Gold, Guns, Girls

Chapter Two.

You'd think there would be nothing worse than being alone on the night of the school dance. That there could be nothing worse than having to be home, watching sad movies by yourself while everyone else was out having a good time. Before, Olivia Stewart would have agreed with you, for she had never had to spend one of those nights alone. But the day she had lost her date to the school dance to the hottest girl at the school, she had learned there is worse things than being alone.

She was supposed to go with Cameron. The two had attended every single school dance together since the seventh grade, and this one was supposed to be no different. She had even gone out and spent the last of her babysitting money on a lavender dress that matched his ridiculous bow tie. All that didn't seem to mean anything though, because he dropped her the second Heather Cronkwright showed interest in him. He didn't even apologize about it. He didn't even acknowledge the fact that he was leaving her after he had asked her to the dance.

But that wasn't even the worst part. Olivia wasn't about to attend the dance alone, so she was stuck at home. She was planning on just watching movies with her Mother until she fell asleep that night, but as she was changing into her pajamas, she got a phone call. She was to spend her evening helping her former date get ready for his date with another girl. She wanted to tell him no, and that he was stupid for even thinking that she would want to do that, but she couldn't. Though sometimes, Cameron Holmes was the biggest asshole in the world, he would always be her best friend. And right at that moment, he needed her, and though he needed her to help him win the heart of another girl, he still needed her. She was going to enjoy being needed while it lasted, because she knew it wasn't going to last very long.

Olivia sighed as she adjusted the lapel of his simple, black blazer jacket. She had no doubt in her mind that it had originally belonged to Cameron's Father, and that he had left it behind when he fled. Cameron wore seemingly every article of clothing that his Father hadn't brought with him, besides his underwear or the odd sock. She wasn't exactly sure why he did that, or how he could even stand to be reminded of that man. He had left them all those years ago for a younger woman, and yet, there was no hatred to resentment toward him. He loved his Father just as much as he had before he left.

"What do you think?" Cameron asked, gesturing to his clothing. "Do I look funny?"

Olivia's eyes scanned him up and down; from his hair down to his Father's old, slip-on leather shoes. Cameron wore tighter jeans then most of the guys in their grade, Olivia had noticed. Not quite as tight as the 'emo' boys, but much tighter than what the jock boys wore. To her, Cameron kind of looked like a rock star, though she knew he never would be. Cameron never took music lessons when he was younger, so he wasn't at all musically inclined. She was also pretty sure that it was too late for him to start trying to play an instrument, but she had never actually tried, so she didn't know.

"You don't look funny." Olivia concluded, watching him as he grabbed his aviator sunglasses off of his desk and slipped them into the breast pocket of his coat.

He grinned widely at her, showing off his almost-perfect smile--A result of not wearing his retainer for that few months after he had his braces removed in ninth grade--And he placed both his hands on Olivia's waist. "Thank you for helping me get ready, babe. You're the best."

Olivia was sure he noticed the way she melted at the use of the simple pet name, but he chose not to point it out. She couldn't help it. Though he was her best friend, she could admit that Cameron was a very attractive boy. And she's always thought he had a really sexy tone to his voice. He also always had a really attractive half-smile whenever he spoke to her. She just couldn't help but to feel strange things whenever he'd call her baby, or put his hands on her waist.

Olivia merely smiled in reply, for she was interrupted by the doorbell before she could even speak. She furrowed her eyebrows, watching as Cameron moved his hands from her body and took a step back. The grin on his face was one of the widest she'd seen on him in a while, and she couldn't help but to wish that it was her that was making her smile like that.

"My date's here." He said.

"You made her pick you up?" Olivia asked. "Aren't you supposed to be picking her up?"

"Well, I don't have a car." He laughed. "And, what can I say? Heather's not your average girl."

"I guess not." She mumbled, looking down at her feet.

"Stay here until I come back." He said, quickly pressing his lips to his cheek. "I want to tell you all about my night. Bye Liv!"

Olivia sighed, only looking up once she heard his door click shut. Cameron Holmes was an idiot.

I have the characters page, but the pictures are pretty small.
If any of you are interested in seeing what they look like more up close, I'll post the links to their pictures in the memo for the next chapter or something.
