Chapter 27

Beep!
Beep!

The noise was becoming annoying. It was like my alarm clock except the more I thought about, my alarm clock was a radio. So that meant I wasn't at home. Then where the hell was I?

I groaned and began moving my hands. It was then that I heard a voice.

“Laura are you waking? Come on your mom's worried sick. I don't want to admit it but so am I. Please wake up.”

The voice was Roberts. I began moving more and then I tried opening my eyes. It was so difficult because they felt so heavy.

Finally when I got them open I had to adjust to the light.

“Oh let me get the light. Doctors said it should be dim for when you wake.”

I could hear Robert moving around in the room. I noticed the lighting change and my eyes quickly adjusted. I looked over toward Robert and he was walking toward me.

Suddenly my revelation had to come to the front of my mind. This man was incredibly beautiful but he wasn't mine and he never would be. It was such a hard thing to get use to.

He came to the bed and sat down. My eyes looked around the room and found a hospital room. There was equipment around the top side. I noticed the IV dropper and looked down at my arm. I hated needles so bad so I was thankful I wasn't awake for that. It wouldn't have been a pretty sight at all.

I looked up at Robert and he smiled at me.

“It's good to see you are awake. Your mom has been going crazy with worry. The doctors weren't helping either because they told her that you should have been awake hours ago but the drug you were given before. Well it had your body sleeping more than it should.”

I looked at him and asked, “What day is it?”

He replied, “Saturday at six in the morning.”

I nodded.

“You were brought in Thursday around noon. You were shot in the shoulder. The bullet almost hit a major artery which was the reason for so much blood. They removed the bullet and put you on heavy pain medicine because of the damage.

They said that um you would probably sleep through the biggest pains. They were right about that though.”

Suddenly the door was pushed open. I heard sniffling and heels clicking on the floor.

“Any progress?”

It was my mom. She still had her head down. My guess was because she didn't want to see my condition.

“Molly there has been progress.”

Her head snapped up and her eyes zoomed in on me. She cried out and fast walked toward me. She grabbed me and threw her arms around me. Robert moved out of her way with a grin on his face.

“Mom I understand that you are worried but I cant breathe and you are hurting my shoulder more.”

She quickly moved back, “Oh I am so sorry. I have just been so worried about you. Missing for so long and then I get a call from the police saying that you are in the hospital with a gun shot wound. I was so worried, I had no idea where you were shot. I thought a part of me had died, god I have been such a stupid woman.”

Tears began streaming down her face as sobs raked her body.

“Mom I am fine. Everything is fine right now. I wasn't hurt to badly. I just want to know what happened to Alex, Max, Annie, Blake, and Ben.”

Mom looked over toward Robert and he shrugged. He walked over to my other side. I was confused but I began thinking the worse had happened. Mom looked at me with this sympathy look on her face.

She took the open spot on the bed and took my hands in hers.

“Laura honey some things have happened in the time you have been asleep. According to the girl Annie, Ben hadn't been shot because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. He woke up and he shot her brother Blake and then Alex and Max again.

Max is fine but Alex and Blake aren't Blake's wound was fatal and he died a few hours after he was brought to the hospital. Ben shot Alex in a major artery and he's in a coma. His doctors don't think he will survive but his family is optimistic.”

The tears ran down my cheeks like waterfalls now. Blake was dead!! He helped me and all he got was his life taken away from him. The sobs continued racking my body to the point where I couldn't catch my breath.

I felt a hand on my back rubbing, “Its going to be alright Laura. Alex will pull through because he's your friend. He knows that he has to come back for you no matter what. Your mom and I are still here and we will protect you.”

The sobs slowed and the tears became just drops from my eyes.

“Laura I know it's a lot to process but there is more to the puzzle. Ben wasn't captured. He ran off after shooting up the place. They have had dogs out in the woods around the place you were found but they haven't found anything.”

My fears were confirmed. He would come after my mom and then Robert knowing the effects that it would have on me. I just hope I can forget about him for the time being.

The door suddenly opened and I heard taps on the floor. I looked up and saw one woman I didn't quite expect to see. It was Kimi's mom. She was dressed in lounge clothes with flats on her feet.

Her hair was a mess and her face was tear streaked.

“Well I can see that Laura is awake. Thank god for small miracles.”

She walked closer to me and wrapped her arms around me. That was one thing about Kimi's mom that I loved. She was so caring and I was like her other daughter.

When she pulled back I asked, “Where's Kimi?”

She looked confused and then she looked toward my mom. Mom shook her head and then Kimi's mom sighed.

“Molly can you answer her please? I don't think I can explain it any more.”

She turned around and walked out. The room became deadly quiet. The tears ran down my face down faster than they ever had before. Kimi was my best friend, my sister. I couldn't lose her, I just couldn't The world seemed to be spinning.

“Laura you need to calm down. Your heart monitor is beeping like crazy.”

My mom sounded scared. She knew the impact of all this stress was going to push me over the edge. I felt the other side of the bed dip and an arm come around my shoulders.

“Laura come on now. You are scaring both your mom and me. Shh...”

Robert pulled my head into his chest. The sobs began racking my body and the tears wouldn't slow. Just the idea of something happening to Kimi was enough to make me feel pain.

“Laura please calm down. You need to hear about what happened.”

Robert rubbed my back and patted my head. The sobs slowed but didn't stop and the tears still ran but weren't as bad.

I could hear my mom's voice explaining what happened, “Well basically Kimi was drunk last Saturday and was driving. Her mom didn't understand why she was driving herself since Chris was suppose to be with her. She hit another car, that person was also drunk from the party.

The other person made it out without a scratch. Kimi wasn't so lucky. She had suffered some head injuries and one of her legs received some scratches but otherwise she wasn't hurt more. The doctors say she was lucky but her mom doesn't see it that way.

Some other doctors say she should have woken up by now but she hasn't. Her mom's hoping that if you go see her and talk to her she may wake up. I honestly don't think you should right now because of the stress.”

I buried my face in Robert's chest and inhaled. The smell of tobacco and aftershave. The smell was breathtaking to me. I tried losing myself in his smell. If I could just lose myself in his smell than I could leave everything behind and forget about it.

They noticed that my sobs had quit and my breathing was slowing. The stress was becoming to much. My eye lids became heavy once again and I couldn't fight the feeling. I just let my eyes close and relax in the smell of Robert Pattinson.

***
This time when I woke no one was in the room. The TV was on though. It was playing videos on CMT. I yawned and sat up in the bed. My mind was swarming with so many questions that I couldn't concentrate on anything.

The door suddenly opened and I heard the sound of wheels. This tray was pushed in the room and then this nurse came in.

She smiled at me and replied, “It's good to see you awake. Your mom was worrying all of us. Now she's down the hall worrying other doctors about that Johnson girl. Poor girl but it seems like she will wake soon. I sure hope so.”

She wheeled the tray over to me and the pulled the top off. It didn't look appetizing at all, stupid hospital food.

“Now I am going to let you in on a secret. Your mom and that guy with her have gotten you some other food. Now all I ask is that you eat the fruit and drink plenty of water. You can eat whatever she brings you but the fruit and water will give you some strength.”

There was this huge jug of water sitting beside the tray of food. There was this plastic straw sticking out the top. I placed my lips on the straw and took a sip. The water was good and cold and soothed my aching throat.

The nurse chuckled. “Well I see you love the water. Now do we have a deal about fruit?”

I removed my lips from the straw and looked down at the fruit cup. It was mixed fruit like at school. I nodded my head. It wouldn't be as bad as whatever the other was suppose to be.

“Well that's good to hear. Now I have to go feed the rest of the patients.”

I smiled at her retreating figure as she walked out the door. I picked up the fruit cup and pulled off the paper on top. I picked up my fork and stuck the fork inside. I pulled some fruit back out and popped it in my mouth. I continued eating even after the door came open.

Robert walked in the room holding bags of KFC. I couldn't help but lick my lips. Robert noticed the look on my face and smirked. It was a different smirk than I was use to.

It was like he knew my secret about him and he was teasing me about it. He turned around and began opening the bag. The smell made its way toward me and my mouth began watering.

The door opened again and my mom walked in the room.

“Robert don't tease her with the food.”

She didn't sound to be playing around. She was holding sonic cups though and a grin came over my face. She looked at me and a smile came to her face. She sighed and walked toward me. She sat down on the bed and placed a cup on my tray.

“It's chocolate. The doctors said a milk shake would help your throat. Just make sure you keep drinking the water with it. Also I need to tell you something else.”

The look on her face was like I wasn't going to like what she had to say. The look was something familiar though. It was like it was the same look she gave me at certain times a year.

“Laura I had to call your dad. I had no choice because my lawyer had to be called because of Ben. I had no choice. He and your step mom are in the waiting room. They didn't get here until Wednesday and they don't stay at the hospital. The doctors told him you were awake.”

I grabbed my cup and took a sip of the milk shake. I thought long and hard about the situation. My dad never usually cares about my well being so why now? I didn't want to see him but I knew I would have to. He could come in and see me and say what ever he wanted but I wasn't talking back.

“What about my sister?”

Suddenly the door came open again and in walked my sister. She was older than me of course but that wasn't the reason for my self consciousness. She was beautiful. I mean model pretty but not model skinny.

Today she had on a pair of jeans, a hoodie, and sneakers. She ran toward my bedside and wrapped her arms around me.

“Oh my god. Mom called me and told me about you and I new I just had to come to see you.”

Translation: Mom called and told me what happened and made me come see you. She also told me she was dating a huge celebrity. I just had to come and see what happened to you and also flirt with her man toy.

Yeah my sister used to be so much nicer but after the divorce she left just like dad did. It was like they didn't even care about me or anything. They left me behind to deal with mom and everything else. I know deep in dad's heart that maybe he felt guilt after all the shit happened to me but my sister, I didn't think she did.

A long time ago she buried all her feelings away and never let anyone close. Her and I don't even have the relationship that we use to any more.

She pulled away and walked back. She took a seat next to Robert. He was still shuffling through the bags of food. I watched him suddenly move and turn around toward me. He gave me a grin and walked toward the tray. He moved the bowls of food aside and sat down the the tray of KFC.

I opened the top and saw chicken, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. I grinned and found my fork. I placed the fork in the mac and cheese and took a bite. I didn't care how hot it was, I was practically starving.

Mom and Robert chuckled at my eating. I heard a gag from my sister.

“Sarah please don't do that! Your sister has been held captive for almost five days. She hasn't been fed much so she's hungry.”

My sister just rolled her eyes. I was so sick of her that I wanted to tell her to get the hell out of my room. I hadn't seen her in months and she was already acting like a bitch.

I met her gaze and she glared at me. Sarah was use to all the attention since she was the oldest and the first to leave home. Hell I remember mom calling her to check up on her every week after she moved out the first time. She was only on the other side of town and she still got all the attention.

I never really cared about people's attention. I got enough attention from Kimi for a lifetime. I continued eating trying to blink the tears from eyes.

Mom must have noticed my discomfort.

“Sarah let's talk outside, now.”

Mom stood to her feet and walked over toward Sarah. Sarah wasn't moving at all so mom grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the room. I continued eating my food. I heard some movement and found Robert moving a chair next to me.

He caught my gaze and gave me a grin. I smiled and blushed. I looked down at my food.

“Oh did I make Laura, the lady of the hour, blush?”

I couldn't take the grin off my face but the blush was darkening.

“Oh shut up. You only have that power because of that movie and you know it.”

“Yeah I know and its most fun to use it against you.”

I looked up at him to see him sitting down in the chair. He placed his bowl of food on the bed by my legs. I crossed my legs to give him more room. He looked up and gave me a smile and then suddenly he took my hand.

“Laura you know I was just trying to cheer you up. I am not your families biggest fan right now. So I don't mean you any disrespect at the moment.”

His thumb was rubbing across the top of my hand.

“Robert...,” I whispered.

I didn't want him doing something stupid when anyone could walk in the door. At the sound of my voice he dropped my hand and gave me a smile.

I couldn't help but want to kick myself. He might have kissed me but now I will never know. The door was pushed open and mom came back in.

“Sarah being whinny again?”

She whirled around and gave me a look. The look was 'you have to ask?' I just huffed and continued eating.

***
It was Sunday now and my dad hadn't even come in to see me. I heard that he found out I was alright and is making plans to head back out.

I was playing gold fish with Robert. Mom was busy at home. She hadn't been there much, just to change and check the house. She was trying to clean some and said she wouldn't be gone long.

“Do you have any threes?” I asked him.

He huffed for the hundredth time and handed over the cards. I laughed at the look on his face. I was creaming him in this and he said he wanted to play.

“I can't believe I am getting beaten by a seventeen year old.”

I grinned, showing off my pearly whites. I grabbed the cards and placed them together, I now have more sets than he does.

“Okay now since your mom isn't here, can I ask you something?”

I suddenly looked up. His tone was nervous. His expression was unsure.

“Sure ask away.”

I picked up my cards and looked them over.

“Well I hate to ask but why do you hate your dad and sister so much?”

I sighed. I did tell him to ask, I was just hoping he wasn't asking something like that.

“Well its difficult to place. I guess my sister and I changed after she moved out. Our parents were still together at the time so she didn't move far. That was when my parents began arguing more. Mom got the job she has now during that time and it put a lot of strain on the relationship.

I suppose my parents pride and joy was always Sarah. She got all the attention because she was used to it. I just faded into the back ground. I was fourteen when they sat me down one weekend and said it was over. My dad moved out the beginning of the week and he began distancing himself from mom and I.

It wasn't fair that he took out on me what my mom done. He hasn't been around much since he remarried. Don't get me wrong he wasn't around much more before but afterward he wasn't around at all. He doesn't even send gifts for holidays or birthdays but I am over it now.

My sister is used to all the attention. She is a model now so she thinks she's the most beautiful woman to ever walk the earth. She was glaring at me earlier, I suppose because you were giving me more attention than her.”

I looked down at my hands.

“I am sorry I shouldn't have asked. Well do you have any aces?”

I couldn't help but laugh. I threw the last three card in my hands at him. He chuckled and looked at all of them.

“Well I think it is safe to say that I got schooled by a seventeen year old girl.”

He grinned and began picking up the cards. He placed the deck in a Ziploc bag and pressed the seal removing the air inside. The door suddenly pushed open and I heard footsteps.

This young guy walked in the room holding a clipboard in his hands.

“Well Ms. May you seem to be doing good so far. I think the shoulder has healed quicker than expected. You should still be on the pain medication but I am taking you off the IV drip.”

He walked closer toward me and Robert backed up toward the side. Stuff like this was difficult because he couldn't risk being noticed. I saw out the corner of my eyes he pulled on a pair of shades on his face. He began shuffling with his hat that he always wore out in public.

The doctor walked closer toward me. He sat down the clipboard and removed the stethoscope from his neck.

“Just relax and take deep breaths when I tell you.”

I nodded my head. He placed the instrument on my chest and I breathed normally. When he got to my back he asked for “Deep Breaths.”

I did what he said and then he pulled back.

“Ms. May does your nose fill clogged at all?”

I began breathing through my nose. It did feel clogged so I nodded my head.

“Alright well I will make sure the nurse gives you some medicine for the cold you seem to be getting.”

He smiled at me and then began walking toward the door.

“Also a nurse should be in here shorty to remove the IV from your arm.”

I nodded my head toward him as he continued walking out the door. I looked back toward Robert and saw him pulling out his phone. He must have felt my stares because he looked up.

“I need to call your mom and tell her the progress.”

I cringed.

“Do you think you could stay in here until after the nurse removes the needle?”

He grinned. His expression was strange.

“Sure I will stay if you want.”

“Thanks, I hate needles. I don't know if it will hurt coming out but I need you to distract me. I will pass out if I stare at her while she's doing that.”

He chuckled and sat down in the bed next to me.

“I will be right here I promise you that.”

I smiled at him and held his hand. The door came open and the nurse from earlier came in the room. She smiled toward me.

“Awe are the two of you sweet!! Mom's boyfriend helping out with the daughter.”

She squealed. She seemed to really think it was sweet. She walked over toward me and began looking at the drip.

“Well I am in here to remove your drip. It wont hurt, at least I try not to make it hurt.”

She found a box of gloves and began pulling them up her hands. Robert tighten his grip on my hand as she got closer.

“You must hate needles huh?”

I was embarrassed to tell the truth but I did it anyway.

“Well I fainted before when a nurse took my blood because no one was distracting me. I just need him here so I don't faint again.”

Robert chuckled but the nurse didn't say anything. She began moving the covers around and she picked my arm up. She placed it straight and that was when Robert got my attention. He pulled on my arm making me look at his face.

Just his staring was enough to keep my mind occupied. His blue eyes were something out of a novel. I mean they look so blue, bluer than the oceans. I was getting lost in just the texture of his eyes. I did notice that his gaze never left mine. He held a tight and firm grip on my hand as well.

My eyes began moving though. Over his face taking in the actual texture and the shapes. The small imperfections on his face were beautiful on him. It was hard to take my gaze away. When I heard him trying to bring me back it was hard for me to get out of my perfect world. His voice though was the perfect cure to my daydreaming.

I snapped out and looked back at him. He was smiling.

“You did good she's all done with your arm. Now I need to call your mom before she calls and chews me out.”

He stood to his feet pulling out his cell. He walked toward the door and was out before I could protest. I had forgotten all about the nurse still being in the room.

“Such a shame.”

I jumped at the sound of her voice. I met her gaze and she was looking at me with this look. It was obvious I had slipped about my true feelings.

“I wont say anything but you should either confront it or bury it. My opinion you should tell him. He acts like he might feel the same way but I am just a nurse not a therapist so what do I know.”

She began moving around the bed. I could tell she was trying to get everything for the IV on the stand.

“Um I just want to ask something.”

“Ask.”

“Well do you think it would be possible to get out of this bed in a wheelchair?”

I looked sheepish and I knew it.

“So you can go see your friends?”

I just nodded my head.

“I will get you a wheelchair. I will take you because I have a feeling that he's going to try to stop you.”

I nodded my head. She grabbed the rest of the equipment and walked out.
