Once More an Ending

Sleep

After a while of driving, I couldn’t even look out the bus doors windows. There was just complete chaos. Cars were broken and turned over. Blood and pieces of people were scattered everywhere. Stores were broken into, bloody, and some were even on fire. Zombies littered the streets. Feeding off of helpless people. I couldn’t hear their screams, but I could still see the terror on their faces. It was etched into my mind.

My stomach sank and tears started to fill my eyes, as I latched onto the still sobbing Axl a little tighter. I couldn’t help but think about the boys back at the Motley house. I tried to stay positive, but I couldn’t help but think that they were all dead. My best friends in the whole world were probably gone, and I was stuck here with these random strangers.

By the time the bus slowly came to a stop, Axl and I had long since stopped crying, we were still holding onto each other though. I didn’t mind too much, it reminded me of Tommy and his amazing hugs. Izzy was sitting on the floor next to the Slash –who had remained pretty calm through the whole thing. And Duff was sitting in the front passengers seat.

“Can’t you get any closer?” Duff asked uneasily as he looked around.

“Do you see any way for me to get closer?” Slash snapped, “please tell me if you do, cause I am not looking forward to running past them.” he pointed at the small hoard of zombies that we’d caught the attention of.

Axl had an unreadable look on his face, as he let his arms fall to his sides. I was about to ask if he was okay when he opened the bus door and dashed out of the bus. Slash flew out of the bus after him, calling his name as he ran. Duff, Izzy, and I just watched in complete horror. All of us too scared to move.

“They’re almost there,” Duff said looking down at Izzy and I, “lets go.”

I latched myself to Izzy this time as we started to run after Slash and Axl. Things seemed to be going well… until Axl fell. There was the unmistakable sound of a bone breaking and flesh being torn, along with a low moan.

Slash began franticly yelling to watch out for zombies on the ground, as well as screaming curses, as he tried to help Axl. Axl was just screaming in agony. I felt like I was going to be sick.

“You two get inside,” Duff ordered, “I’ll help them.”

Izzy just nodded in response before hoisting me over his shoulder, “you’re too slow!”

I tightly closed my eyes and started to prey. I’d never really believed in any of that sort of thing, but now seemed like the time to start believing in something. The next thing I knew I was being dropped on the floor. My eyes snapped open to look around. We’d made it into the store.

“Do you think there are any of them in here already?” I asked shakily, as I got up and dusted myself off.

Izzy gave me a look that said he hadn’t thought of that, “We should wait here for them before we start looking around… strength in numbers?”

I silently nodded as I attached myself to him once again. I closed my eyes and continued to prey, as he watched his friends. I didn’t know how he could watch what was happening. It made me sick just thinking about it. I felt him start to slightly shake as his arms snaked their way around me. I assumed he was crying. I couldn’t blame him.

It felt like hours passed before the door quickly opened and slammed shut. Izzy let go of me as Duff yelled at us to push the large fruit display thing in front of the doors. We managed to do it somewhat quickly. I wasn’t really sure how much help I was, but I tried my best to push it.

Duff grabbed my hand and pulled me along behind him, Izzy was right behind us. I hadn’t really noticed when Duff first came into the store, but he was covered in blood. It was starting to clot in his messy blonde hair. His clothes were ripped; his shirt was shredded to the point that I wasn’t quite sure how it was still on him. He had large bite marks on his arms, and scratches all over him.

“Do you think I’m gonna get rabies or something?” he asked as he opened the door to the staff room.

I just stared at him, as Izzy walked into the room, “are you serious? You’re worried about rabies?”

He looked a little bashful, and shrugged his broad shoulders. I shook my head and walked into the room. I started to look for a first aid kit so I could clean Duff up. Duff sat down in a chair with his head in his hands. Izzy was sitting in the back corner of the room, silently crying. It was taking everything I had to not join Izzy. I was trying to focus on the task at hand. And that was making sure Duff didn’t die of some sort of disease… who knew what he could catch from one of those hobo zombies.

I finally found the first aid kit after a few minutes of searching. I it was in the little bathroom; which should have been the first place I looked. I took a chair and sat in front of Duff. I opened the bottle of peroxide that I also found in the bathroom.

“This may sting a little,” I said softly before pouring some on the worst bite on his arm. It instantly started to fill with white bubbles, meaning the peroxide was cleaning the bacteria out.

Duff hissed in pain, “Fuck, Fuck, Fuck! ‘It may sting a bit’,” he mocked through clenched teeth, “I fucking feel like I’m gonna throw up.”

I rolled my eyes as I very gently wiped it off and poured a little more on the wound, “suck it up, hon. Just wait till we get to the rubbing alcohol… and the rest of your injuries.”

He closed his eyes, pain clearly written all over his face. He didn’t make any more fuss about it though. He kept virtually quiet through the rest of me cleaning him up. After a while he opened his eyes again and watched Izzy, who was still in the corner, now huddled up in a ball. Duff let a few tears fall before hastily wiping them away and glaring at his lap.

“Duff… it’s okay to cry,” I said softly as I finished stitching up the bite on his arm.

He looked up at me. Sorrow, pain, and anger were all mixed in his gorgeous blue eyes, “it’s my fault Axl and Slash aren’t here too… I got s-scared… and-an-and I-I… I r-ran,” he started to choke on his sobs.

I pulled him into a tight hug, and rubbed soothing circles on his back. Letting him cry on my shoulder, “it’s not your fault Duff.”

“I ran away,” he choked out angrily, “it’s all my fault.”

I let Duff continue to cry as I tried my best to sooth him. Tears were starting to prick at my eyes. I was trying to be strong for the both of them, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep it up very long.

Once Duff got his crying a little bit under control, he got up and went over to Izzy. They started to quietly talk in the corner. At the moment I felt very alone. I had no one here with me. Izzy and Duff had each other. For all I knew all my friends were dead, or undead, how ever you want to look at it. I took a deep breath to stop myself from breaking down right then and there. I went over to the little radio on the shitty folding card table the employees used. There was nothing but static on ever station. I quickly gave up and turned the stupid thing off.

I got up and walked over to the boys. Duff was curled up in a ball, seemingly sleeping. He was drenched in sweat and looked to be in a lot of pain. Izzy just sat and watched me come over and sit by him. We didn’t say anything. There wasn’t anything to say, really. I rested my head against his shoulder and completely broke down.

I felt so alone and helpless. Everyone I cared about was probably dead or dieing, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was stuck here in a little room with two perfect strangers.

Izzy wrapped me up in a hug and pulled me closer to him, as I continued to silently sob. He gently started to rock us from side to side, careful not to bother Duff. It wasn’t long until my eyelids began to get heavy. I was completely wiped. All the crying, running, and panicking had really taken a toll on me. Soon I was completely lulled to sleep.
