Romance of a Rock Band

I was in the driveway working on the car when I happened to look up and see the Norman’s
car come by. Tony was driving with someone else in the passenger side. I couldn’t see
them very well because they were hiding behind a bag. I thought it might have been
Monique. I waved to them. He waved back and I went back to my car. It had been making a
whistling noise for about a week now and I had to see what it was.

Tony was a nice man. He lived at the other end of the street from me. He’s the one who
taught me about cars when m dad wasn’t around. He’s the only neighbor that let me call
him by his first name. In some ways he had been a father to me.

I looked at the car for about half an hour and found nothing so I decided to go to see
Tony and ask for help. I walked to his house and rang the doorbell.

“Hey, Felix. What’s up?” he said opening the door.

“Could you come and look at my car? It’s making a whistling noise," I said.

“Sure, just a second, okay?”He said turning back inside. “Hey Annie, I’m going to leave for a
little while, okay? If you need me for anything I’ll be down the street.” He came out and shut
the door behind him.

“Annie?” I said.

“Yeah. You remember I told you we were going to adopt a girl? She just moved in today.
Come back with me when we’re done here and you can meet her,” he said.

“Okay,” I said and we went to work on my car. He looked at it for about five minutes and then
he did something inside.

“Okay, you’re good to go. If it happens again then just flip that little thing there,” he said
pointing to a little metal piece.

“Thanks,” I said.

“Now, let’s go see Annie,” he said walking back towards his house.

“Okay,” I said, following him. “How old is she?”

“Sixteen,” he said.

“Oh. I thought she was a little kid.” I said.

“No, Monique wanted an older girl so she wouldn’t have to change diapers and that kind of
stuff so we brought her home,” he answered.

“That the only reason?” I asked.

“Well that and she’s not human," he answered.

“Oh. So she’s like you then?” I said.

“No, she’s not. She’s really different,” he answered.

“What is she?” I asked.

“I don’t really know. I think she’s a dragon, but something else seems different,” he said.

“What?” I asked.

“I don’t know yet. We’re going to ask her tonight,” he said.

“That should be interesting,” I said. We walked up the steps, onto his porch.

“Come on in,” he told me walking through the door. I followed him in.

“Annie!” he called. “Coming!” I heard and a few second later Monique came down the stairs
and behind her, a teenage girl.

She was one of the oddest girls I’ve ever seen. She was tall and thin. She had brilliant
green hair, but the weirdest thing about her was her eyes. One eye was blue and the other
was green. I stared for a second. She stared right back.

“Annie, this is Felix. He lives down the street. Felix, Annie,” said Tony.

She smiled. “Hi.”

“Hello,” I said back smiling back at her. My watch beeped. “I gotta go ‘cause it’s 3:00.
Band practice.”

“You have a band?” she asked looking interested.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Like a rock band?” she asked.

“Yep,” I said.

“What do you play?” he asked.

“Drums,” I answered. “Do you play something?”

“Yeah. Electric guitar,” she said.

“Are you serious?” I said.

“Yeah…” she said shyly, like she was suspicious of what would happen next.

“Do you want to come with me? To practice I mean,” I asked her.

“Well—“ she started.

“Not today, Felix. She still has some stuff to do here,” Tony interrupted.

“Oh. That’s okay,” I said. She looked a little disappointed. “We have another one in a couple

days. Do you want to come then?”

“Sure!” she said. She looked pretty happy. I smiled. We might finally have a whole band!

“Okay. I’ll be over Tuesday afternoon. I have to go now, though,” I said.

“See ya later, Felix,” said Tony.

“Bye, Felix,” said Monique. Annie just waved.

“Bye,” I said and I walked out the door and back to my driveway. I hope this works.

I thought as I got into the car. I hope Hawk likes her. And I got in my car and drove to his
house.
