Returning to You

Chapter 9

Jessica’s POV
Everyone just stopped what they were doing and looked at me in disbelief. I lowered my eyes to the table thinking that I had said something wrong and now I was embarrassed. Johnny spoke from beside me
“you’ve never heard us?” I shrugged and asked while still looking at the table though now I was fiddling with my fork
“should I have” I heard scoffing and then Brian saying cockily, something I always hated
“we’re only one of the best bands out there, we’ve had loads of albums and singles out” I shrugged again and said
“I haven’t heard you guys, I’m sorry that you may be offended by that but while travelling I don’t generally have time to stop and listen to music, I’m either without the technology or when on a plane or bus etcetera I’m asleep” I pushed my chair back and stood up, I looked up finally and smiled at Suzy “it was a wonderful meal and I enjoyed seeing you all again but I need to finish at least one of the rooms in the house so I can have it ready for furniture, now if you would excuse me” I bowed my head slightly and then turned and walked out the dining room door then out of the house, no one followed.
I was in the kitchen with a screw driver in hand trying to unscrew the cabinet from the wall when someone spoke up from behind me
“you know after all that travel you didn’t lose that politeness of yours” I groaned in annoyance and asked
“what do you want Brian?” I carried on with the unit and I heard him step forwards a little before he stopped and said
“well you rushed out of my house so fast you didn’t let any of us speak” I stopped my actions for a moment before I carried on
“I needed to get this finished and it seemed you guys were upset about it so I left before anything got awkward” I heard him move again before he was squatted beside my Indian style form and he said
“we were only shocked, it’s not often we find someone who hasn’t heard of us” I scoffed and he smiled, I could see from the corner of my eye “yeah I thought you would like that but it is true, we don’t and it was a shock so forgive us for making you feel awkward” I stopped my movement and turned my head to look at him with a raised brow
“why Brian you seem to have actually gotten some manners while I was gone” he chuckled and nodded
“yeah Suzy eventually beat them into me, took her long enough really” I nodded and went to go back to trying o get the screw out when Brian took the screwdriver from my hand and nudged me out of the way. I stopped with only slight hesitation before I shuffled to the side and let him have a go.
While watching him work the screws out I asked
“so what is the name of your band?” he chuckled again
“Avenged Sevenfold” I furrowed my brows in question and when he glanced at me he saw and answered “Matt got the name from the bible or something and we thought it was cool so we kept it” I nodded and asked
“so you guys are really successful then?” he nodded
“successful enough to own my own house and car and everything I have and well not have to work for like the next thirty years” I let out a whistle and he grinned before he asked a question
“so how did you get into writing?” I huffed out a breath and thought a moment before I answered
“well I was starting my travelling and well I got into the whole helping people thing before I got the adrenaline junkie part and soon ran out of money, a magazine was offering money for articles and so I just wrote one and sent it in and they liked it so much they printed it and asked me to write more for them, they paid me enough to travel and for food etcetera and as I got more popular with readers I earned more and travelled more” he nodded and smiled at my adrenaline junkie reference then he asked
“so now you’ve stopped travelling are you going to lose your job?” I giggled
“not for a while, I travelled so much that I still have back written articles that should last the magazine about another year but when that’s done yeah I’ll lose my job but hey I can find another one, with public relations for a company or something, I know enough languages now and I can talk to people easily” Brian looked at me in an assessing way then before he nodded
“yeah you can which is definitely a change from school” I sighed as he pulled another screw out, leaning back against the wall I replied
“Brian I was at a bad time in my life, it wasn’t good for me and I know that I seem self absorbed by saying it but I felt like I was alone and so I stayed that way” Brian nodded and stopped moving and looked at me
“I know, I understand that now but back then you were kind of my sparring buddy and I enjoyed it I mean it wasn’t as good as when we were little and friends but at least we talked to each other, as soon as you stopped I felt like you were shutting me out but now with age” he chuckled “and a bit more wisdom I see what you were going through and I really am sorry for what I said in the hallway that day and made you so mad” I shrugged
“all is forgiven” I eyed the cabinet “especially if you get that off the wall for me” he chuckled and with a few more screws it was off the wall.
I stood and smiled
“thank you for the help Brian” he smiled, his lips turning up at the corner revealing a little hint of white teeth
“no problem, I needed to come and apologise anyway” I nodded and bent to pick up the pieces of wood and we walked to the sitting room where I threw the wood out and into the skip. Brian laughed and shook his head
“you know I would never have taken you for a girl who would take apart a house when we were younger” I smiled
“well I never would have taken you for someone that helped others when we were younger either but people change” he smiled slightly and nodded
“I guess they do” we stared at each other for a few moments, silent moments before he nodded and walked towards the window and hopped out.
I sighed and shook myself out of the trance his eyes had put me in and looking out the window frame I saw the sky was darkening so I figured it was time to stop working and get some sleep.
I made my way outside to my tent and changed into shorts an oversized t-shirt before I climbed into my sleeping bag and lay there staring at the canopy willing my eyes to shut. The thing is though that when they shut, I saw Brian’s smiling face.
