Laura has always been strange. She constantly wears clashing colors, large glasses, and knitted hats that have nothing to do with the weather. She does enough work to get passing grades in school, and spends her time outside of her job at the library with her best friend, Sam. Together they are partners in crime, and once they get going, there's no stopping them.
Tom has lived in Laura's neighborhood for as long as he can remember. Every day during summer vacation, all of the kids on the block would come out and play kickball. That's what he remembers her the most from. It's not until the very end of their senior year that she starts to stand out.
