned to slits of anger, and with that I knew I had made a mistake. His breathing sped up and his face seemed like it would explode any minute. I couldn’t help but cross my fingers that John would appear, after all, Ella and I had told him all about Derek over ice cream a few nights before. And it seems that as soon as that thought left my mind he appeared, John I mean.
His eyes found mine in a matter of minutes, and it was obvious that he was taking in the scene. He could see my eyes rigid with fear, and Derek’s hands tightly holding onto the most private places of my body. As John made his way to us everything seemed to standstill. It’s still hard to recall what happened in those next few minutes. All of a sudden, John and Derek were yelling at each other, and swinging fists in one another’s faces. But in what felt like no time I was being wrapped up by two firm arms and taken backstage, and all of it was over. John had me hugged tight to his body, so close that I could smell the amazing scent of his cologne. I sighed; it was nice to know that I was in good hands. After getting me backstage John kicked everyone out of their dressing room and sat me down on the nearest couch. He walked over to the bathroom and wet a paper-towel and began to wipe off the makeup that stained my face, apparently I had been crying when their little scenario took place, I can honestly say that I don’t remember it at all. A weird feeling that I’d never felt took place in the pit of my stomach each time he went to wipe off my face, it was odd, I’d never felt a weird feeling at someone’s touch before.

After getting me cleaned up, John looked at me, his eyes meeting mine, and smiled.
“You alright?” he asked as he took off his jacket and draped it around my shoulders. I nodded my head and thanked him for the jacket. “Ya know, from the moment I heard about that guy I knew that I didn’t like him but after meeting him, I can’t help but to absolutely loathe him.” I nodded and smiled a half smile, still not really sure what to say. “It doesn’t matter anymore though” he said more to himself than to me. Looking up he saw my confused gaze. “I ended it for you” he mumbled. “There was no way that you were staying with such a jerk.” A smile graced my lips and with that John pulled me close. “I wasn’t about to let some idiot mess with you, you’re too amazing for that.” After that, I really was convinced that John Cornelius O’Callaghan was the most perfect guy in the world. How had I become so lucky as to acquire him as a friend?

After spending a little more time in the dressing room talking about things, we headed side-stage to look for the guys, and that’s when the Ella-Pat-Kennedy drama took over. Tonight, had already been, and would still be a long night.
