Something I Can't Fake

True Colors.

Artie sat at a table all by himself. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Tina laughing and having a good time with her friends. Really, Tina was the only good friend that he had. Nobody ever wanted to be friends with the kid in the wheel chair. That particular day, Artie had little to no appetite, so he slowly munched on an apple and stared at the wall.

'Why are you sitting all by yourself?' Finn remarked pulling over a chair.

Though Finn used to bully him before he joined glee, Artie felt comfortable talking to Finn. He had proven himself to be trust worthy.

'Guess I'm just not in a people mood today.' Artie said shrugging.

'You alright?' Finn asked placing his hand on Artie's shoulder.

'No...' Artie sighed.

Finn raised his eyebrows and Artie told him about his date with Tina...and how it ended. Reliving Tina’s betrayal was not something he was prepared for. Constantly, he had to stop to collect himself. Finn really felt for his friend in the chair…he’d be a wreck too if Quinn lied to him about something that important.

“That’s a tough one.” Finn said running is hand though his hair.

“I miss her.” Artie said blinking slowly.
“Even though I’m very incensed with her…I can’t get her out of my head. Even if I try…she’ just…always in the back of my skull.”

“You sir, are in love.” Finn said sitting back in his chair and placing his hands behind his head.

“What? No…” Artie defended.

“As much as I disagree with you…I need to go to English.” Finn said grabbing his backpack off the floor and hoisting it onto his shoulder. Artie nodded once and Finn took off.

For the brief second, Artie turned his head to face Tina. She was intently listening to what her friend on the right of her had to say, nodding accordingly. He took a deep breath and quickly turned his head before anyone noticed that he was looking at her.

“How could I be in love with her?” He thought. To get his mind off the subject, Artie began munching on his Apple again. The idea of such crazy hypotheses made his head spin.

Tina was the first one in the room after school. Mr. Schu was going though music. After seeing how well the kids did without any "hairography", he decided on a new piece for sectionals. This time though, Rachel or Mercedes wouldn’t be the lead vocals.

"How would you feel about your own song?" He asked approaching Tina.

"O...oh. I don't...th...think that'd be a good idea." Tina said looking to the side.

"Just give it a try." Mr. Schu said handing her sheet music.

Tina stared up at Mr. Schu like he was mad crazy. She thought she had an okay voice, but Rachel and Mercedes were really the star singers. What if Rachel tried steeling it away from her…again? She’s kind of a spotlight whore.

“Everyone grab a stool.” Mr. Schu said once everyone came filing in.

This would be a very big change compared to their last number. The way his kids sung with the deaf kids, it warmed his heart to see a performance so simple, be so beautiful.

“Ready, Tina?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.

The piano and backup vocals began. The last time she was given a solo, the part was given to Rachel instead. Even so, she opened her mouth to sing.

“And I see your true colors shining though. I see your true colors, and that’s why I love you. So don’t be afraid, to let them show. Your true colors, true colors, are beautiful like a rainbow.”

Tina looked up from her music once the song was over, and the piano playing stopped. Mr. Schu nodded his head and smiled in approval at her. It was like Mr. Schu’s song choice was intentionally picked for her. The lyrics hit really close to home.

“You two get home safely.” Finn said putting his arm around Quinn.

“Of course.” She said nodding slightly.

Finn kissed the side of her face and returned his arm to his side. Artie couldn’t help but envy Finn sometimes. He had both a girlfriend and a baby on the way. It was moments like that when he, at the same time, missed Tina and didn’t.

The music room emptied slowly. Everyone was sharing his or her plans for the long anticipated weekend. Tina, though she arrived first, was one of the last to leave. Right as she passed though the doorway, she began to hear noises come out of the room she just exited. Curious, she turned around and briefly stuck her head into the room. Artie was lightly humming to himself as he spun himself around in his wheelchair. She couldn’t help but smile at his joy. Quickly, before he noticed, Tina retuned to the direction she was originally going.
