Heart in the Sky
A Race
May raced ahead, looking back to see if Snow was getting closer, she bounded full speed down the sidewalk, feeling the wind in her face and breathing in the fresh air, "You can't catch me!" She teased Snow, leaping over a large root in her path.
“Oh yes I can!” Snow yelled, leaping the same root.
“Your gonna lose, I’m gonna win,” May sung.
“Guess again May!”
A man stepped in May’s path, she was heading full speed toward him, he threw his hands in the air to protect himself from the sprinting girl, and dropped his basket. May circled around him, he cried out in despair, looking at the scattered fruit.
“Sorry Mr. Henry!” May cried behind her, hardly noticing the damage she’d done. Mr. Henry smiled, and moved to pick up his fruit. Snow bounded past him, in hot pursuit of May.
May’s long, bleach blond, braid whipped behind her, and her royal blue battle dress blew in the breeze. One of the buttons came undone on her tan button up boots, and became considerably looser. May stumbled along, until she was forced to stop and fix it. Snow whizzed by her. May cursed, and hurried after Snow, hoping she had not lost too much time.
Soon Snow came into view, and May, finding a sudden burst of energy, lunged forward, pulling Snow back and propelling herself forward. Snow regained her balance, and started running again, “That’s cheating May!” She hollered.
May looked back and laughed, “No one ever said that I couldn’t do that!” her legs pumped wildly.
Snow was invigorated by anger, and she was advancing on May, “If you say everything’s fair!” She cried, flinging one of her weapons she had created over the summer, a small package, that opened up and became a net. The net dropped on May, and she struggled to get free while Snow tore past her. May finally pulled out her dagger and sliced the net, jumping up and nearly landing flat on her face, she untangled her foot and resumed her chase.
May’s mind raced, what could she do to catch up to Snow, she thought of all the weapons Snow had, the dumb nets she had created, the sword she kept strapped to her back, and all the other gadgets that she kept on her. May looked at her tiny dagger, it was the only weapon she had. She promised herself she would come up with a good weapon that no one had thought of before, but she did not have much time for thinking of that, and soon began scanning the streets to see if there was anything she could use to stop Snow. She spotted Ms. Rose up ahead, sweeping the leaves off her porch. May jumped onto the porch and snatched the broom.
“Can I borrow this Ms. Rose?” May did not wait for a response, “Thanks!” She charged as hard as she could until she got Snow in her sight, then she flung the broom through the air, hitting Snow square in the back with the end of it. Snow stumbled and fell.
“Ouch!” She cried, standing up and rubbing her back before taking off after May again.
May smiled to herself as she ran, enjoying the sense of victory she had gotten from passing her sister once again. Then all of a sudden she saw Snow above, racing her from the tree tops, leaping from limb to limb, “Sorry sis! But your gonna lose!” She bounded away.
May felt a wave of envy flood through her, if not for her trainer she would be able to run in the tree tops too. She felt the blood rushing to her head, anger rising within. In a single rash decision, May scrambled up the nearest tree and started bounding from limb to limb at a furious pace.
Snow looked back, May was rushing towards her, in one tremendous leap, May launched herself over Snow. She soared, and for a second she felt as if she were going to fly, but gravity was a cruel thing, and May landed with a thump on a tree branch at least four trees away. She teetered there, gasping for air. She could see the school, it was right there in front of her, all the kids were walking inside and heading to their rooms. Snow cried out in alarm, and reached May just as her feet slipped from under her.
Snow pulled her little sister by one year up and dropped to the ground, “What were you thinking?” She scolded, her grip tight on May’s arm.
May stayed silent, her heart was beating furiously, her head pounded, her glory was stolen from her. She thought of what she had looked like soaring top speed over those limbs, and then that wondrous leap. She wished she could have seen herself, until she landed. May winced, she must have looked like a complete fool, and wiped her eyes on her arm, trying to hold back the embarrassed tears.
Snow was shaking, livid with anger, and pulled May the rest of the way to school, a group of boys had seen the action, and they laughed at May. She hid her face, feeling ashamed that she had tried to do something she had never done before. She clenched her fists, as she walked past the boys she spit at their feet.
Snow saw it, “May!” She reprimanded, then swung her head towards the giggling boys, “you better shut your pie-holes or I’ll shut em’ for ya!” She growled.
Before the boys could respond Snow and May were out of sight.
Once they were inside the building May could no longer take the embarrassment, “Let go of me Snow!” She howled, ripping from Snow’s grasp, “Your not my mother! Your only a year older then me!” May raced away from Snow, slowing once she had reached the hall that lead to her classroom. She just knew they had heard of what she had done, and she dragged her feet, hoping to delay the inevitable.
