Moonlight Requisition

Cooper

"Diviértete en la escuela cariño."

"Hago. Adiós mamá."

I closed the car door and walked into the unfamiliar school. I made my way to the office, ignoring the curious looks I was receiving. The surprisingly young woman at the front desk gave me my schedule and locker number with a smile. How unusual; most of the time the secretaries glare at me.

I sighed and analyzed the classes on my schedule:

First Period- Advanced Calculus: Mr. Cassaza: Rm. 209
Second Period- AP Creative Writing: Ms. Blanco: Rm. 010
Third Period- P.E.: Coach Hert
Fourth Period- Lunch
Fifth Period- AP History: Ms. Davis: Rm. 320
Sixth Period- AP Environmental Science: Mr. Lunario: Rm. 218
Seventh Period- AP Spanish V: Mr. O: Rm. 305
Eighth Period- Study Hall

I was in Advanced Calculus early and Mr. Cassaza, clearly startled by the presence of a junior in a senior class, told me to sit anywhere. I chose the seat by the window, because although I'm in advanced classes, I never pay attention. I looked outside and let my mind wander.

Being the new kid is a normal thing for me. I've moved ten times in my seventeen years of life. I've changed schools eleven times. I don't usually try to get to know people at these schools. Because in the end, I always end up moving. What's the point of trying to make friends if I'm never going to see them again? It was the same in every school. I'd start in the middle of the year, stay as distant from the other students as possible, and leave within three months. Why should this school be any different?

The bell rang, signaling the end of first period. I figured that I had enough time to go to my locker and embarked on the journey of actually finding it. I let out a sigh of relief when I discovered that it was by my second period class and opened it. I was in the process of shoving the a pile of books into it when a loud bang echoed throughout the hallway. I peeked around my locker and found myself face to face with a very disoriented girl.

"Hey. I am so sorry," I apologized.

"You shouldn't leave that open," she replied. I raised my eyebrow.

"But I was looking in it," I stated in confusion. All she did in response was stare into my eyes. After a few seconds of silence, her staring was making me nervous.

"I'm sorry," I repeated.

"It's fine," the girl muttered. I looked at her head and noticed the giant bruise that was forming.

"Your head doesn't look so fine."

"Uhm thanks..." she looked insulted. Stifling a laugh, I brought my thumb to her forehead.

"I mean, it's bruising, and there is a big bump forming already." The girl backed away from my hand and eyed me warily.

"Yeah, it's going to be nasty tomorrow," she said, with a curious expression on her face.

"Oh, I'm Cooper by the way. I'm new here," I said, like I was reading her mind.

"I'm Jane." She stuck her hand out and I shook it without hesitation. I should have been more careful though, because the moment our hands touched, I felt something. It wasn't the type of feeling one would get that came with the butterflies and sweaty palms. This electric current felt almost supernatural. The jolt made me feel like she knew everything about me and I definitely didn't like it.

She must have felt it too because of the look on her face and I dropped her hand.

"Uh, uhm, I have, have to get to class," Jane stammered, backing away from me.

"Yeah, see you around." I shut my locker and quickly made my great escape.

"Yeah, nice to meet you," I heard her yell from behind me.

"You too," I called, without looking back.

Maybe this school won't be so bad after all. Maybe Jane is what makes this school different from the rest.

I'm so excited for this story, like you have no idea. It's gonna be epic, I promise.
The Spanish part is:
"Have fun in school sweetie"
"I will. Bye mom."
