I Don't Even Know His Name...

Chapter 8: I Got Your Picture

The following days slid by at an incredibly slow pace, each time I would drive down to the hospital and spend the majority of the time in Alex’s dorm. The problem was most of the time he was so exhausted or completely drugged up on painkillers that he was asleep every time I was there. It didn’t matter it probably would be harder for me if he was awake.

The nurses told me that he was making progress he could remember his name, his birthday and more about his parents. Also that he was going to be discharged soon as he seemed to be well enough to go home. And the support from the fans was insane; today I was hoping that he would be awake so I could show him all the things they had sent him. Luckily by the time the door opened to Alex’s dorm for the first time he was sat up in his bed wide awake.

Thankfully his parents brought down some of his clothes so he wasn’t dressed in one of those creepy hospital gowns. Just a simple white v-neck and skinnies. But the light hit him in a way that rendered me speechless. But what struck me the most for the first time that signature smile of his had made its way onto his face as he beamed at me.

“Hey, Jack right?” his voice sounded just the way I remembered. Returning the smile I walked in settling my bag down and nodding.

“Yeah you remember my name?” Alex grinned looking over to his parents who sat by the window.

“I could remember you from the other day, and mum won’t stop talking about you” Mrs Gaskarth’s laugh rang through the dorm as a slight blush crept across my cheeks.

“Really? Actually I don’t want to know what you told him” quickly distracting myself my hand plunged into my bag pulling out various pieces of fan mail.

“Has she told you used to be in a band with me?” his head cocked to the side in that adorable fashion his father nodded in the background.

“Wasn’t it called All Time High’s or something?” I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Close enough, well basically we have quite a lot of fans and when they heard about the accident they sent some things for you.”

Those caramel eyes immediately lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.

“I h-have fans?” he stammered slightly.

Scooting up on his bed he reached out to the various cards and gifts that I scattered across the mattress. His finger tips slowly graced each piece of paper before his gaze shot up to meet mine.

“Is this all for me?” his voice quivered. With a small smile I nodded letting him read each one individually. Whilst he was in the midst of staring at various pictures of himself with fans a thought suddenly crossed my mind. Grabbing my bag once more and finding the camera that nestled at the bottom of it a sly smirk played on my lips. With a bright flash an image of a slightly teary eyed Alex surrounded in fan mail graced the screen. What made it even better was for the first time I witnessed that spark in his eyes again. Looking up he was slightly dazed from the intense flash.

“Sorry wanted a picture to show how thankful we are for peoples support and to show them that you’re doing well” I swear I saw him quickly wipe his eyes for stray tears.

“This is crazy” Alex breathed a small knock interrupting him. The familiar face of Lex’s nurse greeted us at the door.

“Welcome back Jack, what’s all this?” she questioned whilst she busied herself studying his charts.

“I got fan mail, it’s so awesome!” His parents obviously found his reaction hilarious and so did the nurse.

“That’s great! I have some good news for you all” immediately all the attention fixated on her with a sense of excitement.

“The doctors have decided that you have made enough progress to be discharged tomorrow” she announced everyone had a huge grin across their faces especially Alex.

“D-does that mean I can go home?” She walked over to him checking his temperature and writing various notes on a clipboard by his bed but nodded at the same time. Both of his parents got up from the other side and sat by the side of me.

“Actually that was something we wanted to talk to you about” my eyebrows furrowed together.

“What do you mean?” they shared a knowing look before turning back to us both.

“Well we thought if it was okay with you if Alex stays over your place for awhile, seeing as you two were so close I’m sure you will be able to help him remember much more than we will.” I think my mouth fell open slightly

“Are you serious?” They laughed.

“Of course, your parents said its fine and judging by Alex’s incessant questions about you I’m sure he would love to stay with you” He’s been asking about me? My heart skipped a little at the revelation turning to catch a glimpse of Alex. What made it even better was the soft shade of pink that crept across his cheekbones. Maybe I wasn’t the only one to feel something more between us after all.

“Sounds good to me” I couldn’t help but grin finally I wouldn’t have to sit back and just watch him looking so fragile and pained. He was getting stronger and he was slowly becoming the Alex that he forgot. Though I had to come up with a way of sneaking out of this place without being mobbed by paparazzi. It didn’t matter I had tonight to mull it over, all that mattered now was that he is coming home with me. And time couldn’t go by quick enough.
