The sound of heavy footsteps could be heard above her head as she sat in the corner of the basement. They louder they got, the closer they seemed to be coming and then they stopped. The door at the top of the stairs opened flooding the basement with light.

Two men descended the stairs making her shake with fear. It wasn’t the same two men who had brought her down to the basement. These two looked way more dangerous.
The bigger one grabbed a chair and set it down in front of her backwards and straddled it. The other stood behind him and cracked his knuckles.

“This is my house and I heard you liked it so much that you tried to break in.” He held his finger up and waived it in front of her face. “That’s a no no, little girl.” Her eyes grew wider when he rose from the chair and grabbed her by the arm. He yanked her up off the floor as hard as he could and held her arm tightly in his hand.

“Why the fuck were you trying to break into my house?” She was too scared to answer. He slapped her across the face and if he wasn’t holding onto her arm she would have fell backwards. As the blood trickled down her lip, he asked her again. “I want an answer this time. Why the fuck were you trying to break into my house?”

“I…I ..w-was looking for my friend”

“Your friend? If you had friends here, you would have rang the fucking door bell!” Shadows had lost all his patience and slapped her again.

“Vengeance, is this girl a friend of yours?”

“No.” He answered glaring at her like he was going to rip her head off.

“We know that she isn’t a friend of Christ or The Rev or they wouldn’t have put her down here. I’m pretty sure, Gates doesn’t know you either. So, the way I see it, you have no friends here, so I’ll ask you again, why the fuck were you trying to break into my house?”

“I told you, I was looking for my friend.” She cried.

“Vengeance, I’m going to leave. You know what to do.”

“Yes.” He nodded with a sinister grin on his face. “When I come back, you better be ready to tell me the truth.” Shadows shoved the girl over to Vengeance and walked back up the staircase. The poor girl had no idea what she was in for with Vengeance.

I wanted to get back to Izzy. On the drive back to the penthouse, my conscience attacked me. I could deal with the little problem in the basement tomorrow, Izzy was more important.

When I walked into the casino I saw Gates sitting at the bar and nodded towards him as I passed. That was another issue that would have to be dealt with and soon. When the door to the elevator opened, Ruby was about to step out. Might as well deal with the problem while it was still in front of me. “You!” I said pointing my finger at her as I stood blocking her from getting out. “Gates is sitting in the bar by himself and if you aren’t in there in five minutes falling all over him like a love sick teenager, I swear to God, I will come and find you and you don’t want me to have to come and find you. Get it?”

Her mouth was open, but not a word came out. When she nodded her head, I moved out of the way and let her pass. As soon as the elevator door closed, I laughed. This was fun sometimes. Gates better thank me later.

When I got to the penthouse, I was sure I would find Izzy where I left her on the couch. She took my advice instead and from where I stood, I could see her relaxing in the hot tub. Low and behold, she wasn’t alone. I guess she found a way to make up the last three weeks to me in one night and who the hell was I to stand there and watch when I could go out there and play too?

After sliding the glass door open, I stepped out onto the terrace and walked over to the hot tub and sat down on the ledge. Izzy leaned her head back into my lap and looked up at me. “Chelsea’s here.” She smiled.

“I see that.” I grinned back and leaned down to kiss her.

“Come play.” She whispered against my lips.

“I will, give me a minute, I’ll be right back.”

So, I guess this was going to be a good night after all. I went to the bedroom to get out of my jeans and put on a pair of shorts. Not that it was going to matter because they weren’t going to be on for very long anyway. I could hear Izzy laugh and it put a smile on my face. It had been so long since I heard that sound. Hell, it’s been so long since I heard any of her sounds and tonight, I was sure to hear them all.

On my way back to the hot tub, I stopped at the fridge and took out a bottle. I grabbed three glasses and walked back through the sliding glass door that led out to the terrace.
While Izzy and Chelsea were in the hot tub amusing themselves, I poured three glasses and then sat on the ledge of the hot tub. After handing each of them a glass, I swung my legs over the side into the hot water. There I sat with two naked girls, a bottle of bubbly and a hot tub. Yeah, this was going to be a good night. I could only hope that Gates was just as lucky.

I sat at the bar alone with a beer wrapped up in some random conversation with London when I noticed her eyes leave mine and look elsewhere. When she smiled, I turned around to see what it was she was looking at.

Ruby was walking towards the bar. She wore a pair of ripped jeans and a t-shirt, with hardly any make up on at all. When she sat down at the bar, she left a stool between us and seemed to act as if she hadn’t noticed me sitting there. I didn’t know if she was just being shy or ignoring me on purpose. London brought her a drink and walked away.

For about a minute nothing was said. I couldn’t think of an icebreaker to start a conversation with her, but I really wanted to. Instead I sat there playing with the label on the beer bottle in front of me.

“Excuse me?” I lifted my head when I heard the little voice coming from the left of me and looked at her. “Is that seat taken?” She asked pointing to the stool that sat between us. I smiled and shook my head no and she slid over onto the stool beside me. “I’m sorry, you’ll have to forgive my nervousness, I’ve never done this before. I don’t know any fancy pick up lines other than can I buy you a drink so, can I buy you a drink?” Now that was adorable!

“Sure.” I nodded and she waved London over.

“I’d like another and give him one of whatever he’s having.” London smiled and winked at Ruby. “So, do you come here often?” She asked me and I laughed.

“On occasion, yes.” I nodded. “How about you?”

“Oh no, I’m new in town.” She smiled and took a sip of her drink.

I picked up my beer and turned sideways in my stool so I was facing her. “So, does the pretty stranger have a name?”

She turned her head and looked around the room. “What pretty stranger?” I closed my eyes and bit my bottom lip. I forgot how simple she was sometimes.

“You, silly.”

“Oh, yes, of course I have a name.” I wanted to bite her right then and there. Was that wrong?

“Well, what is it?”

“Kristina.” Her cheeks started to blush pink as she said her name and it was the most beautiful sentiment. I was so proud of her.

The grin spread across my face when she smiled at me. “I’m Brian.”

I loved this, there was something so naïve about her, and yet, I thought I knew everything there was to know. Maybe I knew everything there was to know about Ruby, but Kristina was someone I had yet to get to know. I think I loved her from the moment she sat down.

“So, Kristina. What do you do?” I could play along with her. This was probably the best idea she’s ever had. No egos, no tension, just two people having a drink and getting to know each other.

“Well, I work as a personal assistant for now, but I’m going to have to switch to part time, because I really want to go to college.” That was news to me, but good for her!

“Wow, do you think your boss will be ok with that?”

She shrugged. “It’s my life and my decision and if he’s not ok with it then I guess I can find a part time job somewhere else.”

I raised an eyebrow before answering her. “I like a girl who takes control of her own destiny. Good for you!”

London came over and stood in front of us and we both turned our attention to the two of us. “Sorry to interrupt, but its last call and I really have to clean up the bar.” She winked at me and I knew she was full of shit, but she would get one hell of tip for that little bit of help.

“Well, I guess that’s my cue to leave” Kristina stood up from her stool and picked up her purse.

“Can I walk you home?”

“I think that would be nice.” She smiled at me and after leaving London a big tip; I got up off the stool and held out my arm. When she took it, I led her to the elevator and we went up to our floor. We stopped outside her bedroom door and she looked up at me.

“Well, this is home for me.” She stood there with her hands in her pockets and looked up at me.

“You know, I’m not really tired yet. I was going to watch a movie. Want to join me?”

She shrugged her shoulders and laughed. “Sure, why not?”

We walked into the living room and she sat down on the couch. “I’ll be right back; I’m going to go grab a movie from the dvd library. Make yourself at home.”

When I walked into my den, I searched through every movie I had looking for the longest movie I could find. I wanted to prolong this night for as long as I could. I settled for The Godfather and walked back out to the living room.

There were pillows all over the floor and blankets too. Kristina sat in the middle with her shoes off, waiting for me to join her. “Well, what did you do to my living room?” I asked kneeling down in front of her.

“Haven’t you ever thrown all the couch pillows on the floor and stayed up all night?”

I shook my head and looked at her sweet face. “No, I can honestly say this will be a first for me.” She laughed and I crawled over to the dvd player and popped in the movie.

After taking off my own shoes, I moved back over to where she was sitting and got comfortable. We watched in silence for a little while and when I laid back and put my arms behind my head she laid down too and rested her head on my stomach. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night. After the first hour of the movie she lifted her head and looked at me. “Are you in the mafia?”

My stomach rumbled with laughter and she moved up to where I was and lay on her stomach with her head looking down at me. “Why are you laughing?”

“No, I’m not in the mafia, but I could see how you would come to that conclusion.”

“You have a gun.” She said curiously as she rested her chin on her hands.

“I have many.” I nodded.

She stared at me for a little bit before speaking again. “I don’t like guns.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. Maybe The Godfather wasn’t the best choice of movies given the circumstances. She turned on to her back when I sat up and turned the movie off. It was completely dark now and I laid back down beside her on my side propped up on one elbow. The only light was the little glow that came from the cigarette that I had just lit. “So what do you like?”

I smoked my cigarette and listened intently as she spoke. “I like the color red and I like shoes. I like bubble baths and thunder storms and … I couldn’t control myself anymore, I had to do it. While she continued to tell me all the things that she liked, I felt around for the ash tray and put out my cigarette. “I like books, but not the ones with pictures, the real chapter ones. I like frogs and turtles and… I never heard what came out of her mouth next because I covered it with my own and kissed her.

“What else?” I whispered against her lips.

“I like the color red”

“You said that already” I whispered and kissed her again. She seemed to be forgetting herself and I liked it.

“I like… She started to say, but I kissed her a little more intensely.

“What?” I asked her when I pulled my lips away from her.

“I love you,” she whispered clear enough for me to hear. Granted many girls have said those very same words to me, but this was the one girl that I actually believed meant it. I didn’t stop her when her hands moved down to the end of my shirt and started to slide it upwards. Instead, I sat up and removed it myself. Don’t fuck this up Haner.
When I brought myself back down to her, I rested my hand on her stomach and kissed her again. Her tongue slipped past my lips as my hand moved under her shirt. She whimpered as my thumb traced over the scar where she was shot. Breaking the kiss, I lifted her shirt over her head and when it was off, she grabbed my neck and pulled me back down to her. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to my room?” I asked wanting to make sure she was as comfortable as possible.

“I’m sure.” She whispered and just a few minutes later the two of us were rid of our clothing. This wasn’t Ruby, this was real and with every kiss we shared and every touch we felt, it meant something more than just sex. Ruby would never have let me be in control, but Kristina did and being inside her, was like being with her for the first time.

Every sound she made and every move was genuine. So much so that I wanted this to last all night, but there was too much pent up sexual tension between the two of us for that to happen. After we’d both reached that euphoric point that had eluded us for so long, I stayed inside her kissing her lips as softly as I could. We laid there covered in sweat, tangled in each other’s bodies stealing passionate kisses from each other for a long time after the most intimate moment that we had just shared. There was no point in holding it back any more. My finger traced her jaw line and now it was me who whispered against her lips. “I love you.” She smiled against my lips and we continued to kiss until the two of us had exhausted ourselves to sleep.

Shadows walked out of the elevator onto Gates’ floor and headed into his place. Last night didn’t end until a few hours ago and he really didn’t want to leave Izzy, but there was still the little matter that needed to be dealt with at the mansion.

When he walked into the living room and saw the sight before him, he couldn’t help but shake his head. He knelt down beside the two people sleeping in a mess of pillows and blankets on the living room floor and put his hand on Gates shoulder giving him a light shake.

Gates snapped his eyes open and he looked at Shadows annoyed. Shadows didn’t say anything he just nodded towards Gates office and when Gates nodded back, Shadows got up and walked to the office to wait for his friend.

Kristina was sound a sleep and Gates gently pulled his arm out from under her, careful not to wake her up. With the sleep now out of his eyes, he was able to sit up and focus. After finding his boxers, he put them on and went into the office where he found Shadows standing in front of the window.

“Do you know what time it is?” Gates asked clearly annoyed.

“Yeah, it’s almost 2pm”

“What?” Gates glanced over at the clock and sure enough Shadows was right. “Damn” There was no telling what time he and Kristina had fallen asleep, but to him, it felt like it was just a minute ago.

“We have a problem.” Shadows sat down on the window sill and looked at Gates.

“Ok, I’m tired and don’t really feel the need for the whole dramatic effect you have going on so just cut to the chase.”

Shadows raised his eyebrow at his friend who was clearly pissed off that he was awakened. “Well, the chic in the basement said she was trying to break in because she was looking for her friend. Neither Vengeance, nor I, know who she is and Christ and The Rev don’t know who she is, so that leaves you.”

“Me? You think I know this girl?”

Shadows shrugged and held up his hands. “I don’t know, but we need to rule you out before we can figure out what to do with her.”

“Ok, give me like 15 minutes and I’ll meet you downstairs.”

Shadows nodded and headed downstairs. Gates quickly got dressed and went back to the living room to where Kristina was sleeping. He knelt down and pressed his lips to her shoulder. “Baby.” He whispered and got a groan from her in return.
“Kristina, look at me.”

She turned on to her back and brought her hands up to her eyes to wipe them. She yawned when she looked at him with weary eyes. “I have to go out for a little while.”

“After last night, you’re leaving me?”

He sighed knowing it wasn’t fair. “I’m sorry, it’s important and I can’t get out of it, but I promise, I’ll make it up to you.” She nodded, but the disappointment was written all over her face. He leaned forward and kissed her before getting back up and leaving her there alone.

Once down stairs he and Shadows headed off to the mansion. Gates took his own car not wanting to be stuck there and have to wait for someone to drive him back. Together they walked through the door of the mansion and behind the spiral staircase.

When they got to the bottom of the stairs they found Vengeance standing there with grin on his face that could only be described as obscene. Shadows walked over to the girl who was lying on the floor covered in bruises. When he knelt down he grabbed a handful of her hair and lifted her face. Turning his gaze to Gates he spoke. “Ever see this girl before?”

“No” he shook his head after glancing at the girl lying on the floor. “And now I’m leaving.” Shadows nodded and Gates headed back up the stairs. The girl who had been whimpering as she lay there on the floor was trying to get up when Shadows pulled her by the hair up into a standing position.

“I am going to ask you one last time, why were you breaking into my house?”

After leaving her alone with Vengeance for the night, he was sure she would have been broken enough to tell the truth.

“I’m looking for my friend” she cried yet again. It was the same answer she had given him when he left her there alone with Vengeance to begin with.

“Apparently, Vengeance hasn’t gotten through to you yet.” He snickered and she shook her head pleading with her eyes as she looked at him. “Tell me, what is the name of this so called friend you came here looking for?”

When she caught her breath she answered in a whisper. “Bella.”
