Dead in the Water

When Two Paths Cross Again

(Amanda’s POV)
I thought that it was over and that I could open my eyes again but as I started to, Martin brought me into another one of his memories. I wanted to see more but I was also afraid too. I was afraid my heart would break even more for him.

“Martin! Martin! No! I knew this was a bad idea!” I heard Paul say.

“I’m calling 911.” Another voice said which I think belonged to one of his other band mates.

“He’s dead! No, this is my fault!” I heard Paul say. “I shouldn’t have argued. I should have said I am driving him home regardless.” Paul said.

“What kind of person leaves bite marks?” The other one said.

“I don’t know. I just knew that when I called his cell and he wasn’t home yet after an hour…” Paul trailed off.

I watched as Martin suddenly woke up, extending his fangs. His vampire instinct took over and he reached for Paul. Martin’s other two friends were standing in shock.

“Your dead, man.” Paul said with fear in his eyes as Martin held Paul up by his neck and was struggling to breathe.

“Martin, man, it’s us.” One of the other friends finally said coming to try to hit Martin to get him to put Paul down.

“What are you?” Paul choked out as Martin saw the fear in his eyes.

“Paul…Paul…stay away from me!” Martin said letting Paul go who was gasping for air.

“Everyone just leave me alone.” Martin said confused and backing away from everyone.

The sirens of an ambulance quickly approached and I watched as Martin ran away from his friends. He was scared, alone, hurt, and confused at what was happening to him.
I watched as Martin had stopped running and ducked in an alley. He took his fingers and traced over his mouth and teeth to find two protruding fangs. Then he started to remember what had happened to him. Martin then looked at the night sky and knew he had to find shelter before the sun came up. The only logical place he could think of was to head back to his apartment.

His keys were in his pocket and he fumbled for them. The door was already unlocked when he tried to open it. When he walked in, his hunger called to him but he had to fight it off because all three of his friends were sitting in his living room wanting answers.

I watched, as Martin had to explain what had happened to him to his friends who rallied behind him. They went and found blood at a hospital, which I am pretty sure that they managed to sneak in and steal at first until Martin had made some connections. It was not a happy time for him or his friends because now all of their lives had changed.

The next memory he showed me was when he first fell asleep. Martin went four nights without sleeping from worry and depression on what he was going to do with his life. His first night of sleep brought him his answers. He dreamed of me.

Martin was to find me and protect me from Ian and any other vampires along the way. We would meet again and he was right. Our paths were to cross again. Martin only showed me a little of his dream and I wondered why. I wondered what he was not showing me.

I saw as he trained and learned how to hunt and kill vampires. When he was ready, he said goodbye to his friends and headed out in search of me. Three months ago, he learned I was in L.A. and the rest was history.

I saw as Martin watched me for a while to know who I had become and whom my friends were. Then he just seemed to know I was in trouble and found me in the hospital two months ago. When I had felt like giving up and knew I was dying, I felt his presence. He had some how willed me his strength and managed to appear in my unconscious state encouraging me to fight as I always have. Then I heard his voice sing to me again in my ear only this time I opened my eyes to see him singing to me and I smiled.

“I am so sorry you had to go through all that.” I said with tears starting to build in my eyes.

“I told you we would be together again somehow.” He smiled as I pulled him into an embrace.

Martin may have been right about finding me again, but I wondered how much of his dream that steered him in my direction, did he learn about me. Does he know that I am slowly dying from being a slayer; that the one thing I was called to do to protect people is killing me because there can only be one? Maybe Martin has another motive for being here. My dream that I had, told me I needed to find someone who could help me. Is Martin the one who can keep me living?
