So Close Yet So Far

"I'm bored," Ramona states to her boyfriend over a casual phone conversation in late February.

"Really?" he jokes.

"No, I just said that so you'd sing to me."

"Sing to you?"

"Yeah, you have good voice babe, so sing."

"Haha, I'm not a performing monkey in heels."

"I know you're not."

"Fine, what'll it be?" he says rolling his eyes.

"Hmm something by Good Charlotte."

"Why them?"

"I dunno." She shrugs.

"Uhh okay then." He clears his throat, "If you want me to wait, I would wait for you, if you tell me to stay, I would stay right through, if you don't wanna say anything at all, I'm happy wondering."

"Thanks," Ramona says sweetly.

"I'm not done," Joey teases, "now my life is changing, it's always rearranging, its always getting stranger than I thought it ever could, ever since I found you, I wanna be around you, I wanna to get down to the point that I need you, cause everybody, Woah, needs someone that they can trust and you're somebody, Woah, that I found just in time."

"You're cute."

"I prefer the term dead sexy, but I'll take what I can get."

"Yeah, true," she snickers. "Hold on a got another line."

"I'll be missing you," he jokes.

"I'm sure." She presses the button for the other line, "Hello?"

"Ramona."

"Yup."

"It's Stella."

"Heya what's up?"

"I broke up with Jakob." Ramona can't help but let out a laugh.

"Again?"

"Yeah, he was being all jerky and immature lately."

"Can I call you back?"

"Yeah I guess." She sighs as she hangs up. Ramona switches back to Joey.

"Who was it?" he asks casually.

"Stella. Apparently she and your brother broke up again."

"Uhh news to me," suddenly Joey hears the front door slam, "No wait, he just got home and he's pissed."

"According to Stella he's been acting all jerky and immature."

"Hmm, like that doesn't sound like him at all," he says sarcastically.

"Who are you on the phone with?" Jakob demands.

"Umm, the Dalai Lama."

"Fuck face."

"With Ramona!" he scowls, "So you and Stella broke up." He nods. "What happened?"

"I may have sort of ditched her to go boarding with my friends."

"Loser," Joey says going back to talking to Ramona.

"That's him?" she asks casually.

"Yup, did you hear what happened?"

"Yeah," she says laughing, "That sounds so like them, Stella's clinginess and Jake's oblivious attitude."

"Ow!" Joey yelps as his brother kicks him in the shin.

"What happened?"

"Little brat kicked me!"

"I don't think he counts as little anymore, he's the same height as you."

"Shut-up. It's force of habit," he mumbles.

"Hey it's your birthday next week."

"Yeah."

"What do you want?"

"Panty hose." He snickers.

"Seriously?"

"No, seriously I want you."

"Me? In what sense?"

"Not sure," he says slightly embarrassed. "You don't have to give me anything."
"Yeah I do, you gave me an awesome birthday present."

-Meanwhile-

"What's up boy-o?" Billie asks as Jakob slumps on the couch next to him.

"Fucked up again."

"And how's that."

"Messed things up with Stella."

"Ahh, okay then." He laughs to himself, "How'd you manage to that?"

"Clark and Steve were going to the skate park after school and I sort of ditched Stella to go with them."

"What do you mean ditched?"

"Well we were hanging out by the soccer field and then Clark and Steve came up to me and asked me if I wanted to go. I was supposed to go over to her house and well I went with the guys."

"So she broke up with you?" Jakob nods.

"She pulled me aside and said it was either her or them. And I chose them."
Billie Joe can't help but burst out laughing.

"Did she mean choose in general or choose for today?"

"I think today." His father hits another laughing fit, "I didn't want to be whipped! And I don't make good decisions when I'm stressed."

"Oh jeebus Jakob, you can be really hard headed sometimes."

"So what do I do?"

"Well if you miss her, then apologize, and if you don't miss her apologize and stay friends."

"So you're saying I have to apologize either way?"

"Uhh yeah," Billie snickers.

"Not today," he mumbles as he turns to stare at the television.

"Yeah well don't take too long, I don't want Mike riding my ass for you breaking her heart."

"Breaking her heart?" Jakob snorts, "She dumped me!"

"Because you fucked up." Jakob let's out a sigh of aggravation. "Hey, I don't make these things up."

"Yeah, I know," he says as he slinks off to his room.
