Happy Birthday

I think I'm special.

She frowns, glancing at the blue and pink birthday cake with sixteen candles.

She doesn't feel different. Is she supposed to feel different?

“Happy birthday, sweety.”

It doesn't feel like it's her birthday. It doesn't even feel like a special event. She doesn't feel anything.

Am I supposed to feel something? And that's what she wonders. For her thirteenth birthday, she didn't feel anything special. She didn't feel any different.

“Blow out the candles and make a wish,” her mother tells her, placing her hands on the birthday girl's shoulders. And so, she does just that. She closes her eyes and blows out the candles, completely forgetting to make a wish.

Like it would come true, anyway.

So, I was in the middle of trying to come up with the first chapter to my 'to be' story. This came out. I hope you enjoy.
