Here Comes Your Man

Chapter 17

“So what’s Bud like?” Pyper asked with interest as they cruised down the highway.

She had long stopped bugging Shaun for hints about this mysterious package that they were going to pick up and decided to ask him about his work instead. There were so many different aspects of his life that sometimes she felt like she had barely skimmed the service. One thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to learn everything there was to know about this amazing man beside her.

“He’s a great guy,” Shaun said, looking into his side mirror as he switched lanes “a little rough around the edges but he’s legit, ya know? I’m not trying to sound cocky, but when you’re in the public eye like I am, so many people will just tell you what they think you want to hear whether it’s the truth or not but Bud’s not like that. He tells it how it is”

“I like people like that”

Shaun gave her a slow, genuine smile. “Me too”

They drove along the highway in a nice compatible silence for a view minutes before he pulled off on an exit that seemed to be made up of primarily residential areas.

Shaun drove up to a large ranch style house and pulled up to the back of it to what seemed like a dirt track of some sort.

They came to a stop but before Pyper even had a chance to ask Shaun where they were, he was jumping out of the car and took off running toward something in the distance that Pyper couldn’t quite make out.

“Um, okay…” She said to herself as she unbuckled her seatbelt and went to climb out of the car, curious as to what had made Shaun abandon her so abruptly.

She could see him in the distance, now standing with a man, and bending down to pick something up. As she got closer she couldn’t help but smile as she recognized the wriggling bundle in Shaun’s arms.

“Pyper, I’d like you to meet Rambo. Rambo, this is my lady-friend, Pyper.” Shaun set Rambo down on the ground and he quickly came over to investigate, wagging his stump of a tail enthusiastically as she squat down to pet him. She laughed as he started to lick her face.

"Rambo, man, stop mackin' on my lady" Shaun joked and picked him up, giving him a kiss on the head.

It was clear that both dog and master had missed each other equally and Pyper couldn't help but melt a little at the sight.
,
“I would also like to introduce you to someone else, though he’s not half as cute or good at first impressions as Rambo” Shaun continued before he got hit upside the head by said man.

“I’m Bud” The man cut Shaun off and stuck out his hand, which Pyper took, making sure to give it a hard squeeze. She had always been pretty good at reading people and she could tell that Bud wasn’t one to be won over by a few girly giggles. Which was probably best, honestly, because she wasn’t exactly one for girly giggles herself.

“Pyper. Nice to meet you” She smiled “I like your bikes”

She nodded over to a big warehouse looking building where three dirt-bikes were standing, just asking to be ridden.

“Thanks, you ride?” Bud was scoping her out, seeing if she was merely making conversation or if she could back up her compliment.

Pyper glanced back over at the bikes casually, trying to appear cool and collected even though she wasn’t feeling particularly either of those things. She knew Bud cared about Shaun like a son and just wanted to protect him from girls who might not have his best interests in mind. Pyper wanted to prove that she wasn’t one.

“Yeah, back in Hawaii. I’m no pro or anything but I’m not a complete novice either” She said, the twinkle in her eye revealing more than she was verbally.

“I didn’t know that” Shaun chimed in, re-joining the conversation. A conversation that he wasn’t aware was mostly taking place between Bud & Pyper silently.

They both ignored him as they continued.

“Would you care to take a few turns on the track?” Bud asked.

“Sure”

And they both turned and headed towards the garage, leaving Shaun a little bewildered as he brought up the rear.

When they were all suited up and ready to go, Shaun turned to Pyper.

“Now I know that girl’s can be a little intimidated by the jumps but…” Shaun started but before he knew what was happening, Pyper was on the bike and kick starting the engine. She stuck her middle finger up to him in a choice gesture and sprayed him with a shower of dirt as she made a quick turn, while impressively staying on the bike, and sped off down the track.
Bud let out a hardy laugh as he came over and slapped Shaun on the back.

“Oh yeah, she’s a keeper.”

Wow, SO sorry for the wait and the shortness! Life has been pretty hectic but I'm really trying to commit and aim to finish this story by August! I know where I'm going with it but it's the actual writing part that always gets me, ya know? :p Anyways, thanks for sticking around and reading, you guys are the best! As always, comments are loved & appreciated.

P.S. - How do you guys feel about the new Mibba? It's strange and I can honestly say I am NOT a fan of the girl at the top of the page. (Seriously, who writes like that? No one. That position gets uncomfortable in like 45 seconds) But aside from that, I don't really mind it. I think the people who left the day it came out jumped the gun a little bit. Oh well...
