Let My Heart Rest In Pieces 015

“If you could stick your tongue out and say ‘ah’.”

Rolling my eyes, I did as told, making the ridiculous ‘ah’ing sound that the doctors always wanted. The man, I’d truly forgotten his name already, stuck what seemed like a Popsicle stick down my throat, almost making me gag. He took it out soon, scribbling something on his board while making a noise in his throat.

“Just as I thought, it seems like you’ve got the flu. But there’s nothing to worry about though, it’s just a mild case. However, if you don’t take care of yourself the symptoms may become worse and you’ll have a severe case. I’ll give you a prescription for some medicine, but most of all, I want you to rest and drink lots of fluids.”

And as soon as he came, Mr. What’shisface was gone and I was left alone in the room with my father. I climbed off the exam table and let out a slight cough.

“You better not get me sick,” Dad said as he collected our stuff before we left. I gave him a pout.

“Roxy said the same thing. Are you all going to abandon me because I could possibly infect you?”

“Yes.”

I gasped at the man beside me, swiping at his arm weakly. He turned to me with a large grin on his face. “Aw, come on Envy. You know I’ll always be there for you.”

Smiling, I gave my father a side hug. “Thanks Dad.”

“Not a problem. Now I can use this as black mail so you’ll take care of me when I’m old.”

This was a good way to spend a Wednesday afternoon. Skipping school because of a sickness and lazing around watching The Simpson’s. Feeling another chill pass through my body, I tightened the heavy blanket around me, cuddling into the soft fabric. But at the same time, I kind of wanted my apple juice that was sitting on the table, taunting me.

Sighing, I unwound myself, took a sip, then threw the blanket back on. Someone seriously needed to invent a blanket with arms or something. I was sick of throwing off this blanket. That or I could get someone to feed me… hm.

A knock on my door pushed me out of my thoughts and I glared at the wood. The door was locked, so I couldn’t just tell the person, whoever it was, to come it. Taking in as much air as I could, I tried to yell out to my father, but it came out kind of raspy. Still, the man heard me and went to answer the door.

“Hello boys,” I heard him say and I strained my neck to see who he was talking to. I didn’t have to wait very long before Mikey and Gerard stepped inside. I smiled at them, motioning them over with my covered hand.

Mikey waited until Dad was gone before he blurted out, “You look like shit.”

His brother hit him in the back of the head and glared, which caused me to laugh. Gerard turned to give me an apologetic smile. “Sorry, Michael here isn’t very good with girls. But you just… you don’t look like Envy. Boy, I thought I was pale…”

“Shut up,” I mumbled, “It’s because I’m sick. You guys really shouldn’t be here, I’m contagious.”

“I just came over to drop off your school assignments and Gerard over here wanted to tag along.”

“I got nothing to do,” the older brother said with his usual grin. I could help but smile at the two.

“Thanks for coming to see me guys, but I really think you should leave before you get sick. When I’m better, I’ll call everyone over here and we can chat it up.”

Eventually, they did leave, unwillingly of course, and I was once again left alone.

Looking at the TV, I wasn’t really interested on what was going on.

Come to think of it, this wasn’t a good way to spend a Wednesday afternoon.

“Dad…”

“Yes Envy?”

“This, uh, doesn’t look very appetizing.”

I looked down at the green- I’m not exactly sure what it was. Woah, did something on that plate just move?!

“I looked up in this book that this is what you should eat if you want to get rid of the flu.”

I gave my father a skeptic look. “Are you sure it didn’t say ‘this is what you should eat if you want the flu’?”

Dad just gave me a look. I sent one back. He changed his facial expression. As did I. For about five minutes, we exchanged looks to one another, and the last one he had sent me into a fit of giggles, and after that a coughing fit.

Dad stood there beside me, rubbing my back until I had finally stopped coughing. He set down a class of water and I gave him a grateful smile before gulping down the liquid.

“Thanks,” I got out, my throat raw.

“You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to.”

“I would if I wasn’t sick Dad. You should always try something once before you say you don’t like it.”

Dad grinned. “That’s my girl!”

I laughed softly and excused myself from the table. “I think I’m going to go lie down. I’ll see you in the morning, okay Daddy?”

I saw his face light up. He had always loved it when I called him Daddy. I don’t do that so much now that I’m considered an adult. He was about to reply to my comment when he was interrupted by the door bell ringing.

“Go on ahead up to bed, I’ll get it,” he said, kissing my head and walking out of the kitchen towards the door. I began my decent up the stairs in good spirit.

Half way up, however, I started to feel slightly dizzy and hot. It was quite unusual, seeing as I was always cold. I pressed my hand against the wall to keep myself steady and the other on my forehead to feel the temperature of my skin. The instant my skin touched, it felt burning hot and I could feel the sweat on my face.

It was starting to get really hard to stand, and behind me somewhere, I thought I heard someone calling my name. That seemed to be a signal from my body to shut down, and I fell.

I think that fact that the stairs were covered in carpet helped to make the fall not as painful as it could have been. Also, the fall hadn’t been long because I felt someone catch me as I continued to fall and feel my forehead like I had moments before.

Two male voices talked quickly, and I was soon being carried back down the stairs and through the house. I didn’t really realize where we were going until I felt a cool breeze hit my face. We had gone outside.

I also hadn't realized that I had closed my eyes. When I tried to open them, my world became blurry and I felt sick to my stomach.

“Hold on Envy, we’ll be at the hospital soon,” I heard a familiar voice reassure me, but I couldn’t really place it at the moment.

The same voice continued to speak words to me, but I couldn’t really make them out anymore. I wanted to hold on until we had gotten to the hospital, to make sure that the person with the voice didn’t worry about me, but my body ended up shutting down and I found myself unconscious.
