Did You Get What You Deserve?

Chapter 11

“Alec, can you get that?”

I nodded and ran to open the door. Standing outside was a young man, who looked about 25.

“Can I help you?”

“Does Frank Iero live here?”

I nodded and called over my shoulder.

“Hey! Lazy!”

Dad came up behind me, staring over my head at the man on our doorstep. After a moment he whispered,

“Kevin?”

The man grinned.

“Long time, no see.”

“What brings you here?”

“I was just in the neighbourhood and thought I’d drop by.”

I looked from one to the other.

“Is there something I’m missing here?”

“Oh, this is Kevin. He was a friend of Alec’s. I haven’t seen you in ages, mate, not since...”

He paused.

“Not since Alec’s funeral.”

Kevin sighed.

“Yeah. Well, anyway, who’s this?”

He gestured to me. I glared at him.

“THIS is standing right in front of you.”

He laughed.

“I’m joking. You’re Frank’s daughter, right? Last I saw you, you had just come out of hospital with your mum.”

Linda walked in, curious. Kevin blinked.

“Another daughter?”

I nodded.

“This is Linda.”

As Dad shut the door behind Kevin, Mum came in behind Linda, carrying Julia.

“Oh, hello. I thought I heard voices.”

Kevin smiled.

“Hi Jamie.”

She gasped.

“Kevin?”

He nodded.

“I was in the neighbourhood and I thought I’d pay you a visit.”

Mum set Julia down in her high chair.

“Last time we saw you, you were... how old?”

“About 13 or 14 I think.”

She nodded.

“That sounds about right.”

Kevin sat down at the table. Linda climbed up on the chair next to his and started examining his heavily tattooed arm. He grinned at her.

“Your Daddy has tattoos like these.”

She nodded.

“I know. They dance when he moves his arm.”

He laughed.

“Do they, now? Mine dance too.”

He flexed his arm and the designs twisted and jumped. Linda giggled.

Just then the phone rang.

“I’ll get it.”

I walked over to the phone cradle and picked up the receiver.

“Hello?”

“Hey Alec, it’s James.”

“Hi James.”

I walked down the hallway to my bedroom.

“What’s up?”

“Can I come over? I’ve got hold of some gold dust.”

“Gold dust?”

“Not literally, but... well, you’ll see what I mean. Can I come over now?”

“Sure.”

I hung up and walked back into the kitchen to put the phone on the charger. Kevin was still there, talking to Mum and Dad.

“Hey Dad, James is coming over.”

He nodded.

“Fine.”

Five minutes later, James arrived.

“Let’s go into the study.”

He pulled me in and shut the door before pulling out from under his jersey a DVD case.

“What the- Where did you get that?”

“That’s my secret. Come on, let’s watch it.”

He put the first disk into the computer and we sat down to watch.

When the first image came up on the screen I groaned.

“Such idiots.”

Five minutes later, we were laughing our heads off when the door opened.

“Kevin’s just left, what are you guys- oh no...”

I turned around.

“You guys were such idiots, Dad!”

He sighed.

“You can say that again. Does Mikey know you have this, James?”

“Nope.”

Dad sighed again and sat down beside me.

“Might as well watch.”

Mum stuck her head around the door.

“What’s going on in here?”

“They got hold of Life on the Murder Scene.”

“Ooh, let me watch.”

I giggled.

“Go away. How can we laugh at your antics properly when you’re sitting beside us?”

Dad sighed sadly and stood up.

“Well, we know when we’re not wanted. Come, Jamia, we’ll go make our own fun.”

I laughed.

“Be sure and videotape it so we can laugh at you.”

Dad looked back at me.

“This kind of fun, you don’t want to see.”

I screamed.

“TOO MUCH INFORMATION!”

James pushed my shoulder.

“Stop screaming.”

Dad laughed.

“What, don’t you like the notion that your parents still have sex?”

I screamed louder.

James grabbed me by the shoulders and I thought he was going to shake me until I realised his face was right up close to mine, his lips attached to mine. After a moment he let go.

“That shut you up?”

I looked past him to Dad, who was staring at us with a shocked expression on his face.

“Is this a regular occurrence?”

I laughed and shrugged.

“I guess.”

“For how long?”

“About two months by now.”

“Two months? How come no-one knew?”

“Hey, who said anything about no-one? YOU didn’t know. Mikey does.”

“What?”

“Mikey knows.”

“What, you told him? Or did he walk in on you?”

“More like Dani walked in on us and immediately screamed about it to him.”

“Oh right.”

His face suddenly lit up.

“I’m not sure if I should tell you this, but Mikey and I-”

“Have a bet on, I know. Mikey told us.”

“Oh, right.”

He sighed and closed the door. I grinned at James.

“If I scream, will you kiss me again?”

He laughed.

“You know, you don’t have to ask.”

I giggled and put my arms around him.
