She sat down next to him. Well on back of the other end of the bench he was sitting on…but Josh thought it was close enough. She was slightly flushed, from walking he assumed. She ran her hand through her dark brown hair, the purple streaks catching the light, and her skinny jeans, converse and Green Day shirt made him smile. She was listening to Paramore on her iPod. He could tell it was Paramore because she was singing along under her breath. He figured he should probably stop staring, but he couldn't tear his eyes away. That was until she looked around…

Angi bought her ticket and climbed onto the back of the bench, leaning on her knees. She didn't notice the other person, too caught up in her own world. She was slightly annoyed after waking up to a note from her parents:

Gone to Melbourne for the week, don't get into too much trouble.

They'd left a credit card and buggered off. Angi had taken one look at the note, slipped the card into her wallet, her wallet into her pocket, and left, headed for the city. Something about the city made her feel free, unlike the suburban Shire she lived in. The only good thing about where she lived was that it was near a train station. Several train stations at that. She started singing along to Playing God - the song on her iPod- and she looked up from the ground, catching the guy looking at her. She smiled as he looked away quickly, blushing. She eyed him head to toe. Tall, she guessed from his sitting position, messy brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He wore skinny jeans and a t-shirt that read 'Why the hell are you reading my shirt? Don't you have something better to do?' She chuckled at that and he looked up.

Josh heard her laughing and looked up to find out why.
"Hi." She greeted him, taking one of her ear phones out.
"Reading my shirt?" He guessed. She nodded,
"I like it." Cue awkward silence. For him anyway. She seemed to get amusement out of his awkwardness.
"So, uh, I'm Josh." He said finally, introducing himself.
"Angi." She replied with a grin.
"Angi, it's pretty." He said, smiling to himself as she blushed slightly.
"Thanks." She mumbled, looking down at her hands.
"So where you headed?" He asked, wanting her to look at him again.
"The city." She replied simply, granting his wish.
"Any particular reason why?"
"Nope." She grinned and he couldn't help but smile back.
"Nice."
"So what about you?"
"Going to visit my grandma in Kogarah." He sighed.
"Don't seem too happy bout that." She teased.
"I'm not particularly." He replied.
"Any particular reason why?" She was smirking and he couldn't help but laugh.
"Well yes, but for the purpose of this conversation, nope." He said and she laughed with him.

The train pulled in and they both stood up in a synchronised motion, causing them to laugh more as they stepped on to the old, heavily graffitied train. Angi lead the way down to the bottom level and sat in the end double seat, her favourite place to sit.
"Why the end?" Josh asked, sitting opposite her.
"I don't like the middle, makes me feel exposed. I like sitting in the end corner in my own little world. I don't like being interrupted." She explained.
"Ahh." Josh said with a nod, thinking.
"What cha thinking about?" Angi asked, leaning forward, curious.
"Just that, I'm finding you extremely interesting." He said, surprised at how easily he was admitting this to her, "And I'm wondering why you're talking to me." He added. Angi shrugged.
"You seemed interesting too." She grinned.
Josh couldn't look away from her. Every inch of her fascinated him. But before he knew it they were two stops from Kogarah.
"Damn." He said, looking out the window at the Allawah sign.
"Two more stops 'till Kogarah." Angi said with a slight frown.
"Here." Josh said, pulling out his phone, "What's your number?" She gave it to him with a slight smile as she dug into her pockets.
"Ahh crap, I forgot my phone." She said with a frown as her hands came out empty.
"It's ok; I'll call you later tonight?" He asked, slightly weary. Was that too soon? But she smiled.
"That'd be nice." By now the train had pulled up at Kogarah and he sighed as he stood up.
"It's was awesome meeting you." He said, wishing he could phase the goodbye better.
"I'll see you." Angi said a promise in her eyes. He walked off the train, still looking at her. He almost bumped into a man in a black jacket on his way out.
"Oops, sorry." He said as he stepped off, waving at her through the window as the train took off.

5’o clock. Ring, ring. Ring, ring. No answer. Josh sighed, it was probably too early, she was probably still in the city. He’d giver another hour.

5:45. Still no answer. Not at 6, 6:30 or 7. He threw his phone onto his bed as his mum called him for dinner. He want to exit to room but paused and went back to grab his phone. Just in case she rang him back. He sat at the dinner table to eat, not particularly paying attention to his parents. Not that they were paying attention to him, they were staring at the TV. As he raised a forkful of pasta to his mouth, a news headline drew his attention.
“…And there has been a mass shooting on a city bound train between Kogarah and Penshurst,” The serious faced news reporter was saying. Josh dropped his fork and stared at the TV.
“The man had only let out a few shorts before he was apprehended by Cityrail staff but it has left two people wounded and sixteen year old Angi Cater dead.” Josh couldn’t continue listening as a picture of Angi being carried away flashed up on the screen. He blinked, wide eyed as the shock settled in. A single tear fell from his eye as his mother turned to him.
“Oh sweetie, did you know her?” She asked. Josh shook his head, turning away from the television.
“No, not really.” He mumbled, and he never would.
