Fatality: The Final Race

Crashes and Chances

A midnight race--just a drag preparing my Viper for Fatality tomorrow. Black flag drops--the stupid smile still on my face--the Viper shoots away from all of them. Twelve seconds-first to cross the finish line--step out of my car. When brakes fail--people are hurt, sometimes killed. The mustang wouldn't stop and I couldn't move out of its way in time--it hit me going about 150 mph sending me flying through the air and crashing through the ground. Everything went black--I was sure I was dead. All I could think of was James. I heard people muttering---I felt them carry me away---I was dead. I knew it.

I woke up and James was by my side.

"Hi baby." I whispered.

"look who's alive!" She gently hugged me.

I looked in her eyes, "I couldn't leave you."

She smiled, "You're here for four more days baby."

"When's Fatality?"

"Tomorrow."

"I have to get out and race."

"I know. I talked to Damen." She paused, "If I race--we're both free."

"Are...Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"Okay baby."

"Autumn...you're alive."

"Barely."

"So...James is racing for you?"

I nodded, "Yeah...sorry."

"Don't. This wasn't your fault."

"No. How's the mustang?"

"Bad...crashed..pretty sure it's totaled."

"Driver?"

"Dead."

"Who was he?"

"Nick"

"Oh...go...go teach James how to drive for Fatality." I was asleep before he was completely gone.

"Now..take it easy--not super slow but be careful."

She nodded and drove around the prep track. Slowly at first then picking up speed.

"Good. Go get sleep. In a bed."

"Fine."

She walked home, set the alarm and crashed.

Alarm went off and she jolted up.

See ran to see me..then Damen.

"James--be careful."

"I will."

"Baby--Boss fixed the Camaro."

She stood shocked.

"Be prepared."

She nodded as Damen led her out.

"Damen--I want the live race."

He nodded.

He was busy giving her last minute tips and questioning her sanity for doing this.

"Well...can't say I'd be brave enough."

"She needs her freedom."

He nodded, "Who's Josh?"

She looked pissed, "He's my.....dad."

"Oh...why do you hate him?"

"He...Nothing."

"James you can tell me."

"No I can't Damen!--not yet."

He backed off, "Okay."

"Thank you."

He led her to the viper, "One more run around an old track?"

She nodded and took off.

Nerves drove all of us crazy I lie in the hospital bed--hoping she'd be okay.

"It needs gas and oil."

"Okay."

"Other than that--it drove fine."

"Don't be mad."

She just shook her head, "Nerves."

"You'll do fine." he sighed.

She drove of....starting line....awaiting race time....
