If My Heart Was A Compass Then You Would Be North
I wasn’t sure how long I spent in the bathroom really or how many times I had thrown up, or when I was passed out or when I was awake. But I knew for certain that Nate had not left my side the entire time. He hadn’t left once for anything, and had held my hair back when my head was hanging over the toilet bowl, talking to me when I was awake, telling me I was going to be okay whether I could comprehend or not, and grabbing my phone when I tried to make drunk phone calls.

I woke up to find him passed out next to me on my bed. He had his arm around me and my body was molded to the shape of his as I slept on his chest. What the hell? How had we ended up like this? But I realized something. It wasn’t awkward at all. It felt oddly familiar, like this was where I was meant to be. I placed my head on his chest again, but the movement woke him.

He stirred and woke, smiling down at me. “Hey,” he said, keeping his hand around me. “How are you feeling?”

I groaned. “My head hurts.”

He laughed and reached over to grab a blue Powerade bottle and gave it to me. “I anticipated that, but unfortunately for you, alcohol and medicine do not mix.”

I took a sip and lied back down on his chest. He wrapped his arm around me. “So how did we get in?”

“I called your sister to open the door, and then I called my mom and said I was sleeping here,” he shrugged.

I laughed. “And of course she had no problem with that.”

“I think I’ve slept here more than my own house,” he smirked.

“So… how bad was last night?”

“Well that depends, do you want the lie or the truth?”

“The lie, definitely,” I cringed. I only remembered bits and pieces of the whole night, but what I did remember was not pretty.

“You did nothing stupid and there were no fights,” he recited. “It was a fun night.”

“Oh God, okay tell me the truth now.”

“Well basically you punched Stacie in the face and that’s when the alcohol kicked in,” he sighed. “You told me to never let you drink again and then you started dancing with everyone.”

“Oh my God, did I hook up with anyone?” I groaned, covering my face. I wasn’t supposed to be that girl, the one who got so drunk that she looked ridiculous. I made fun of girls like that. And now I was one.

“No you actually didn’t,” he assured her. “I made sure you didn’t.”

“You’re too good to me,” I sighed. “So does everyone find me a complete joke now? God, they must hate me.”

“Actually no,” he smirked.

“Really?” I asked, surprised.

“Josh thinks you’re the coolest girl he’s ever met,” he chuckled.

I didn’t know how, but I knew he was hiding something from me. It must have been because I had known him so well for so long, but he was lying to me. I just couldn’t tell about what. He never kept anything from me, nothing. And I never kept anything from him. We were one in the same.

“Anyway,” he said, letting go of me and getting out of bed. “I actually have to go. Frank wants to meet up at the JCC to play some ball, and I’m pretty sure he wants me to be his wingman. Some chick from New York is here, and he’s trying to impress her.”

“Oh God, another one?” I laughed, rolling my eyes. “When will he learn? Girls don’t like the whole cocky thing.”

Nate laughed, and grabbed his coat. “Right, well I think it’s actually working this time.”

“Want to go get something to eat for lunch later?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said, walking to the door. He stopped and turned for a moment. “You should know though, Steve tried to get you alone again.”

“Oh God, Steve?” I groaned. “Please tell me you stopped that from happening.”

“Of course I did,” he smiled. “But he was your boyfriend, you know?”

“He was not my boyfriend!”

“He was definitely your boyfriend.”

“We went out for like three days,” I crossed my arms.

“You went out for like two months,” Nate rolled his eyes.

“Wow, was it really two months?”

He laughed, and shook his head. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Sometimes, you have to be ridiculous,” I shrugged. “Besides you love me exactly as I am.”

He sighed. “Unfortunately. See you later?”

“Yeah, call me when the girl rejects him.”

He laughed as he left.

“We are not friends anymore,” Laura said, crossing her arms as she sat on my bed.

“And why not?” I asked as I straightened my hair. I had to meet Nate for lunch in half an hour. As suspected, the girl had definitely rejected Frank, to no one’s surprise. Apparently, Josh had come so they were going to come have lunch with us too.

“You were drunker than me,” she pouted. “You’re not supposed to be drunker than me. You’re supposed to get drunk, and I’m supposed to be drunker and you’re supposed to take care of me. This is the way of our world.”

I rolled my eyes and laughed. “You mean your world.”

“My world, everyone’s world, the same diff,” she waved it off. “But fine we can be best friends again. After all, I would not want to get on your bad side after last night.”

“Oh God,” I said. “What did I do?”

“A lot of things, which I’m sure Nate already filled you in on,” she shrugged. “What I’m referring to is the fact that you punched that bitch in the face. God, she has been begging for one for so long now. I’m only mad you got to hit her and not me.”

I laughed. “Laura, only you would see the upside of this. She lives on my street. She probably already told her mom and I’m gonna be dead.”

Laura rolled her eyes. “You know that bitch told her mom she was at her friend’s house studying. She could never say it was you because she’ll have to tell the truth. She probably told her she fell.”

I sighed and finished my hair, checking myself out in the mirror. I had decided on jeans and a blue blouse. “I just hope everyone was as drunk as me and they don’t remember.”

“I’m pretty sure they will,” Laura said apologetically. “But on the plus side, everyone thinks you’re even cooler than you were before.”

I groaned but didn’t comment. Great, just what I needed. To be thought of as cool because I had punched a girl in the face…
