Letters From Jack

Apartment

Zoey rolled her eyes as she listened to her agent Ryan's voice on the other end of the phone. He was explaining to her that going to the city of Gotham could give her plenty of opportunities in the modeling agency. She wasn't really listening to him as he rolled several names off his tongue. She had caught on to pieces of his conversation, and picked up that somewhere in Gotham lived a millionaire who hosted big parties, and usually showed up with a model on his arm. That's all she really needed to know to lose interest. She wasn't that type of girl. She didn't want someone else to be the reason why she gained popularity.

She snapped her phone shut, and then turned into the city. She smiled as she passed by some of the businesses. It wasn't like she expected. She hadn't saw the city much after her accident. Just a month later her parents decided to move away from Gotham. She licked over her lips as she drove down the street she had once lived on. Her father had phoned her and let her know that he supported her decision in going to Gotham, loved her, and told her an apartment complex was down that street. She was grateful for his information. Who knows how long she would have been wondering around looking for a place to stay if he hadn't phoned.

She parked her vehicle and then grabbed her purse, and opened the door. She walked inside the apartment complex and was greeted by an elderly woman with a pair of glasses.

"What can I do for you young lady?"

Zoey smiled, "I'm interested in an apartment for possibly a month."

The elderly woman frowned, "You have to rent two months, and pay for both months up front to rent here."

Zoey smiled, and then pulled out her check book. Two months was longer than she expected to stay, but she could deal with it. "Two months is fine. Do you accept checks?" She asked.

The woman nodded her head, and Zoey discussed a few details with her. She paid extra for television, and a wireless Internet connection. She really wasn't concerned with the price she had to pay for this apartment. This was going to be her vacation. A present to herself. She had been modeling for three years and had managed to save a good amount of money from doing so. She might not be on the front cover of any magazines yet, but she was making decent money.

After taking care of all the paper work, Zoey walked inside her apartment. She placed the keys down on the counter and inspected the place. It had some furniture in it. Just a small amount, enough to due her though. It also had everything she needed in the kitchen. She would need to go shopping for some plates, forks, and a few pots and pans. She inspected the bedroom and was happy to see it had a queen sized bed sat up, however she made a mental note to buy fresh sheets.

She was happy that this apartment wasn't run down. It was more on the expensive side and had been taken care of. She began packing a few of her bags in and went through them. She sighed, as she placed her clothing into the closet. After everything was placed in it's rightful place she took the memory box out and looked at it yet again. She pulled out a letter she had yet to read, and scanned over it. It was dated earlier than the first one, much earlier. She assumed it was from the beginning of their relationship.

Dear Zoey,

I can't believe you're my girlfriend. Even after three months of dating, I still think it's a dream. You're just so kind, beautiful, smart, funny, and everything I have ever dreamed of finding. I hope you're just as happy in this relationship with me as I am with you.

I also hope you don't believe the rumors about me. I know people have said a lot of things bad about me, and I don't want you to hold them against me. I'm not on drugs. I'm not a drunk like my father. I'm not depressed. I'm not a criminal. I'm just an everyday Joe. You should know that by now.

I may seem kind of repetitive in my letters, but it's just because I always feel the need to tell you how important you are. I've never been one to express myself in writings, especially to someone else, so consider yourself special.

Love always,
Jack Napier

She couldn't help but to smile as she looked down at the letter. She could see the differences in this one from some of the others she had read. Not only was it from the beginning of their relationship, but he wasn't as sure of his feelings in this one. She placed it back in the box, and then picked up the locket. She looked at it, and then walked into the bathroom with it. She looked into the mirror, and placed it around her neck. She latched it and then starred in the mirror. It dangled down perfectly, and she smiled when she saw herself wearing it. She didn't know what was happening to her, but she felt herself becoming whole again.

The Joker paced back and forth in his bedroom as he listened to Harvey Dent talk on the television. He looked over his shoulder and brought his scarred face up into a grin. He didn't know what it was about Gotham's newest playboy, but he defiantly irked him. He hated everything about him, especially how he came onto the scene and assumed he could fix everything that was wrong in the town. Did he not know whose town this was?

He snapped his head towards the door hearing a faint knocking. He could tell by the pressure of the fist against the wood who it was. "Come in, Midnight." He called, and in walked the feisty mouthed blond who was great with bombs. A wicked smile spread across her painted red lips.

"Got some information about the man in black, boss." She said.

"And what would that be?"

"Heard he just busted Falcone's son for drugs in Eastern Gotham."

The Joker smiled wickedly, "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go have some fun with the bat!" He yelled happily, as he picked up his weapon of choice from the table.

Zoey was locking up her front door of the apartment when she heard loud sirens. She hurriedly locked the door, and then scurried over to the window and pulled back the curtains and looked out. Her mouth dropped when she saw four cop cars speeding down the street. She watched as the blue lights faded out of scenery and shook her head. She couldn't help but to wonder if her mom had been right about the crime in the city.

She decided that she would turn into bed early and get some sleep. She wanted to explore the city tomorrow and hopefully find a lead to where Jack Napier could be.
