Broken Hearted on the Mend

Chapter 18

Emmett's Point of View

There were now only two weeks left of school. Finals were this week and all next week was graduation practice for the Saturday Graduation Ceremony. Rhiannon had spent the weekend with her brother and she came back so excited for the time that she spent with him. They had made plans for spending time this weekend as well. I was happy to see Rhiannon finally smiling so much. When I had first met her, her facial expression was the same. It was melancholy and sad. It also seemed that she was a little depressed. Now though, it seemed as if she was always smiling. I loved her smile because it was full and beautiful just like her.

She hung out with Leah and Bella a lot. Sometimes I felt like I didn't see her as much anymore, but I knew I was wrong because whenever she came home from her outings she always walked towards me first and gave me a kiss. I knew I loved her and she wasn't shy at showing me that she loved me back the same way. Thursday was the last day of finals, but we still had to go to school on Friday, which was today. I was completely bored. We weren't learning anything new because the year was basically over. All we did in each class was watch stupid Disney movies because that was the only kind that the school was allowed to show the students.

I was sitting in English class at the end of the day just hoping that the day would just end so we could go home when I noticed that Rhiannon had gotten a text message. She had noticed as well and answered it. I couldn't
see what she had received, but she replied with a positive answer.

"Emmett, Emmett, Earth to Emmett," someone tapped me on my head lightly.

I looked over to see Rhiannon grinning ear to ear at me.

"What Rhiannon," I asked grinning right back to her.

"I need you to bring my backpack home for me because I'm meeting up with a few friends after school," she said smiling.

"What friends," I asked confused.

"Just some friends that came to visit me," she said.

"Okay, do you know when you'll be home," I asked feeling a little concerned.

"Sunday," she answered simply.

"Sunday," I repeated perplexed.

"Yeah, they are just going to drop me off at Justin's," she said.

"Oh okay," I replied starting to feel a little gloomy.

"Hey listen; when I come back on Sunday from Justin's will you come walking in the forest with me. Just the two of us," she asked.

"Of course I would," I said with a huge grin on my face.

The bell rang just then and I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. Rhiannon gave me a swift kiss on the cheeks, but before she could pull away I grabbed her by the waist and pulled her into a tight embrace. She giggled and kissed me once on the lips and then I let her go. I watched her walk out the classroom and heaved a heavy sigh. Don't get me wrong because I was happy that she was finally showing something other than fear and sadness, but I couldn't help but feel as if we were growing apart in some way. I had to hold onto her, but I just didn't know how to.

Rhiannon's Point of View

I was in English class when I got the text message from Mike and Sarah. Mike texted me and asked if he could take me up to Justin's place so we could talk about stuff along the way. I knew Emmett would be curious about what the text was about so before I had to say anything I sent a quick reply and turned to see Emmett staring at me, but his golden eyes were unfocused a little. Finals were over, but they forced us to spend all day Friday at school. Next week they were forcing the entire school to spend a week watching movies. I felt bad for them, but it was only fair in the school board's eyes to make the underclassmen suffer because the seniors needed to practice for the graduation ceremony.

"Emmett, Emmett, Earth to Emmett," I said almost laughing as I tapped him gently on the head.

"What Rhiannon," he said returning the grin that was on my face.

"I need you to bring home my backpack for me because I'm meeting with a few friends after school," I said smiling at him.

"What friends," he asked confused.

"Just some friends that came to visit me," I replied.

"Okay, do you know when you'll be home," he asked.

"Sunday," I replied.

"Sunday," he repeated sounding perplexed.

"Yeah, they offered to take me to Justin's for the weekend," I answered.

"Oh okay," he said and I could detect a little sadness in his voice.

"Hey listen; when I come back on Sunday from Justin's will you come walking in the forest
with me. Just the two of us," I asked feeling a small twitch of a smile at the corner of my
mouth.

"Of course I would," he said plastering a huge grin on his face.

The bell rang and I jumped up and gave Emmett a quick kiss on the cheek, but just as I was about to pull away and leave he grabbed me around the waist and I squealed in surprise. He pulled me into his lap so I gave him a kiss on the lips and he grinned against mine. He then let me go and I ran out of the classroom. I could sense that Emmett and I were growing apart. I don't know why we were suddenly growing apart slowly, but I could tell it was happening. I couldn't let that happen though because Emmett has helped me through so many difficult times in my life that I am so grateful for him. He helped pick up my life and start turning it around.

I walked out to the front of the school to a huge crowd of people at the curb of the sidewalk. I pushed my way through to see a sleek black Saleen S7 sitting by the side. I knew it was Mike and Sarah because they said that they would be waiting out front. I opened the door and heard a bunch of the other students start talking about what they were seeing. After I closed the door the car started moving and when I looked back I saw Emmett standing on the curb a look of complete concern on his face. I heaved a sigh and turned around. As the car drove down the street I realized that no one was behind the wheel. I began to panic because I had never seen a car drive itself before.

"Please do not panic Miss Hart," a female voice said.

"Who said that," I asked panic starting to rise.

"I did," the voice replied.

"Who are you," I asked.

"My name is HANA which stands for Hart Associations Neophyte Automobile," the voice
replied.

"What about KARR," I asked.

I had found information on the cars of KARR and KITT before I even knew that Mike and
Sarah were the ones who had helped with those projects. It was a little unnerving to read about how KARR went ballistic and started destroying innocent humans that he felt were not innocent at all.

"KARR has been destroyed by KITT, or Knight Industries Three Thousand," HITT answered.

"Then where is KITT and Mike and Sarah," I asked perplexed.

"They will meet you at Justin's house," she answered.

"Did my father build you," I asked.

"Yes, he and Dr. Graiman helped put me together," she answered.

"How come I was never told about it," I asked.

"It was top secret, but now that you are older and your parents are no longer alive, I am yours to do with what you wish," she told me.

"So you are my car now," I asked.

"That is correct," she said.

"Then when we get to Justin's house you will go back with Mike and Sarah and be a part of
their team because I honestly don't want you," I said.

"If that is what you want then I will do that," she said.

"Good," I mumbled.

I didn't need some super hi-tech car that was given to me by my parents. I was already rather rich because I was given their settlements if either of them died, and because they both died I got both of them plus an extra three million because apparently my father was very high up with the government and they felt pity towards me. That extra three million went to many different charities because I sure as hell did not want pity money. If it was one thing I hated the most it was someone's pity for someone else's loss. I hated that the most because they clearly didn't understand pain and grief very well. The car drove silently towards New Hampshire. When we got to Justin's house I saw the Mustang parked next Justin's car that looked totaled. I grew worried so I threw open the door and ran towards the house.

"Justin, Justin," I screamed running through the door.

"What, what is it," he said coming in from the kitchen.

"What the hell happened to your car," I demanded angrily.

"Well, I wrapped it around a pole and managed to get out alive," he laughed.

"You think this is funny," I asked outraged.

"A little," he mumbled.

"Why," I asked.

"Because I was being stupid when it happened," he admitted sheepishly kicking his foot at
the floor.

"Being stupid how," I asked.

"I was fooling around with the stereo," he answered.

"Justin do you realize that you could have killed yourself," I asked incredulous at his calm
demeanor.

"Yes I do realize that, but I didn't kill myself," he said defensively.

"So this is little Rhiannon," a male voice said suddenly.

I whipped my head around to see a man standing there next to a female. The man was tall, muscular, but not as muscular as my Emmett. His hair was between blonde and brown, but more blonde. He had a tattoo of something that looked like it had to do with the military was on the inside of one of his forearms. He had a sort of look to his brownish-black eyes that said he had seen a whole hell of a lot of pain, action, and stress. The female was slightly shorter than the male. Her hair was a dark brunette color with a medium natural curl to it. Her shocking bright blue eyes seemed as if she had just gotten over some grief and pain of her own and my heart reached out to her for it. She also looked to appear rather fit and athletic.

"Who the hell are you two," I asked rather rudely.

"Ouch, all grown up and rather feisty," the male joked.

"Again, who are you," I asked.

"You don't remember us," the female asked.

I shook my head no as an answer to her question.

"Mike and Sarah Knight," she clarified.

Recognition then sparked in my brain. Mike and grown a lit older and Sarah looked older to, but then again so was I. I ran into Mike's arms and he laughed as he swung me around in a tight hug. After he set me back down on my feet I hugged Sarah.

"Damn, it's been years," I said with a huge smile.

"Yeah I remember being forced to watch a little monster when I was a teenager," Mike said with a small snicker.

"She was not a little monster," Sarah defended me.

"It's alright Sarah, but he's right I was a little monster. I remember that I always got into everything that I could get my hands on," I said grinning.

"How have you been Rhia," she asked.

"I've been good. My boyfriend's family adopted me after my uncle was put in jail," I said.

"Your boyfriend's family," Mike said raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah do you have a problem with that," I asked defensively.

"No, not all, I just was thinking that it was a little too soon to be living with him," he said.

"Mike, he helped me when I needed it the most. It was way before Justin came to find me
and after my aunt was murdered by him. He abused me; he raped me on my eighteenth
birthday and left me to bleed everywhere. I barely managed to make it to the trees of the forest surrounding his house when my friend Leah took me to see Emmett who rushed me to the hospital. I almost wasn't able to graduate because I was forced to stay out for six weeks at recommendation of the doctor who treated me," I said my voice escalating to a higher pitch as I told them everything that happened to me over the past months of my time
in Salem.

"Rhia how come you didn't contact us," Sarah asked sounding all concerned now.

"Because I had no way of contacting you and the minute my aunt had found out that my parents were gone she told me to come to Salem and live with her. If she was the reason that I was getting abused than damn that was really low. I watched as my uncle murdered my aunt. I filmed it so he couldn't get acquitted at his trial. It's my word against his, but I have evidence that he did it. In fact Emmett's brother Edward is my attorney for this and he's done nothing but help and support me through this entire thing, like a brother almost," I said.

"If you want to come and live with us in Washington after Graduation you are more than welcome to," Mike offered.

"I can't right after I graduate, I have to attend the trial and watch my uncle get convicted and be put on death row or get life in prison," I explained.

"Would you like us to stay and give you support," they both asked.

"If you want to you can, but you don't have to," I said.

"Rhia, we should have been there for you when your parents died. We got held up with some important business and by the time we went to California to retrieve you to live with us you had already gone," Sarah said.

"I heard from their attorney that I was supposed to live with you and not my aunt and uncle, why though," I asked.

"Your parents trusted us over any family member even step siblings that your dad had," Mike answered.

"Did I ever hate being watched by you when I was younger," I asked them.

"No you always had fun with us," they both said.

"If I had known how to contact you guys I would have, you know that right," I said.

"Yes we do. KITT actually helped us track you down," Mike said.

"Really, how so," I asked.

"The locket that you are wearing," he said.

"Justin gave it to Maria, who gave it to me," I said.

"Yeah, but did he tell you that there was a tracker in it," he asked.

"Yeah he did, so I guess that's probably what KITT locked onto right," I said.

"You catch on fast," he said with a grin.

We went into the living room and just talked. Sarah told me that HITT was really my car that my father had worked on tirelessly in order to give it to me as a high school graduation present. He went through dozens of models until he settled on the three thousand one that was parked outside right now. Sarah had told me that her father had to finish the last minute glitches in the three thousand model because my father had died before he could finish it. She also told me that her father had recently died in an accident, which is why they hadn't come to visit sooner. I cried at that information even though I didn't remember Dr. Graiman all that well.

Mike had told me all about his time in the military service and how he had lost his memory, but just recently realized why his memory had been missing for some time was because the government had decided it was for the best that it was erased. When he told me that I admit that I grew angry because no one deserved to have their memories wiped from them because they think that it's for the best. It's just plain wrong in my opinion. I noticed that when I was talking with Mike and Sarah that Justin was just sitting quietly in the corner with a look on his face that said he was hiding something. When I looked at the clock in the corner of the room I realized that it was late and I was tired so I couldn't really ask him on that.

"Sorry to cut this conversation a little short, but I'm tired so I'm going to bed and I hope to see you in the morning," I said giving everyone a hug good night.

That night I had another one of my nightmares or rather blackouts while I was sleeping. I did everything I could to keep myself from making any noise and I hoped it worked because no one seemed to come into my room that night to see if I was alright. When I woke up from it I had tears in my eyes because it was about Justin again. This one also showed him dead, but in a different way. The other two times that I saw him dead it was because of different reasons.

One was because a plane crashed and there were no survivors, the second was because he jumped in front of a bullet aimed at me, and this latest one seemed as if it was really going to happen. It showed him dying in a fatal car accident like my parents. I was truly scared for my brother's life, but I didn't know how I could save him or if I could save him. I lay in bed watching the ceiling hoping that I would fall asleep without any more nightmares or blackouts supposedly predicting the future. It didn't occur to me though that someone was watching me and that someone didn't like the fact that I was a special person and they were going to do everything they could to stop me.

Justin's POV

After Rhiannon went to bed I heaved a sigh. I didn't know how much longer I could keep lying to her and saying that I was her older brother who walked out of our parents' lives when I was seventeen. I barely knew Emma and Ryan Hart only what Mike and Sarah told me about them.

"How much longer do I have to keep lying to her," I asked them when I knew the coast was clear.

"Justin I know you don't like lying to her, but it's for the best," Sarah said.

"Why though," I asked.

"Because it is the only way we can keep Kyle in prison for life," Mike said.

"What do you mean," I asked.

"I mean that Kyle wasn't always so abusive, but when he met Maria something in him must have snapped. I don't know what, but I know something did. He started abusing her first, but then when Rhiannon's parents died and she didn't know that we were to take care of her she went and lived with her aunt, which in the end made her the biggest target instead,"
Mike answered.

"How do you know that Kyle wasn't always so abusive," I wondered.

"I don't know exactly, but from what KITT has told me he didn't always be this way," Mike explained.

"Why did you recruit me of all people to lie to Rhiannon," I asked.

"You looked like the son of Emma Hart," Sarah said.

"How is that possible, my mother's name is Annabelle Corday," I said.

"We know that, but when we pulled up your photo and placed it next to Emma Hart's photo we were shocked to see that you looked so similar that we had to put you in for the job as her long lost half-brother," Mike said.

"I can't keep lying to her like this though," I said.

"We understand that, but until Kyle goes to prison you have to," Sarah said.

"How much longer is that," I demanded.

"Well, according to what Rhia said not much. The trial is set for next week," Mike said.

"What exactly is your whole role in this," I asked.

"We can't exactly tell you because if we do then the government is going to have our heads," Mike spoke for the both of them.

I heaved a sigh and then went into the master suite to go to bed. I needed time to think about how I would continue this fake life I agreed to do. It was awkward to lie to someone, but for it to come so easily scared me because it made me question how I was actually raised as a child. I went to bed that night tossing in turning from the memories of my childhood.
