Since When Did Romeo Get a Hot Emo Brother?
Chapter Four
I awoke to the warmth of someone's arms around me. I opened my gray eyes and gazed into the night sky. That's when I wondered: How long had I been asleep?
I didn't want to get up. I felt whole... I allowed myself to look at whoever was with me.
"Zoe, are you alright?" Cody asked, his half covered blue eyes almost drawing the answer out of me.
"Fine." I whispered.
"Tell me the truth." That's when I know, no matter what, he could see right through me.
"Do you love me?"
"Don't avoid the question..."
I sat on his lap with my legs wrapped around his waist. "Do you?"
He looked down and hesitated for a moment. " I can't say I love anything or anyone since I don't know what love is... Including you..."
I moved. "Oh..." I searched my heart for some other reply, but none came.
"I'm sorry." He whispered. "I'm not great at explaining things..."
I looked him straight in the eyes, challenging him. "No, but you're great at breaking hearts."
"Zoe!" Cody called out to me but I was out of hearing. I started to stumble away from him, not wanting to hear how many other things he had said that were also a lie.
I needed my razor blade... I needed my pills.... They made me numb... empty... I felt dead. So much pain that it doesn't hurt anymore. If death comes let it take me. Only you can save me.
I ran in the middle of the street unsure of my destination. Tears flowed down my cheeks. I didn't care who saw me. I pushed myself, running faster. I thought, maybe if I ran fast enough, the pain wouldn't catch up.
It was a naive hope.
I cut down an alley to the back of a water tower. Maybe, I could just jump.
I hopped the fence and carefully climbed up the ladder. When I reached the top I looked around. My hands reached for my pockets and pulled out 8 aspirins and a small blade I'd taken off of an unused pencil sharpener.
I sat down, swallowing the pills. I held the razor up to the moon. I removed my black wristband and brought pain to my wrist. My silent tears mixed with my blood.
The razor blade was bloody and dripping in the moonlight. LIAR is now carved forever on my arm.
Pain doesn't hurt when it's all you've ever felt.
