Returning to You

Jessica’s POV
I woke up to someone banging on the fabric of my tent. I moaned as I rolled onto my back, the ground not being all that forgiving and therefore very uncomfortable
“what!?” I asked groggily as I wiped my eyes with the backs of my hands
“you getting out of there or am I coming in?” a voice spoke and I mumbled to myself before rolling onto my other side and unzipping the tent flaps. Poking my head out a squinted my eyes against the sun and glared at the person there who’s features were unknown because of the sun being behind them.
“what do you want?” I asked and the person crouched down so I could see them more fully and I saw that it was Brian, I thought he would still be asleep. I looked behind him again at the position of the sun and guessed it to be about ten in the morning, I had slept in.
Brian smiled drawing my attention back to him and he said
“well I was wondering if you wanted help with your place?” I raised a brow and replied
“Brian I forgive you for when we were in school, you don’t have to make it up to me” he shrugged
“this isn’t me making it up to you, this is me trying to be your friend again, is that alright?” I smiled slightly and moving a strand of hair from my face I sighed
“yeah sure you can, I have to take the bathroom apart today before I call a plumber, let me get dressed and we can start” he nodded and stood up and moved towards my house before I crawled back in my tent and got ready.
Walking through the back door I found Brian stood there leaning against the wall with a take away coffee cup in his hand and another by his foot along with a plastic food container. Nudging it with his foot he said
“Suzy thought you would be hungry and sent over some muffins and I thought we would need the caffeine boost today” I nodded and smiled
“thank you and tell Suzy so as well” he nodded and I got a muffin and drank the coffee.
When we were finished I looked towards the stairs and said
“so I guess we should get started then” he nodded with a small smile and we made our way upstairs. I had already cleaned the room though I had near enough thrown up several times while doing so. Walking in Brian looked around and said
“I think you should call the plumber first really I mean I don’t want to take out anything that would be best left in” I nodded and took out my phone.
When I finished the call I looked at Brian and shrugged
“he says not to touch anything and he’ll do it for me, I just have to choose a suite to put in here and in the other bathrooms and he’ll install them” Brian grinned
“well then I guess we should go get them then” I looked at him and smiled, he did look rather good right now
“ok lets go, do you have a car?” he nodded with a twinkle in his eye
“yeah and you know what I think you will like this car” I looked at him questioningly but he kept that smile on his face and I ignored him until we got outside and I saw it, I stopped in my tracks. There was my car, my Dodge Charger, my baby. Brian noticed I had stopped and he looked at me with a grin
“I kept it all this time because well it’s a nice car and I also figured if anything happened you would kick my ass” I nodded absently and walked over to it. Running my hand over the hood I smiled and looked at Brian
“thank you Brian, I didn’t know if you would actually get it” he raised a brow
“why wouldn’t I?” I gave him a look and he nodded “oh right, well I did so can we get in now?” I nodded and we got in and soon we were speeding off down the road.
Arriving at the homeware store we walked through the main doors and I looked upwards at the signs before walking off in the direction of bathrooms.
Once we reached the bathroom area I started looking at all the different suites while I talked to Brian
“so how is everyone doing I mean is Matt still with Val?” he nodded
“yeah he is, they’re married now actually” I chuckled as I stood in a shower stall seeing if it was big enough
“I figured they would be, Val talked about him so damn much” Brain looked at me curiously
“you and Val were friends?” I shrugged
“acquaintances really but I heard her talking to her friends in class” he nodded and I looked around the stall before asking him
“can you get in here with me, I want to know if it’s big enough” Brian looked at me like I was crazy before he got in the stall with me and asked
“you gonna be having two people in here often then?” I laughed and answered mischievously
“I might, you never know” Brian laughed at my teasing and looking at the limited space between us he mused
“well I don’t think this works then” I shook my head
“no it doesn’t” we got out and carried on looking and talking
“so any significant other in your life?” he asked and I shook my head
“nah, no one could keep up with my moving and constant trying to kill myself stunts, it was actually funny when I took one guy with me when I went to bungee jump, I convinced him to do it as well and he was so terrified that when it was over he dumped me” Brian raised a brow and I shrugged “it wasn’t a loss, the guy was a loser but good in bed” Brian laughed and we carried on.
When I found the three I liked I arranged for them to be delivered and then Brian and I got in the car and headed for McDonalds.
We ordered our food and when it arrived we went and sat down and started eating. I dipped a fry in ketchup and placed it in my mouth when Brian said
“you know I can’t get over how much you’ve changed” I looked at him as I dipped another fry and asked
“what do you mean?” he ate his fry and said
“well you’re less polite than you used to be and I mean you talk about sex openly, I mean the girl I used to know wouldn’t have slept in a tent either or even thought of taking on that place but you seem to take it all in your stride, your less..”
“High strung?” I offered and he nodded. I smiled and said “well that’s because I am, I learned on my travels not to take life too seriously and so I don’t” he nodded and we ate a little more before he said
“so why did you come home now?” I took the skin off one of my nuggets and dipped it in ketchup and ate it before eating the skin then I answered
“dads gone since he got the death penalty so I’m back because I can’t let go of that place, it doesn’t feel right even if some of my worst memories are in that place, so are some of my happiest you know?” he nodded and I ate another nugget like the last one while he bit into his cheeseburger.
We finished and he took me back to my place, as I was about to get out he asked
“do you want your car back?” I looked back at him and said with a smile
“yeah, if you’re willing to give it up” he stroked the wheel and said
“I am only if I can drive it sometimes, I’ll miss her but she is yours” I laughed and nodded before I went to get out but thinking again I turned and hugged him. He stiffened in surprise but I carried on and said
“thank you for today” he nodded and I moved back and smiled at him again before I got out and walked up the drive and into my house.
