You feel as though your stomach has fallen to your feet as you look upon the gap that separates you from freedom. It was a deep chasm, a small abyss that would engulf you if you didn’t jump far enough.
You knew that the jump was too risky to try, but time was running out.

You were about to turn back to find another route to your destination, only to be stopped by the sight of floating embers grazing across the night sky. They were right below you.

You closed your eyes, and tried to fight your desperation. Would you rather die from a fall, or by their hands? Your impulsive demeanor consumed you for a moment. The answer was clear.

Knowing you didn’t have much time to make a sufficient decision, you took a deep breath and leaped across the opening, chest pounding as if a maddened alpha male gorilla was beating it.

You performed a somersault as soon as you landed, breaking your fall. Not hesitating, you ran, your feet getting a mind of their own.

Panting, your running soon turned to sprints, tears falling from your eyes as you knew that your body would not be able to keep up such a rapid speed, and that they would soon find you.

You ignored your burning muscles and ran faster, hoping that your lover escaped them as well. Thinking about her encouraged you to go on; you thought about her face, telling yourself that if you continued running, you would see it again soon.

You soon stopped, holding onto a tree to keep your balance. You tried to concentrate on your breathing, as well as listen to the sounds of the forest.

You hear the call of an owl, and a faint chirp of a cricket; the shouts of your pursuers were out of earshot.

You let out a breath, and sat down on the ground, relieved that you'd escaped them for now.
