As the curtains closed, I collapsed into James’ arms.

“Please, never make me do that again.”

He laughed.

“Come on, go get out of your costume. You never have to do it again, except tomorrow in assembly.”

I groaned.

“In front of the whole school?”

“Duh.”

“Nooo... I’m sick tomorrow.”

“No yeh aint.”

“Yes I is.”

“No you isn’t.”

As this conversation was taking place, James was steering me to the girls’ dressing room. He pushed me inside and shut the door in my face. I sighed and turned around.

“Well, who’s pleased with herself then? Alecsandra the SLUT, lead role and little boyfriend to boot. He’s a year younger than you, PAEDOPHILE. You’re a slut, you used Scott and got him expelled, and now you’re going around with a boy who’s a year younger than you.”

I swear my temperature rose a few notches. My hair felt like it was crackling with electric anger.

“Don’t take your jealousy out on other people, Laura. Madam Montague, who lets her dislike of other people show on stage and therefore appears a horrible actress. Laura the BITCH, good role and nasty bitchy friends to boot, and STILL she’s not satisfied. At least my boyfriend is EIGHT MONTHS younger than me and not TWO YEARS OLDER like yours. Oh, and who’s the slut? You were going out with Scott until you didn’t get Juliet. You’ve had two boyfriends since then, oh wait, sorry, that should be two AT ONCE. Don’t bitch at people just because they got something you wanted. I could get my Dad to beat you up, only he’s a GENTLEMAN and doesn’t hit girls. Unlike your father, who’s just a general rich asshole. You know what, Laura? You make my skin crawl. Everything about you just makes me sick. You’re a filthy piece of low-life, and no amount of old money is going to change that.”

Laura’s face was a furious red.

“Your dad’s too scared to take on a girl? You even have to run to your dad whenever anyone’s mean to you? ‘Oh, Daddy, she was rude to me! She’s a meany, wah, wah, save me Daddy!’ What, can’t you fight yourself?”

“Of course I can fight. I’m just too polite to pick on a weakli-”

I was cut off by Laura’s fist hitting my face. I gasped and staggered back, slamming into the door. Laura’s face showed a sort of animal pleasure.

“Not such a weakling now, am I?”

The door opened behind me, and I fell to the floor. As pain shot through my head, I saw James’ face above me.

“Alec, your dad’s wai- Alec! What happened?”

I dimly registered that my nose was bleeding. I raised my hand and pointed to Laura- but she wasn’t there. She had gone out the other door, and I knew it was useless to go to Mrs Arbelle no matter how much Laura had hurt me. It was my word against Laura’s, and I knew Laura could lie like nobody else. When it came to my word against hers, I knew she would win.

I sighed.

“I fell.”

“Okay, sit here and put your head back. Anyway, why aren’t you changed?”

“I had a bitch fight with Laura.”

He sighed.

“Can’t you let her go? Be the bigger person.”

I nodded. He caught my head and pushed it back.

“Keep that up. These are your clothes here, right?”

“Yeah. What are you doing? Get outta here so I can get dressed.”

I brought my head back to level and felt a throb of pain through my nose. The whole room spun around, and I vaguely felt my head hitting the bench in front of me.

I woke up in the car. As I wriggled around, trying to get feeling back into my legs, Mum turned around in the front seat.

“You’re awake. Good.”

“What happened?”

“You fainted.”

“Yeah, I know that, but what next?”

“James called us. The school nurse was still there, so she checked you out. She said the blow to the back of your head had, to put it simply, screwed with your inner ear fluid. Then moving your head a lot was just too much for you. She didn’t think you had a concussion, but we should get you to bed early tonight.”

I nodded.

As we pulled into the driveway, Linda woke up beside me. I picked her up and carried her into the house.

“Hey, Linda, did you enjoy the show?”

She nodded sleepily.

“It was pretty.”

I smiled as I laid her down in her bed.

“Sleep well.”

She nodded again, already asleep.
