Hey Romeo, Don't You Think You're Just a Tad Overrated?
Sophomore Fangirls
Phillips Hall, Auditorium
"Where have you been? I thought you'd be here already!" Alyssa exclaimed, waving her sandwich around. "I'm starving!"
I grinned at her. "You're always starving," I chided. "I have to tell you something," I muttered, pulling Alyssa to the corner of the auditorium to eat our lunch, so the sophomores couldn't eavesdrop.
"Max asked you to get back together with him?" Alyssa whispered when I finished. "Why did you say no? This is Max Austerlitz you're talking about! He's cute, popular, and smart!"
"Everyone here is smart," I commented dryly, taking another bite of my sandwich.
"That's not the point," Alyssa smacked my knee.
I shrugged. "I just…I dunno. I don't really like him in that way."
"He's not the one?" Alyssa emphasized.
I shrugged again. "I dunno."
Alyssa sighed. "Well, it's not like you're going to the Winter Formal anyway."
I glared at her. "Thanks, Pig, " I shot at her.
"Shut up! You promised you'd never call me that again!" Alyssa smacked me again, laughing.
"Hey guys!" Megan suddenly called to us. "Are you ready us mount the arch?" she asked.
I wrapped up the last remains of my sandwich and threw it in the trash. "Sure, we're coming," I said.
"Alright, this has to go over the DJ stand…watch out, it's heavy…" Megan instructed as four sophomores, Alyssa, and me lifted the huge, decorated arch. "Set it down…good. Move it a bit over to the right…"
"Ugh, I got the stupid glitter all over my shirt," I mumbled, brushing at my blouse. I vaguely heard the auditorium doors open and close shut again.
"Oh my gosh, it's Cam Gallagher!" I suddenly heard a sophomore girl whisper excitedly.
"Megan! It's Cam Gallagher! Oh my gosh, he's totally going to ask you to the dance!"
"He's coming over here!"
I glanced up. It was indeed Cam Gallagher, walking our way. However, he didn't look like he was remotely anywhere near asking someone to the dance. In fact, he looked like he was going to kill someone. And he was staring at… I looked at Megan. She was blushing and adjusting her shirt (cough, cough, her boobs), but she was standing at least ten feet away from me. Oh gods. Why was Cam staring at me like he wanted to punch me in the face?
"Where is that packet you were supposed to hand to Mr. Harbing yesterday?" he stopped right in front of me, glaring at me.
All the sophomores suddenly started whispering to each other, and for some reason, I saw Megan glaring at me from the corner of my eye. "Uh…what packet?" I asked, shrinking away. Alyssa, who was hiding behind the huge arch, looked positively frightened.
He crossed his arms. "Geez, could you be any stupider?" Cam rolled his eyes impatiently. "The math team packet! You were supposed to hand it in yesterday! Everyone else did, and you're the only one left! We have a meet on Thursday!"
"I thought that was due tomorrow!" I said, finally remembering. I was pretty sure I had finished it today during breakfast…
"I said Monday."
"You never said anything!" I retorted. "You just shoved it in my face when I walked past you!"
"If you don't hand it in now, I'm giving you detention."
I threw my hands up in the air in defeat. "Fine! Fine, I'll give it to you!" I muttered angrily, stalking over to my bag and rifling through my folder to find the math packet. "Here," I thrust the papers in his hands a minute later.
He scowled, flipping through the pages to make sure I had done everything. "Numbers five, seven, twelve, twenty-four, twenty-five, and half of the back page are wrong, but whatever," he muttered, turning away.
I seethed, clenching my fists. "Well, sorry I'm not some sort of super-human calculator!" I muttered under my breath, walking back to where Alyssa was adjusting the lopsided snowflakes on the arch.
"Hi, Cam," I heard Megan say in a breathy voice.
Alyssa and I looked up to see the sophomore girl finally find the nerve and intercepted Cam.
"Um…hi Megan," Cam started uncertainly.
Holy crap, he remembered her. Well, he probably would remember someone who he's swapped spit with…and it's kinda hard to forget boobs the size of basketballs…
Megan nodded excitedly, tugging at her shirt. "So…are you going to the Winter Formal this year?" she asked, looking up at him through her long lashes.
Cam blinked. "Yeah, I'm gonna be there."
"Are you taking anyone?" Megan asked suggestively.
Behind me, Alyssa mimed gagging.
Please say no to her, please say no to her, please say no to her, what the hell am I thinking anyway?!
"Uh…actually, I don't think so…" Cam mumbled.
"Really? You should totally take someone as a date," Megan smiled up at him. "Don't all prefects have to get a date?"
Geez. That girl was basically stripping in front of him!
"No," Cam said. "Um, I'll see you at the dance, Megan," he muttered, sidestepping her and exiting the auditorium.
All the sophomore girls burst into excited giggles.
"Oh my gosh, he is sooooo going to ask you to the dance! He was just embarrassed! Megan, you're so lucky! You were so cool! He's so hot!" everyone was squealing.
"Um, guys, is the arch okay here?" Alyssa finally spoke up loudly, waving to get the girls' attention.
"Yeah, it's fine," Megan called. She suddenly narrowed my eyes at me. "Hey, Aurelie…do you know Cam?"
I blinked. No freaking duh I knew Cam. He just basically barged in here and bit my head off. "Yes…" I said slowly.
"Oh. Are you guys…you know…friends? Close friends?" Megan pressed.
From the way he nearly slaughtered me earlier? No. From when he crawled through my bedroom window to comfort me? Maybe. "Do you think we're friends?" I answered sardonically.
"He doesn't like you," Megan finally concluded, satisfaction lacing her voice.
She seemed happy to find out that I wasn't going to be a potential threat to her and her wonderful Mr. Prefect. Other than the fact, you know, he came in here to see me in the first place. Hah! Even though he was about to kill me…but still.
"Come on, let's hang up the rest of the snowflakes," Megan called.
"Jealous, much?" Alyssa whispered to me, nodding in Megan's direction as we picked up two heavy boxes filled with silver snowflakes.
"Oh please. Megan knows that I'm not going to be a harm," I scoffed.
"Really now?" Alyssa cocked an eyebrow.
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah. Now let's hang up these stupid snowflakes and get outta here."
"Where have you been? I thought you'd be here already!" Alyssa exclaimed, waving her sandwich around. "I'm starving!"
