That's Where You Take Me

Late Night Phone Calls

Frankee shook her head as they watched Gena and Kimberly walk away.

“Holy shit, obsessive much?” Rowan asked. The others just laughed.

“You know, I’m actually suddenly thankful that Ashley and I split amicably. It…”

“Came in handy?” Median asked her fiancé. He nodded. “She seemed nice.”

“Yeah, I wander if she’s still with Chris.” Jimmy said.

“Who knows. So, what’s the plan?” Alex asked. The girls all looked at one another and grinned.

----

That night Median lay beside Brian staring at the ceiling. She sighed as she curled into him, as he wrapped his arms around her.

“I love you.” Brian told her causing her to smile into the darkness that surrounded them.

“I love you too, even after the idiotic comments you made today.”

“What idiotic comments?” he asked grinning against her shoulder as he placed a kiss on the exposed skin, beside the strap of her tank top.

“The ones you made while we were at the mall, right before we stopped in Victoria’s Secret, because Frankee couldn’t live without stopping there.”

“Oh, those idiotic comments.” She felt his grin and shook her head. She turned easily in his arms and looked at him.

“I’m glad we fixed things.” He was shocked, because that wasn’t what he was expecting her to say.

“So am I.”

“And I’m glad that Rowan and Matt and all the others are happy. And I’m really glad that I moved to Long Beach and met Lacey, because if I hadn’t, I would’ve never met you.” And before he could respond she kissed him.

----

Median woke in the middle of the night with the phone going off beside the bed. She stretched reaching for it before it woke Brian. When she picked it up she hit the talk button and closed her eyes as she spoke.

“Hello?”

“Median Montgomery?”

“This is her…”

“This is Chief Nathan Gibson from…”

“Nate, why the hell are you calling me all the way from Tarrant? If one of my brothers is in trouble call my parents.”

“Median, there was an accident out at the farm.” She sat up in bed immediately.

“What kind of accident.”

“There was a fire. Your parents were having a family dinner for Aslyn’s third birthday.”

“Oh god… oh god… who… who’s dead?”

“I’m sorry Median, but all of them. Except the kid. She managed to get out of the house.”

“No… this can’t be happening.” Brian shifted in the bed beside her as he woke up.

“Median?” He said as he opened his eyes.

“What’s going to happen to her Nate?”

“Since the rest of your family died in the fire, or because of it, you’re her legal guardian.”

“Jesus, shit, I’m not… okay, look can you keep her for a few days. Give me some time to figure this out down here? I…I need to let it sink in.”

“You’ve got a week, I told Child Protective Services it could take a day or two to get a hold of you.”

“Thanks Nate.” And she hung up the phone, and Brian noticed the tears instantly.

“Babe, what’s wrong? What happened?”

“My parents, brothers, sister in law, grandparents, they’re dead.”

“How? When?”

“Fire, at the farm. Aslyn, my niece, she’s the only survivor…oh god, I’m her legal…”

“You’re all she has left Median.” Brian said quietly. “It’s your decision.”

“You’d do that, let me bring her here? You don’t know her all that well.”

“She’s your only family. You’re all she has. She’s just a baby really, she didn’t deserve to loose her family.”

“Okay, you’re right.” Median said and Brian moved from the bed and pulled on a pair of jeans before walking from the room and down the stairs to the den. She dressed and followed him.

----

Zack was a little nervous, but they were telling his parents that they were engaged. He didn’t know why he was nervous, they loved Frankee. She grinned at him as he pulled into the drive way and his phone went off as they were walking into the house. He glanced down at it, saw that it was Brian and answered the phone.

“Hello?” He asked as he hugged his Mom.

“Me and Median are going to Montana for a few days, we need a favor.”

“What? And why are you two going there?”

“Her parents died, her brothers, sister in law, and her grandparents. She’s her three year old nieces legal guardian.”

“Well shit! What do you need?”

“I need you to get the gang together. The kids gonna need a room at the house. You think all of you can throw it together in three days?”

“Yeah, I can even get a few extra hands. I’m sure my parents, yours, Matt’s, Coby and Casey, Alex and Michelle, and quiet possibly Frankee’s mom will help. I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks, we owe you guys big time.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Zack said and hung up the phone.

“What was that about?” Frankee asked.

“Brian and Median have a favor. They need us to throw together a room for a three year old. Her niece is going to be living with them.”

“What happened?”

“I’d rather tell everyone at once Mom.” Zack said and glanced at Frankee.

“So much for this being a good day to break the news.” She muttered.

“Break the news?” James asked.

“We came over to tell you, that we’re getting married.” Zack said and his Mom’s eyes widened and a moment later she was pulling him and Frankee into a hug.

“Congratulations Son.” James said and he too hugged them both.

“Okay, I’m assuming, they want this done soon, so instead of discussing where we’re going to celebrate this, we’re going over to Brian’s. I’ll call Camdyn and Suzy, we’re the best bet for outfitting a child’s room.”

“Don’t go over board mother.” Zack said groaning.

“Oh shut up and you and Frankee, go to the paint store and get the paint.”

“What color?”

“Something pastel, get a couple of colors, I have an idea.” And with that she grabbed her keys and cell phone and was out the door.

“I guess I’ll call everyone on our way to the paint store.” Frankee muttered.

“I’ll call Brian and Matt’s Dad’s and we’ll get the others together and start moving stuff out of one of the spare rooms.” James said grabbing his keys and cell phone as well.

“We’ll all meet up at Brian’s in a couple of hours. Well everyone minus Mom, Camdyn, and Suzy.” Zack muttered.

“They may be awhile.” James said laughing. Frankee only shook her head.
