It Wasn't Meant To Turn Out Like This

Reaction

Mayza hadn’t been sure what to expect when she told Brian the news. She’d been expecting a variety of optimistic reactions—excitement, happiness, a stuttered “I’m going to be a d-daddy?” followed by an enthusiastic embrace—and geared herself against a variety of negative reactions—panic, suggestions of abortion, and the like. She expected shock as well, but that could turn out either positive or negative.

Brian’s jaw dropped and he just stared at Mayza in complete and utter shock. She’d never seen his eyes so wide. She offered a weak smile in response as she slowly slipped off of his lap to kneel in the sand beside him. His eyes followed her movement, but he still seemed unable to overcome his shock.

“This morning, I saw a brown marking on my hip. It’s how fairies tell that they’re pregnant,” Mayza explained quietly. She reached out and rested her slight hand over Brian’s darker, larger one. Brian continued to stare at her. He had closed his mouth at least. “Brian, say something!”

Instead, Brian pulled his hand out from underneath Mayza’s and shoved himself to his feet. Mayza stood as well, brushing the sand off of her dress. Without a word, Brian turned and started walking back in the direction of the restaurant.

“Brian,” Mayza called out, stepping forward to follow him. “It’s a tough pill to swallow, but...” She trailed off as Brian just turned around, looked her straight in the eye, and shook his head. It was clear that he didn’t want her to follow him. Mayza stopped dead in her tracks, biting hard on her lip in an attempt to stem the tears threatening her makeup. Brian turned his back on Mayza and continued walking in the direction of the restaurant.

“It’s as much your fault as it is mine,” Mayza called out as the first tears splashed down her face. “You can’t...We have to...I’m not...I can’t do this alone!”

Brian ignored her, drudging on through the sand like he’d gone momentarily deaf. Mayza sighed, dragging her hand across her cheeks and willing herself to stop crying. As her hand fell away from her face, the diamonds of her fresh engagement ring sparkled in the moonlight. She didn’t even know where their relationship stood right now. Would Brian return to her in the morning, or would she step inside their front door to find all of her belongings boxed up and ready to move?

Mayza knew she couldn’t return home tonight. She didn’t want to see Brian, didn’t want to hear his explanation or his excuses, didn’t want to find out if the engagement was off.

She set off down the beach, unsure of where she’d go but knowing anywhere was better than here.

Mayza felt like she’d cried all her tears away by the time she stopped at Jimmy’s front door. But still, they kept coming, and no amount of ordering herself to stop, thinking happy thoughts that didn’t exist without Brian around, or telling herself the tears were gratuitous and silly could get them to stop coming. She’d chosen Jimmy’s house because it was closest and she knew he’d help her without a second thought.

It was getting late, but when Mayza knocked, she knew Jimmy would probably still be awake. She swept the side of her hand underneath both eyes, smearing away any excess tears. A few moments later, Mayza heard Jimmy muttering about late-night salesmen and desperate druggies as he neared the door. He opened the door looking about ready to deck the person standing there, but instantly relaxed upon seeing Mayza standing there. He frowned at seeing her tears, and then something clicked, and he pulled Mayza gently into the house without another word.

He closed the front door and led Mayza over to the couch. He pushed her down onto the cushions, turned the television off, and perched himself on the coffee table directly in front of her.

“Tell me who I need to kill, and if it’s Brian, then I’ll be sure to make it extra slow and torturous,” Jimmy said completely sincere and serious.

“I’m pregnant, Jimmy.”

“Eh, I should’ve seen that one coming. You and Brian can hardly keep your hands off of each other. Let me guess. Brian couldn’t handle it when you told him and kicked you out. But why are you dressed so damn fine then?”

“Today’s our one-year anniversary,” Mayza continued. “Brian took me out to a nice restaurant. We went for a walk on the beach...and he proposed. I told him I was pregnant, and he just stared at me before getting up and walking away without one word. I didn’t want to go home and your place was closest. I’m sorry if I’m being a burden.”

“Mayza, you’re 4’11” and, like, 80 pounds. You could never be a burden,” Jimmy answered. He frowned before continuing, “I’ll try to find something of Leana’s that might fit you. You are more than welcome to stay the night in the guest bedroom, and in the morning I’ll make sure to have a good, long talk with Brian that may or may not include a good beating.”

“You’re a saint, Jimmy,” Mayza said gratefully.

“Try convincing everyone else of that,” Jimmy muttered. “Now, come on, let’s get you some clothes to wear.”
