Carpe Noctum, Seize the Night

Rescue me

Maggy's PoV

A few days later I decide to take an evening walk through New Orleans to both clear my mind and to think of a next step in my investigation of Aaron’s murder. David had calmed down after he had caught Lestat, Louis, Merrick and me sneaking into Lestat’s mansion after we had broken into the Motherhouse of the Talamasca and after lots of discussion he had accepted that we couldn’t mourn Aaron properly without knowing who had killed him and why.

Deep in thought, I don’t pay a lot of attention to the people around me, when I suddenly feel a sharp pain in the back of my head and a moment later, everything goes black.

The moment I regain my conscious, I’m vaguely aware that I’m being dragged towards a car. That’s when I hear a familiar voice scream at, I assume, my attackers before blacking out again.

When I wake up the second time, I feel a little better. I realize someone is carrying me and in my dazed state I feel safe, until I look down and see nothing but rooftops, toy cars and tiny moving dots.

“Relax, I won’t drop you,” a voice calms me down.

The first thing I notice when I look up to see the face of my rescuer, is a mass of blond curls that seem to glow in the pale moonlight.

“Lestat, what happened?”

“You almost got yourself kidnapped. Don’t you know it’s dangerous for a woman to wander around late at night. You’re lucky I saw you.”

Judging by the harsh tone of his voice and the lack of his usual pet name ‘my cherie’ I know he’s worried about me and angry at me because of my stupidity at the same time.

“I know it was stupid of me, I should have paid more attention. Thanks for saving my ass.”

I hesitate a little before giving him a kiss on his cheek to show him my appreciation and I see his features soften a little .

“Why do you wander around at this time of the night anyway?” Lestat asks after a moment of silence, unable to hide his curiosity.

I shrug. “Don’t ask why but I’ve always felt more alive and awake during the evening and the night. I like taking a walk during these hours, it always helps me to think and reflect on things.”

“As much as I obviously can relate to that, I still think you should be more careful. David has a good reason to be concerned about your safety because if Aaron is killed because of his knowledge, there’s a big chance his murderers know how close you two were and think you know too much to stay alive too.”

I know Lestat is right but letting go of the desire for both the truth as well as vengeance isn’t easy.’

“You’re going to stop playing Sherlock Holmes right now!”

This time, it isn’t David who’s yelling at me, it’s Lestat.

“You almost got yourself kidnapped yesterday! I know it means a lot to you but you could have been as Aaron right now if I hadn’t saved you! Do you want to die?! Because in that case, there are 5 vampires who would help you in a heartbeat!”

Lestat lets out a frustrated sigh before walking away. Louis, who had been reading a book in the corner before and during our argument, pets me on my back as a comforting gesture, before following Lestat.
