Chapter 43

November 23, 2009

My grandmother's house was small. It wasn't much smaller than my house but you could tell the difference. She only had three bedrooms, which meant her living room was full of air mattresses and blankets.

Aunt Karen and her husband, my uncle, Jack, slept in the living room while the little kids got a room and Rachel and I got another room. My grandmother's kitchen and dining room were connected into one room.

Its three days before Thanksgiving, the day mom and Robert are supposed to show up. Aunt Karen has no idea who she's dating at the moment. Rachel actually seems to like the Twilight craze as well, she's not as bad as Kimi and I but she does like them. Boy is she in for a big surprise.

Last night Rachel kept me up because she was on her phone talking to someone. I brought my hand to my mouth catching the yawn as it came from my mouth. I was walking down the stairs still in my pajamas. It was seven forty five in the morning, the younger kids love to wake everyone up at the crack of dawn.

I could hear voices from the living room and shuffling. I walked around the stairs my eyes still very droopy. Aunt Karen was folding up blankets and Uncle Jack was putting up the air mattress.

Aunt Karen turned her head toward me and gave me a guilty smile, “Sorry about the kids. They wake up everyone. I can assume that Rachel kept you up as well? That girl and that damn phone are a huge problem. We are going to take the kids into town and get them some breakfast. That way if you want you can go back to bed honey.”

I smiled a sleepy smile, “I'll try but since I'm up I've done got hungry.”

She chuckled, “Yeah I kind of figured that. Mom is in the kitchen cooking some breakfast. I think she's cooking yours as well.”

I smile and look around the room and found Daphne sitting on the couch playing with a hair brush. I walk past her and rub her head hearing a giggle from her mouth. I yawn again as I walk into the kitchen hearing pans clunking against each other.

I find my grandmother standing in front of the stove cooking. She's dressed in a yellow robe with a pair of white house shoes on her feet. Her gray hair is up in all directions telling about the restless sleep she got last night.

I walked further into the room and her head turns. She grins at me but then her eyes take in my appearance. It's the second night that my sleep has been disturbed between Rachel and her siblings, the rings under my eyes are a new part of my complexion.

“Rachel and the kids?”

I give her a sarcastic smile, “Do really have to ask?”

She sighs and returns to the stove, “I have some waffles, eggs, and sausage here if you want any.”

At the mention of food my stomach growls.

“Well I guess that would be a hell yes I want some of that food.”

Grandma laughs and helps me fix my own plate. I take a seat at the big wooden table hearing running footsteps all over the house. I could just imagine mom's voice yelling about all the noise. I can assume that mom and Robert will be staying in a hotel for their stay.

Karen comes into the kitchen.

“Mom we are taking the kids out for breakfast. We need to go to the store to get some groceries for the food to cook. Are you going to start some of the food today?”

Grandma has taken a seat next to me at the table, “I was going to start on some of the deserts, and there are still quite a few that I need to fix.”

Karen nods her head and comes wrapping her arms around grandma's neck. Grandma rubs her hands and then Karen smiles at me.

“Well we should be back at least by eleven. Jack might bring back the kids sooner around maybe ten o'clock.”

Grandma nods her head and then Karen walks out of the kitchen back toward her family. I start cutting my food and placing each bite in my mouth. I look up and find grandma looking at me with this look.

“So Laura how is my favorite granddaughter?”

I smile but shrug, “Nothing much Momaw.Same old, same old.”

She smiles, “Have you told your mom about the college thing yet?”

I frown and lower my head, “Of course not Momaw. I think it's too early to say anything. I mean nothing's set in stone at the moment. I don't want to think about that right now. She might not even care.”

The smile on her face drops, “Laura you are her youngest child, she will care.”

It's safe to say I haven't told grandma everything. Like the fact mom stays gone from two to six months at a time. She comes home and still makes me fend for myself. When mom first started leaving I didn't even know how to cook a lot of things. I had to call and ask family how to cook stuff, it was embarrassing.

“Momaw you don't know her. She's changed, she doesn't care. She took that job when I turned fifteen and she hasn't been around in my life since then. If she cared she would ask about my schooling or invite me to dinner and not invite her work buddies along with us. She doesn't care.”

Momaw sighs, “Has she done this? You haven't said anything honey how was I supposed to know about this. She really does need a wakeup call though.”

Suddenly I heard footsteps coming toward the kitchen. Aunt Karen walked into the kitchen again but this time the expression on her face was murderous.

“Laura? Molly's been doing this to you?”

I lowered my head, I had thought she was gone by now. Karen and mom weren't getting along because of the way mom was treating me.

All I could do was nod my head.

“Don't worry Laura I'll give her that damn wakeup call she needs. She definitely won't like it but that's too bad.”

Karen then stomped out of the kitchen yelling behind her, “If Molly gets here before I get back, call me!”

The door was opened and everyone was out of the house. I could feel my stomach trying to mess up at the idea of an argument between them two. This wasn't going to be such a relaxing vacation like I thought.

“Finish your food honey. You can go back to bed since Rachel and the little ones kept you up.”

I shook my head, “What about you Momaw?”

She smiled, “I'll be fine. I just need to straighten up some while they are gone. Your mom will probably be here after lunch knowing her. I'll wake you when she gets here.”

I smiled and finished my food. I grabbed both our plates placing them in the sink. I ran water over the plates getting all the stuff off the plates making it easier for Momaw to wash them. I turned on my heel and walked out the kitchen back toward the stairs.

I walk back in the tightly cramped room; Rachel's bed is a twin size air mattress on the floor. My bed was a twin size but it was a regular bed. I shut the door and walked over to my bed climbing back under the covers. Pulling out my cell phone I set an alarm for eleven o'clock. I grabbed my iPod and turned on the music to shuffle and scooted down in the bed closing my eyes welcoming sleep.

***

I was woken up by the alarm on my phone. It was louder than my music which was perfect to wake me. I stretched my arms above my head tossing the covers off my body. I pulled the earphones from my ears hearing commotion from downstairs.

My eyebrows knitted in confusion, was aunt Karen and the kids back already?

I stood from my bed and then grabbed my phone hiding it from everyone under the mattress. I walked out of the room then down the hall. I could hear multiple voices none of which I could hear very clearly. I walked down the stairs listening in when I could finally hear everything clearly.

“Well it's good to finally see you. Karen and Jack just dropped off the kids. They should be back shortly.”

“Where's Laura?”

“Oh she's in the bed, Rachel kept her up most of the night and then at seven this morning the kids woke her. I told her to go back to bed, she looked exhausted.”

“She should be used to the lack of sleep with school. She should have helped you clean and with these kids, that girl has no responsibility in her brain.”

I rolled my eyes at the sound of my mother's comment. Robert was the only one that seemed worried about me. I could suddenly hear footsteps toward the stairs.

“I'll go wake her then.”

“Robert leave her be. If she wants to sleep it won't be any hair off my head.”

Momaw spoke of then, “Go ahead Robert. I told her I would wake her when you got back.”

Suddenly I decided to walk further back toward the room I was in.

“She's in the last room on the right!”

I could hear noise on the stairs as Robert was walking up them. I stood in front of the door waiting for when he came into my vision. Suddenly a shadow came across the dimly lit hall way. Robert's face suddenly filled my vision and a huge smile came across my lips.

He pulled me to his chest wrapping his arms around my torso.

“I missed you so much Laura.” he had to whisper in case mom or someone else heard us. I could feel all my worries about him just fade away with his confession.

“I missed you too Robert.”

He pulled away and I saw his eyes flicker toward the stairs. When he saw the coast was clear his lips were on mine in an instant. The feel of his lips on mine just brought back all the memories of us. I missed this; I missed just being around him.

He pulled away all too soon. He was grinning showing his perfect pearly white teeth.

Of course all good times have to come to an end.

“Robert, hurry up please! I want to introduce you to everyone! The kids are waking up!”

Robert sighed, “Come on before she comes up here.”

I groaned but nodded walking behind him. I wanted to hold his hand but that wouldn't be possible right now. Robert walked downstairs first and I trailed behind him looking around. All the younger kids including Daphne, Phil, and Sam were all lying around on the couches taking their naps I suppose. Sam was the only one waking up at the moment.

I walked down the rest of the stairs and my eyes connected with Momaw's. She was smiling at me and her eyes were moving between Robert and me. I tried not to give anything away but Momaw could read me like an open book somehow.

“Well finally she awakes. You should have helped grandma, she needed the help.”

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, “Mom I had no sleep, maybe about two hours total.”

Mom did roll her eyes, “Yeah well I've had to sleep on an airplane and only got an hour sleep because of the noise around me. Then I had to stay up until midnight because of the celebrity I was working for. My entire life has been altered so don't give me shit about not getting enough sleep.”

“Mom whether you like it or not that's your decision. You could always quit, you have enough money to afford whatever you want that's your damn fault.”

“Okay now let's not argue around the kids!”

I was so lucky Momaw was there, I would have said something I regretted.

Mom turned on her heel walking toward the kitchen, Robert following after her. I sighed; this holiday was going to be the worst in the world.

“Karen is on her way. She's in a bad mood as well, Rachel didn't stay and she does not want to come back because of Molly.”

I groaned and found a seat on the couch next to Sam. He was rubbing sleep from his eyes.

“Hey cousin, Robin.”

I smiled; Sam was the only one that really called me Robin. My friends could call me that but not nearly as often. Sam loved the name Robin because of Batman and Robin.

“Hey Sam how are you doing?”

He shrugged his shoulders, “I'm fine. Your mom seems...”

I groan, “Yeah I know. I would suggest waking the younger ones up. We should get them away from here when your mom shows up, that won't be a pretty sight at all.”

Sam sighed, “They aren't in the best mood when you wake them.”

“Who is?” I said sarcastically.

I stand to my feet and walk over to where Daphne was sleeping the couch. She had a teddy bear tucked under her arms with her thumb in her mouth. She looked so peaceful as she slept.

I looked over at Sam, “Can you carry Phil?

Sam nods his head, “Yeah, he's not that heavy.”

“Let's try to keep them asleep and carry them to their room. That way they can stay asleep until after everything blows over.”

Sam nods his head and moves toward Phil. I look back at Daphne and bend down trying to figure out how to pick her up.

“All you have to do is wake her a little bit. She'll move to your arms if you hold her right.”

I sigh and move her arms around, she stirs.

“Daphne, get in my arms.”

She opens her eyes and smiles at me. She moves toward my arms pulling her thumb from her mouth and holding her bear tightly to her chest. She wraps her arms around my neck and I make sure her grips tight enough before I stand to my feet.

“Sam, go ahead and take Phil upstairs. I need to let Momaw know what I'm doing.”

Sam sighs as he nods walking up the stairs. Daphne's grip is still firm as I walk over to the kitchen. I can hear heated whispers as I step into the room.

“Momaw?” I whisper.

Everyone, including mom, Robert, and Momaw turn their heads to look at me. Robert's face has brightened upon seeing me holding baby Daphne.

“Yes honey?”

“Sam and I are putting the little ones in the room. That way everyone doesn't have to whisper around them.”

She smiles understanding the real reason for moving them. I can hear Daphne trying to move and she groans in her sleep.

Robert walks toward me and smiles at Daphne. Daphne's peeking through half asleep eyes and Robert turns his head toward her eyes. I can feel Daphne moving closer to me like she's scared.

“V-vampire!”

I busted out laughing not able to keep it in. Even Momaw’s laughing; mom's eyes have widened making it look like her eyes are bugging out of her head.

Robert starting chuckling, “Well she knows who I am at least.”

“Okay Daphne I'll get you away from the big mean vampire.”

She had tucked her face in my chest and I turned on my foot. I got to the stairs and started walking up them toward the room they were staying in.

“Rachy's right, he's cute.”

I smiled and chuckled. She yawned as we made it to the room. Sam was tucking Phil into bed his eyes shut tightly.

“Sammy?”

Daphne was calling her brother. Sam jumped since he hadn't noticed us walking in.

“She's awake?”

I shrugged.

“Yes Daphne?”

She moved her head from my chest, “There's a vampire from that movie mommy and Rachy watch. Rachy's right he's not scary like I thought, he's cute.”

Sam's eyebrows knitted together in confusion.

“Don't worry Sam you can meet him in a minute.”

Sam nodded his head while I walked over to Daphne's bed. I lowered Daphne into the bed and her eyes were becoming droopy once again. She lay on the bed holding her bear close to her and her thumb back in her mouth. I pulled the covers over her and kissed her forehead.

“Night cousiy!”

“Night Daphne!”

I stood up and turned out the overhead light as I made my way to the door. I closed the door behind me and walked down the hall with Sam on my tail.

“So who's Daphne talking about?”

“You didn't see who my mom was with?”

He shook his head, “No, I was awakened by their voices and the noise as they came in. I was trying to get sleep out of my eyes so I didn't.”

I sighed, “Well let's go meet him then.”

We walked down the hall and downstairs. I could hear noise outside telling me than Karen, Jack, and Rachel were back. I internally cringed at the idea of an argument coming between Karen and mom.

Sam followed me toward the kitchen; I didn't want to be in the same room when Karen walked through that door. I could hear mom whispering with Robert heatedly. I stepped in the room and saw Momaw with a frown on her face; she could hear Karen outside as well.

“Mom?” I asked.

Her head whipped toward me and she gave me a glare.

“I thought you would want to introduce Robert to Sam yourself.”

She huffed but straightened her clothes plastering a fake smile on her face and grabbed Robert's hand. Sam stepped around me and I could see the surprise on his face.

“Sam, honey, this is my boyfriend, Robert Pattinson.”

Sam's mouth was hanging open and I heard Momaw’s giggle.

“I've seen your face on my sister's wall. She's obsessed with you.”

I cringed, great; Rachel would be all fan girl on him as soon as she sees this face.

“Anyway nice to meet you Robert. My names Samuel Crow, Molly's nephew.”

I smiled at Sam, he was well behaved; Karen raised him well. Suddenly the front door opened and I heard Rachel's voice.

“Mom I don't want to be here. Let me go to the room, I don't want to be around her.”

“Rachel Kylie Crow, you will not be ignoring your aunt. If she starts ignoring you then by all means escape to the room but not until then! You were raised better than that!”

I heard Rachel's voice and her footsteps coming toward the kitchen. I jumped up and made my way to the entrance of the kitchen before she could come in. Sam was hot on my trail as we stopped her outside the kitchen.

“Rachel before you go in there I would calm down.” I said.

“Sis, I would also suggest you straighten your clothes as well as your hair.”

I couldn't help but giggle as she started looking at Sam confused, “Sam why would I need to straighten my clothes and hair. It's just grandma's kitchen.”

Rachel pushed past us, “Tried to warn you!”

We walked in the kitchen to see Rachel staring at Robert with wide eyes as she was like a statue in the middle of the kitchen. Sam started laughing and patted Rachel on the back, she didn't even flinch.

“You'll listen to your brother next time!”

I walked over to Rachel and put my arm around her neck, “Rachel this is my mom's boyfriend, as you know he's Robert Pattinson from twilight.”

She snapped out of her position and looked at Robert, “Nice to meet you.” She squeaked.

“Rachel, do you want an autograph?” asked Robert. My head snapped toward him but he was looking at Rachel.

Rachel's head was nodding up and down.

“I'll be right back!”

She ran from the kitchen toward the stairs quickly. I couldn't help but chuckle.

“What's all the commotion about in here?”

Karen looked around and suddenly her eyes widened at Robert.

“Oh my. I can see why Rachel ran from here toward her room. She's obsessed with that movie. I thought Laura was to, mom mentioned before.”

Mom's head snapped toward Karen, “No she isn't. She didn't act like that when she met Robert.”

Suddenly I saw a change in Karen. I looked at Sam and motioned my head toward the living room.

“Okay kids let's go in the living room for a moment and let Molly and Karen talk.” Momaw's first priority was us kids; we were all she cared about.

Sam walked out of the kitchen first and Momaw walked behind me as we all walked out. Rachel was running back downstairs with this huge grin on her face. I stood in front of her stopping her from walking in there.

“I wouldn't go in there right now.”

She stopped immediately, “What’s wrong?”

Before I could answer I heard the voices.

“YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR OWN DAUGHTER! SHE LOVES THAT DAMN MOVIE WITH ALL HER HEART! MAYBE IF YOU WERE AROUND MORE OFTEN THAN YOU WOULD KNOW SOMETHING!”

“DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO KAREN! I'M OLDER THAN YOU AND YOU CAN'T TALK LIKE THIS TO ME! SHE'S MY DAUGHTER, SHE'S GROWN SO IT'S NOT LIKE SHE'S FOUR ON HER OR SOME S**T! SO GET THE F**K OFF MY BECK ABOUT IT!”

“MOLLY WHEN SHE GETS OLDER YOU ARE GOING TO REALIZE WHAT YOU LOST! I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF SHE NEVER WANTED TO SEE YOU AGAIN ONCE SHE LEAVES YOUR F***ING HOUSE! SHE CAN'T STAND YOU’RE A**! IT'S TO THE POINT SHE HATES WHEN YOU COME HOME, SHE PRAYS FOR SCHOOL EVERY DAY! SHE F*****G HATES YOUR DAMN A**! RIGHT NOW I HATE YOU TOO! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE MY SISTER!”

“OH DON'T ACT LIKE YOU ARE SOME SAINT KAREN! RACHEL'S NOT EVEN JACK'S KID IS SHE? RACHEL DOESN'T EVEN KNOW SHE ISN'T! YOU'VE BEEN WITH JACK SINCE YOU HAD SAM, HIS OWN KID! DON'T F**K WITH ME KAREN!! I WILL RUIN EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, TRUST ME! YOU NEED TO BACK THE F**K OFF!!”

Suddenly I heard footsteps coming from the kitchen. Mom was running toward the front door with Robert following right behind her. His eyes connected with mine and I just knew they weren't coming back for a while.

I looked back at Momaw and her face held sadness and anger. I looked over at Sam and Rachel. Rachel had this sad, shocked expression on her face and Sam was trying to comfort her best he could. Karen came from the kitchen and looked at her children. Rachel's face changed and I heard a strangled cry from her mouth and she ran through the front door.

Tears were filling my own eyes and I just couldn't deal with it all. I heard cries from behind me and saw Phil and Daphne on the stairs. Karen ran over toward us taking her kids in her arms.

I turned around ignoring Momaw grabbing for me and ran toward the room I was staying in.
