Dead in the Water

Don't Leave Me

(Nonnie’s POV)

I watched as Amanda ran off with Sisky. At least now I wouldn’t have to worry about her hurting Frank. I mean Erelin said she wouldn’t hurt him so now all I had to do was find him. They said that they didn’t feel anything, well neither did I. I mean where would Frank go. I closed my eyes and tried to think of where he would be.

“Please Frank, they say we have some kind of connection. Tell me where you are.” I said out loud. I felt something in the pit of my stomach, like a pull. I kept my eyes closed and followed the pull blindly until I heard a creaking sound.

“Nonnie!” Erelin said. “Don’t move.” I opened my eyes to see that I was on one of the older parts of the dock. It was falling apart and I was standing over the water, the wood under my feet looked near its breaking point. “I’m going to try and come out there.”

“No! Too much weight and it will break under me. I’ll just try and come back.”

“Frank you can’t just leave her again.” I heard Ray say.

“Ray?” I called. They were somewhere under me.

“Nonnie?” Frank said coming into view. They were under the dock where the tide was starting to come in. “What the hell are you doing here?” he asked.

“I came looking for you,” I said.

“Nonnie you need to go back.” Mikey said. I took a step back carefully and I heard the wood creaking under my weight.

“Frank promise me you won’t leave,” I said taking another step back.

“Nonnie let’s just get you off there, then we’ll talk.”

“I could stand out here all night,” I yelled back. “If you leave then I might as well fall into the water right here and now.”

“Nonnie don’t say things like that, you wouldn’t ever do anything like that.” Frank said. I could hear his cocky little smirk. He was right though the old happy Non wouldn’t commit suicide. Right now I had to prove a point. “Don’t you dare,” he said.

“What?”

“I can hear what you’re thinking and you had better not jump.”

“Are you staying?”

“I said once you get back to safety we would talk about it.” he answered.

“Wrong answer,” I said, then I did it. I jumped into the cold water. The shock of the cold took my breath away and I couldn’t move for a minute. I just sunk, until I realized what was happening I tried to swim to the surface, but I was never that good a swimmer even when the water wasn’t this cold. My muscles were locking up on me and I couldn’t get to the surface. Someone grabbed me and swam to the surface.

“Are you crazy?” Frank said pulling me to shore.

“Are you staying?” I said through chattering teeth. He just looked at me.

“If you ever do anything like that…”

“You won’t know cause you won’t be here.” I said. Bob took off his hoodie and put it over me as Frank carried me to Amanda, Sisky, and Erelin. They all looked pretty pissed at me.

“Nonnie…” Amanda started.

“I know I know. You can scold me later.” I said. “ I did it to prove two points. One that Frank cares for me and wouldn’t ever hurt me. Two to prove that I need him here with me.”

“Let’s get her back to the car, before she freezes to death.” Sisky said with a laugh, I couldn’t stop shivering.

“Erelin could you help her to the car?” Frank asked. “I don’t have body heat so I’m not really helping her get warm.” I could tell he wanted me to get warm in his arms and felt bad that he couldn’t help.

“I’m okay, there’s heat in the car. Plus contrary to the water it’s a pretty warm night out here.” my teeth were still chattering, but I really was starting to get warmer.

“Nonnie promise me you won’t ever do anything like that again.” He said only I heard it in my head.

“Promise me you won’t leave.” We were both being stubborn. One of us was bound to fold, but it wasn’t going to be me.

“I promise,” I heard in my head, then he said it out loud. “Now your turn.” He said.

“I promise never to do anything like that again.” We got into the back of Ray’s car and they followed Amanda’s car back to Pete’s house. I was content in the car soaking wet in Frank’s cold arms.
